Hey, so do you guys consider the Coast Guard the military and, if so, anyone have any information about it?
While they are part of the DoD, I guess you could call them a part of the military. However, their primary roles (search and rescue, counter-drug operations, homeland security) are very specialized and not as diverse at the Army, Navy, Air Force, or Marines.
I've had the opportunity to treat many Coast Guardsmen and while some people in the Navy give them a hard time, I have the utmost respect for what they do. Overall, they are very fit, work hard, spend more time at sea that many people in the Navy do, and they seem to be very satisfied with their career.
That's all really good to know. I'm very seriously considering applying for (and hopefully joining) the Coast Guard for my gap-years before I go back to college after my undergraduate.
I want to serve my country, but I personally feel that the best place to do that is... well, in my country! No offense to anyone serving abroad, of course.

That's great to hear. Being in Cuba, I see many Coast Guard cutters come down here to resupply all the time. Nice bunch of people.

I am currently a PFC, about to get a battlefield promotion to SPC.
So any FP Marine Corps recruits looking at a July ship date to Basic? I'm set for July 29th (Parris, not San Diego)
Okay cheers mate and congrats as well!
That winter break hiatus fucked up my PT score good.
Never made it to MEPS, halfway there, the recruiter got a call telling them that MEPS wanted my medical records from my doctor for a surgery I had on my eye, to prove that it was only done to strengthen the muscle and nothing else.
So the waiting continues.

Were you diagnosed with strabismus when you were younger?
Were you diagnosed with strabismus when you were younger?
Yep.
Had three surgeries.
6 months,(inner muscle of the eyes) 9 months (outer muscles of the eyes), 14 years (to correct floating in my right eye). No negative affect on vision, peripheral or depth perception, eye no longer floats either.
if its going to DQ me, i need to know now, because my window to apply to college and start pre-med for the fall semesters are closing, as well to start applying for the EMS program.
So I have a friend in the Navy that was medically discharged because he had a munitions cart slammed into his knee.
Are they really that trigger-happy with medical discharges?

All the branches are. I did a brief stint as a holdover airman after BMT, so i got to see the med hold side of hell. The kind of shit people were getting held up over, and in some cases discharged with, was straight up silly. I know someone who had a very specific food allergy(i think it was a very specific and single type of berry) that at worst would give her a rash. She almost got discharged over it, but eventually got cleared...something like 3 months after finishing bmt.

I wouldn't say that would disqualify you. As long as your vision is still intact, not having any complications from the sugery, and that you have all of this documented by your medical providers, you should be OK.
I'm not too familiar with MEPS' train of thought on that but that's just my 2 cents from a clinician's standpoint.

The military is cutting down. Also, your legs and feet are like the biggest, most important thing in the military. Once those go out, you're done for. Especially ankles.
Just placed in my application for to join the Australian Army full time as an Groundcrewman Aircraft Support.
Just a word out to all you guys still in high school: FINISH THE SAT!!! In high school since I was joining right after I graduated, I said fuck all the college bullshit applications and I didn't take the SAT. 6 years later, and I'm trying to apply for college and it's biting me in the ass. Since I've been out of high school for so long, I forget even the most basic math. When I got out of the military, I tried to take the SAT again, and I failed the math miserably. TAKE THE SAT, while your mind is still fresh!

Doesn't the U.S military offer further educational options and studies while serving in the military?

Universities still want to see your ACT/SAT scores.
(it helps boosts their stats, which also helps them get more people to apply to their college, and more funding, etc etc)
Glad ive taken my SAT/ACT and did well on them before I am enlisting.

Depends how much downtime you have depending what job you have. Some jobs like Admin or other rear jobs have enough downtime to where you can take online classes. I would not recommend doing something like infantry, because their is very little down time to further your educational opportunities.
I want to get my associates while i am in at least in a 3-4 year time-span, so when i get out I can jump right into doing the last two years of a BSN or Biology/pre-med degree.
Any of the guys in the Navy on here, especially those on the medical side of things, does that sound realistic?

I'm not military or have done anything related to medical field, but I've done my fair share in transferring from colleges. So here's the deal, some colleges, depending on how old you are OR how long you've been in a college program will allow you to bypass the whole sat/act ordeal. Also, I'd look into getting at least a bachelor in whatever field you want (I know I know). I've just seen too many people screwed over by an associate degree. Take my advice with a grain of salt if you will, but I thought I'd just throw it out there.

The Air Force recruiter said all airmen who get through basic and tech have an accredited associates. I'm not sure if that is true, but it sounds better than what I'm doing now.
I think the coveted status of the Blue Infantry Cord is now forever...tarnished

What the.....this is a retarded. Reminds me of those people who say wear pink to show your breast cancer awareness! That shit does not belong in the military.
We had those at Goodfellow AFB in 2011, but no one wore them because the ropes looked retarded as fuck, so they just got rid of them. The airmen who went through the training kept doing what they did.

Sounds like bullshit. If not, its useless, as you wouldn't be getting ANY-core classes out of the way, which is what makes of an AS degree most of the time, and which helps you get a lot of useless shit out of the way when it comes to going after a BA.

I'm not sure either. I've just begun my second semester as a freshman at a state college because I don't know what to do, so any shortcuts to an AS perks my interest.

You're correct, you don't get any core classes out of it. However, you could always CLEP your way through. I just need speech and I get my AS. All in less than a year.
Well, I was sworn into the Navy today and have been given a OCS date of February 17th. Any tips for OCS/bootcamp?
*I've looked through the 59 pages for all the gouge I could get, I'm just trying to get as prepared as I can.
