I can answer any questions you might have.
I really want to be a pilot. I know, I know, everyone in the air force wants to be a pilot. But I have the sort of hardheaded determination that I will do my best to be one.
I really want to fly A10's, and I know that you have to be at the top of Flight School to get first dibs. I am also really good with aircraft and learning the mechanics and such- DCS A10C is my favorite game of all time, thanks to the fidelity.
My only problem is that I have horrid vision. 20/80. I know you can get Lasik, but will they look at that? I wanted to do ROTC, but I think you have to be a certain age before you can get Lasik. However, since I plan to do ROTC I am afraid they might record my poor vision since I will be 18 at that time.
Would they update it when I graduated college and went into Flight School? Or would I be unable to ever fly for the AF?
You're on the right path. Talk to a recruiter, that's the best thing to do. I think they'll take you if you get Lasik. Also, if you go to college I'm 99% sure they'll record it as you try to get your commission.
Also, although playing the DCS is a good practice thing.. I wouldn't keep it too close to your skill set. I've played it, and I'm qualified to work on A-10s.. real life is not a video game but I suppose it can help knowing where switches and such are. But you being a pilot is so far down the road you're gonna probably dump it anyways. Especially since you'll learn on (I think) a T-38 first at Sheppard AFB.
If you keep on this path and get the lasik you should be just fine for being a pilot. Talk to a recruiter to make sure. I can try to talk to some F-15E pilots and see what they know about LASIK but I'm changing shifts and might not be around them as much.

Somehow I doubt you'll manage to get an april ship date at this stage unless you get real lucky. I got mine on January 6th for a ship date on April 24th

What's your MOS? Does the military give any fucks about your education? By that I mean will my A+ certification etc mean shit to them when it comes to getting the spot I want?

Be wary of crazy 60MPH wind then crazy drought then crazy tornadoes. OK has fucked up weather. Oh, and of course insane ice storms. If you like extremes you'll be happy.

Thanks for the help, if you could talk to the pilots I would really appreciate it. I am going to try for Air Force Academy, not sure if I'll get in but trying doesn't hurt. My grandfather said(ex-pilot and Colonel) said if I wanted to be a pilot I should look at academy. He passed away last year so I can't go to him for advice anymore :( .
As far as the game goes- Believe, I know real life is not a video game. I don't use it as a definitive training system, but more as a way to experience what the aircraft is like. Admittedly, I would be happy to fly just about anything in the Air Force. If I didn't get A10's, my second choice would be C17's. I am sure I could find something I enjoy, and IMO getting paid to fly planes is a good deal.
hey guys
would it work if i did the dep bullshit and went to basic between my junior and senior year of HS for army reserves or whatever then transferred to active duty?
cus i want a head start w/ bullshit but i want to be active duty if i take this approach

No, you must have a high school diploma to join the military (GEDs work too but the acceptance rate is low). The reason why this wouldn't work is because you'd be active duty for at least 6 months so you'd be missing school

Academy is your best bet. I hear it can be a shitty time, but regardless I'd do it anyways. And by shitty I mean college with military rules so take that as you want. It is the best choice per word of pilots. Also, since it is a bit more strict, you already have a better success rate. In college you can dick off and do what you want.. forget your goal. With the Academy, you're already stuck! At least that's how I see it. Just keep focused on your goal and PM me if you have any questions I might be able to answer.
Oh, and another route would be go enlisted, get your degree, and then get your commission.. however that's a very tough route but completely possible.
Yeah, you do have military rules. However, you do get to do some really cool things- glider team included. Also, I am not the huge party or social person. I'm not antisocial per se, but I don't leap at chances be around people. So the college experience is not going to be a huge loss for me.
Thanks for the help!

what no
you do basic between junior and senior then you go back and finish hs then go to MOS school
i wanna know if i could transfer over to active duty because the thing i just described is for army reserves

Can't speak for Army reserves, but the general rule of thumb when joining active duty military is to have at least HS diploma or GED...
Wait, you can do reserves while in high school? I've never heard of that...

If you want to be active duty military don't join the reserves just wait to finish high school and enlist. There's no guarantee you'll be able to go AD when you join the reserves since its a different component. You'd be under the army reserves not the AD army.
So, I was just thinking.
If I am to join military, what are the ways for a man to become a marksman? Or something along the lines. Just that sniping is my passion and I fell in love with sniper rifles after trying them out in the shooting range.

Im also curious about this, who decides if you get an M4, M249, M240b or a Marksman rifle?

In the infantry its determined by MOS, though in the corps just because your MOS says machine gunner or mortarmen doesn't mean that's what you'll be doing 100% of the time. Hell even I as an aircrewmen can be pulled to serve as a .50 cal gunner or rifleman. As for designated marksmen you need to be at least a corporal and score expert on the rifle range. They send you to the first part of the scout sniper course that deals only with the marksmanship. Keep in mind this is only the marines, Army does shit way different.
If you want to be a sniper either start becoming a super moto PT god or start dreaming about something else. In the corps they pull most snipers out of the force recon community, which in itself is beyond anything you've ever done, who are then sent to an amazingly grueling 13 week course. It's not uncommon for less than 50% of the class to graduate, and keep in mind these guys are usually force recon.

Not to be a dick, but rifle range=/=sniper material. You do a lot more than shoot with a rifle.
Being a sniper must be shitty, at least in the Marines. You go through boot camp, then through BRC (presumably) and then Force Recon. You go through training that gets shittier and shittier until you reach the epitome of feeling like total shit :v:

Standard US army combative roles right now are flying out the door, as I was informed by people I processed with and recruiters. So your vision better be 20/20 or 20/10 by the time you get medically checked out, otherwise you can kiss your MOS as an infantryman goodbye. (I don't believe Army pays for LASIK/PRK)
I tried to get into infantry/armored myself with 20/40 vision and they basically told me to fuck off, and then I got slammed with a logistics job but considering I signed up with a GED that's actually generous.
You'll have better luck with the marines, honestly. Not alot of people these days have the balls to go after the marines, so I imagine most of the jobs are more open in the Corps than over in the Army. You just need to have the mentality to be able suck it up when people get in your face and scream about how they didn't know they stacked piles of shit as high as you.

Even with corrected vision (I wear glasses to see things at distance) you won't be able to get into infantry?

I find that a hard pill to swallow. I have seen plenty of infantrymen with glasses. Hell, when I went through basic, one of my Drill Sergeants wore glasses, and he was in the 25th ID.
My friend's doing his conscription right now (I'll be doing mine next year most likely)

Drill sergeants have years in and enlisted pre 2012, I'm also thinking circa 2012 they really started to push the standards a little higher now that they're downsizing. They really said they couldn't squeeze me into to 96b or whatever the inf MOS is because of my vision.
I'm going to get lasik in the coming months before/after AIT maybe, so I can go to jump school for airborne. Not because it's required, I'd just like to see the ground before I splat on it.

Are people with flat feet allowed in the military?
yes
Are people with flat feet allowed in the military?
Generally yes, depending on the severity. You can go and get free custom insoles that are worth $500 a pair once you're in.
