That's true, but ROTC cadets are also considered officer candidates by the Air Force, and it is the most accessible route to becoming an officer. After your first two years, you officially join the Air Force as an E1-E5 and are considered to be serving without pay until you get your commission as an 0-1. By any chance are you thinking about JROTC? Because that is completely different.
So how does ROTC work, is it like a part-time thing you can attend whilst doing college or high school, or is it a full-time thing as part of the air force after you join?
The way i'm thinking of moving to the US just involves shacking up with family members over there for a short while whilst i enlist, so unless I'm given accommodation and stuff whilst in ROTC, it means i'll have to stay for an awful long time before actually enlisting.
I keep reading that the Security Forces for the Air Force is bad. What's so bad about it?
theres a saying
"if it wasn't for security forces, the airforce wouldn't even need security forces"

I can answer this, if Triggerhappy doesn't mind. I'm an AFROTC cadet myself.
ROTC is an officer commissioning program that is offered alongside normal academic classes in college. Usually, you have to be a full-time student at a host college or cross-town college (a college near a host institution) to enroll. You can't be an Air Force officer without at least a bachelor degree. The AFROTC program is a way of earning your commission and your degree at same time.
JROTC is the High School equivalent, and is not an officer commissioning program. But spending enough years in JROTC will give you a higher enlisted rank if you enlist after high school.
I keep reading that the Security Forces for the Air Force is bad. What's so bad about it?
It is bad because it is full of all the people who thought that it would be cool, but isn't. I have seen countless people think like this: "Well, I don't want to deploy like the Army does, but I want to do something that maybe vaguely possibly will allow me to do something cool, so security forces it is!" Then they find out it isn't as cool as they think, and thus the badness ensues.
If you fail out of college but not because you were a party animal idiot, can you still get into the marines?
If you fail out of college but not because you were a party animal idiot, can you still get into the marines?
Yes, as long as you have an acceptable ASVAB score and pass all the physicals and whatnot, as well as not having a criminal record.
I misspoke. If you don't want to do FMF its possible not to, but if you do terrible in school/suck then you have less options for orders. There are a lot of FMF orders now, so you have to excel to get your pick of a larger selection of orders. I personally want to go FMF it's a good career choice nowadays anyways.
I want to go FMF at one point in my career. Either that or SWO.

That section about sucking sounds dead on with what I went through as an Infantryman at Fort Campbell. Yeah it's rewarding later...but it sure sucks ass and makes you hate life while you're dealing with the bullshit.
Yeah I know what its like to lug around a 20+ pound beast for a few hours... My dad bought a savage .308 off some guy and this thing weighed about 26 pounds, 20 without the lead in the back of the stock. He forgot to grab my rifle from his dad's house so I lugged around a 26 pound sniper rifle for 4 hours...
I'd be fine with lugging around a big ass gun since I'm a pretty hefty guy but hopefully I won't be infantry anyway. My only problem with being the automatic rifleman is that it makes me a bigger target in a firefight... I mean if you keep your damned head down and pray that they don't have artillery then one would be fine.

Okay I'm a bit confused, if I wanted to be a mechanic on ground vehicles like humvees or AAV's what MOS would that be? And has anyone ever had an Armorer job before? And if so is it a decent job or does it suck keeping track of every single weapon.
Lol..where did your dad find a 26 pound hunting rifle. That's just 1.6 pounds under the weight of an M-240B.

It wasn't a "Hunting Rifle" It was a savage 10FP http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Savage_10FP That one weighs 11.50 pounds but the one my dad has has some big, heavy ass sniper stock on it and a giant muzzlebreak on the front. And I was wrong, its 16 pounds without the lead in the stock and 26 pounds with it in.

That is absolutely needlessly heavy.

How hard is the ASVAB?

Yeah but he got it for $200 and its a nice accurate rifle, but yeah the extra 10 pounds was uneccesary, my dad didn't know it could be taken out until after the trip...

If you breathe, you can pass it. Basic algebra, reading comprehension, mechanical, auto, electrical,, stuff like that. Basic, simple stuff.

16 pounds is still godawful though. That weighs more than an M249. I am sure more weight reduction can be made to that poor rifle.

Its basically one of those "Ultimate omg hackz0rs 1337" sniper rifles. The scope on the damn thing is massive too, I think the zoom goes up to x20 and its got this long ass shroud to keep the sun out. Also I just weighed it again, its 24 pounds with the weighs and 14 without it. I could've sworn it was 16 pounds unleaded, eitherway it's a heavy motherfucker that isn't made to miss and is complete overkill.
Knowing that the Marines assigns your MOS, is it still possible to find a way to become a military Journalist?
Why? I would think there would less opportunities to gain medical experience with the marine side of the coin.
You look better for boards , you can get a warfare device which gives you points on promotion exams, you become more deployable since you can go places with the Marines. You're right though, you do less medical stuff when you actually are with the Marinea. But just because you're FMF doesn't mean you will always be with Marinea, you can still work in a Hospital .
yeah choose it as your mos

yes
give me links to documentation, slave
nah but is it an online test or do i actually have to leave my man fortress to take it?
So if I get my Eagle Scout and go into the Marines what rank will I actually come out as after bootcamp?
You'll actually get PFC (e-2). You could have college degree and all you'd get is E-2 in the Marines, that's as high as they'll let you go into boot. I got PFC for my Eagle Scout, got me PFC pay instead of private first 3 months pay (which is a $500 a month difference) and was able to get E-3 sooner than the privates because of that.
Jesus fucking christ.
Doctors are fucking retarded, at MEPS.
Only thing I had on my medical record was a mole removal from when I was wee little. The mole turned out to be not cancerous, and this was specified on the sheets. No problems. Everything was hunky-dory with it.
BUT BECAUSE IT WAS AN INCOMPLETE EXCISION I NEED TO GET MORE PAPERWORK (IF IT EXISTS) AND HAND THAT IN TO THIS DOCTOR.
god fucking damn
On the bright side, I did p. good on my ASVABs.
Yeah, meps can be pretty obnoxious. My experience went fine, but ive heard plenty of horror stories.
I keep reading that the Security Forces for the Air Force is bad. What's so bad about it?
The general idea is that they're the ones smart enough to get in the air force but too dumb for anything else. Or were indecisive and went open general.
They get deployed a ton, and when they arent they're checking IDs at the gate in some god awful place like minot. Or god forbid, lackland.

You can get your recruiter to give you a practice ASVAB that doesn't count, but tells you roughly how you will do on the actual thing over at the local MEPS station.

7th grade math and reading.
Some mechanical stuff.
My favorite question:
A keyboard is what type of device:
a. Input
b. Output
c. Processing
d. Syndication
So uhm, I'm taking the ASVAB for some Army recruiter next Saturday (cause local Air Force recruiter is away) and I've been wondering,
lately people have been saying it's more difficult to get into the Air Force, me, wondering if it's true and would like to also ask if it would be difficult to sign up/switch into the Air Force after being in the Army?
(Sorry for any foolish questions.)

D, right?
So what are the steps to get into the Air Force? I know it's meeting the requirements and passing the ASVAB, but what else? What type of jobs do they have? What's a good MOS or AFS, if it's called that? What are the advantaged and disadvantages of the Air Force compared to other branches of the military. I basically want to start readying myself.
