Man you guys sure get riled up. I've actually talked to him about the military in the past (reserves, mind you). He almost joined up, but told me that after thinking about what goes on out there he got scared off of it, which I totally get. I wouldn't join, simply because of what war itself is. War. Bloodshed. Nobody needs to die. If everybody in the world just chilled the fuck out there wouldn't be war over land and oil and religion and political quarrels, and there surely wouldn't be anybody ripping on somebody who's anti-war. Apparently you're alright with going to war and can't stand somebody who thinks war is stupid?

BUT THE ENTIRE MILITARY ISN'T ABOUT WAR
Isn't it fair to say that a lot of you want to do the war-thing? Not necessarily shooting 'towelheads', but the valor, the guns, the jeeps, the training in general, you know.. War-thing?
I mean there are student loans if you want your school paid for. Thus you can pay them off when you've got your degree and a job. No need to put your life at risk
I'm going into the Marines so I can have a lifestyle and a guaranteed job and possibly a college degree, The military is great when you're single and better down the road if you make it into a career, there is just so many choices and things one can do. You can travel too, Yeah you're trained to be ready for a war situation but its not all about war and not all of us want to see combat. I want to be an infantryman and try to get into delta one day so yes I kinda do want a combat role but that might change in a few years.

Loans, interests, starting income, general expenses how does it work?
It takes years to pay off those loans. Dependent on your degree.
Fair enough points. It just seems strange to me, idunno, I've never seen the appeal in joining up. If I get sent overseas, I'm at the mercy of the desert and it's inhabitants, both of which want me dead. I myself considered joining up (Canadian) and becoming a sharpshooter, mainly because I'm a damn good shot #boast, but also because I'm not in the front lines. I'm not the guy kicking in a door or walking around a field at night. I'd feel cozy up in my sniper's roost. Yet again, what stopped me was the actual war itself. I'd join the military if it were homeland-defense, because frankly nobody gets to fuck with Canada if I can help it. Alas, it's not, and I'd probably be shipped overseas.

Better than running the risk of being killed/severely wounded imho D:

Hell, even being a sharpshooter runs its risks. Your little nest could get pinned down and you'd be trapped.
This is true. Still, war.. heebyjeebies overload
That's why I'm keeping my ass in Canada and trying to get my band to go big (fancy that, Paul McCartney is a musickid). I'll have all the money I'll need, no jumpingjacks required
Hell, 40,000 people die a year from car crashes. Its almost safer in the military.

I've always wanted to fly for a living. Sure, I could build hours for that easy airline job by doing the standard freight, air taxi, and flight instructor gigs. However, I'd also go in MASSIVE debt; we're talking 60k-150k+ range. On the other hand, getting a flight spot with any of the branches is almost as safe of a route, minus the crazy debt... Sorry, I'll take my chances getting shot off of a boat rather than teaching jimmy how to fly.
TL;DR: Somethings are worth the risk.
I recommend getting stationed in mainland. With that being said Okinawa is pretty fun, also considering you're in the Navy and an Officer you'll have a good time. You're afforded much more privileges than marines stationed here, so don't let naysayers convince you about Okinawa sucking. Also, I'd like to COT to Italy or Spain lol, crossing my fingers at my PRD.
Well right now my wife (Navy nurse) was recommended by her specialty leader to go overseas at her next command. I don't mind going as long as we're together.
Looks like I'm working security for the Gamecocks/Razorback game today. What an awesome way to get community service!
Well I just graduated from MCRD Parris Island yesterday and am finaly home now so whats up facepunch? And Happy Birthday Marines.
Congratulations Marine. Nothing much is happening right now at the moment.

Im curious, did you guys hear about the presidential election results at parris island? I hear it can kinda be locked down from the outside there.

I would imagine they would allow them to vote via absentee ballots.
If not, that's a little fucked up.
So does everyone who is infantry carry a sidearm and is it always the M9 or do you have a small choice of what you can carry?
I have a M9 issued to me, only way I got it was becoming the gunner on the 81mm mortar. Most of the time us infantry just get the M4 though.

Wow, I miss "bad reading". Who in this thread said he can't stand people to think war is stupid? Everybody knows that war is stupid. But this thread is about "joining the military", so there's no need to post stupid anti-military or pacifistic stuff in here...
It's for people who want to know what they have to count with if they join the armed forces.

The military offers you many chances you won't get in a civil job. It doesn't have anything to do with the "war-thing".
For example, you join the military to become a pilot. They will pay the training for you, where on the other side you would have to pay several tens of thousand dollars to do it in civil. Is that stupid? You don't even need to serve at the very frontline in order to be a soldier. Inform yourself before you rant about it.

We got to vote via absentee ballot and they only told us the results because we needed to know who our Comander in Chief is for our Battalion Comander's Inspection we had before graduation.

70k easy, especially with the new 1500 hour rule going into effect. Also, that's just to give you a chance for being a right seat on a little itty bitty airline.
Hey, you know if brits can stay there?
I forgot to post on here that I graduated RTC on Oct. 5.
I'm in my schooling now as a Fire Controlman in the Navy.

Congrats. Hope to see you around in the fleet.
How often does law enforcement train with military personnel? Such as terrorist drills, national emergency's, ect. I was thinking about joining the military for a while, but now I just don't know if I can do four years with little time off in between. I'm going to get a degree in criminal justice, and be a police officr, and maybe apply to get on a swat team after the required service period(2 years.)
Happy Veterans day everyone. Thank y'all for your service!
Happy Veterans day everyone. Thank y'all for your service!
You're welcome. Thank you for coming here and posting. This job isn't always easy but it makes it worth it to hear just one person say "Thank you."
Finally, after a few months of waiting, 101st CAB, TF No Mercy had its patch ceremony today. I finally got my combat patch!

3rd BCT's Colonel and Command Sergeant Major also stopped by to shake my hand and congratulate me on being the Soldier of the Month, and gave me their coin.

Then, later on I did a big favor for one of the medevac guys and he gave me his patch for it.

All in all, a pretty good day.
RAKKASANS
What was the favor you did for the medevac guys?
and whats the exact translation for the latin at the bottom of the badge, because my translation comes off as "Flying to prevent death" (I took 2 years of latin, and im still terrible at this "language")
