The paperwork doesn't stop when you are an officer. If anything, it gets worse.

Paper work is bread and butter of the military.
Well, I was sworn into the Navy today and have been given a OCS date of February 17th. Any tips for OCS/bootcamp?
*I've looked through the 59 pages for all the gouge I could get, I'm just trying to get as prepared as I can.
Don't piss off the Gunny. That's all I'm going to say.
How should I respond next time to a Marine Lt.Col. calling me by my first name...then a bunch of LTs wanting to have cigars with our team at the pit. Did we just become instantly popular or something?
Hell..."You want to play some D&D with us sir?"
If anyone has any Army National Guard questions, going to college, getting highway transferred, split training certificate, ROTC, ECP. Any questions that relates to the Army National Guard I can probably answer. Ask before going to a recruiter because I went to a AAA recruiter according to my state and he still lied to me, or hella twisted facts.

NG recruiters from my area tend to be honest actually. They work hand-in-hand with ROTC.

Not a bad time of the year to be in texas either.
It'll be nice for the next 3 months. Than you got 4-5 months of 40-60 days worth of 105+ heat most likely.

I wont be too bad, I went through basic at Ft. Sill in the summer, 115+ degrees for most of the duration.
So i was wondering, how long does it take for MEPS to review your medical records? I know this is one of my first lessons with "hurry and wait". But wait for how long?
They took 2 weeks for me, but I didn't let them know my whole medical history, otherwise I would have been thrown out for back problems.

I only gave them 14 years worth of medical records from my eye doctor, which covers the three surgeries to correct my strabismus.
Well, since i hear that MEPS takes a while to review records, i guess ill send out some college Apps this weekend, because I am genuinely still worried that the quantity of surgeries i have had on my eye will be enough for them to want to DQ me.

That's a good move on your part. Be prepared for contingencies! Also, it may be different, but for some reason I applied for summer of 2013 over 3 months ago, and the college still hasn't got back to me. How long does it take?

Depends on the college.
if its big boy college, where you go to actually get an education, not just party, they are known to make you wait a few months to know. If its a school that is a little less prestigious, you should know fairly quickly, as in a month or two. But since we're half way through the educational year, you should have heard by now, or it should be around the corner. If you know anyone who has applied at the school, ask them how long it took to hear back.
So in a few weeks to a month or two. Also i would still apply for grants/scholarships, the GI bill from my knowledge won't take you the full way.
But you applied early, thats smart. I should of done that, and I feel like shit for not doing so.

What scholarships are out there? My buddy told me of one that was like a free grant, but I forget the name.

Tons, just gotta look. For instance, the state of colorado, as long as you're a resident, will pay so much for each credit hour taken. So I dropped from a $3500 in state tuition down to $2500 tuition all just because I became a colorado resident.
Also, as far as colleges giving you a letter, it takes from a month to around four months depending on the school.

I get the Pell Grant, along with HOPE for being a Georgia resident that made a 3.5+ GPA. HOPE covers 90% tuition and Pell covers the rest (fees, books, etc.) I'm only at a local state college so it isn't too expensive, because those two combined is $2,500 per semester and I get a rebate after all is said and done.
I went to the air force recruiter today, apparently they require you to be ten pounds below the max weight for some reason. So now I need to go lose five pounds.

There's different requirements for each set of recruiting stations, just due to the many applicants already. The (max/min) is more of a guideline to build the requirements for each set of stations. But you can do it! I have faith in you.
Does everyone have to meet with a private investigator from the office of personnel management after they DEP in? I got a call from one.
Anyone have any tips for what to bring for US army basic? I've heard that the guys who bring any tactical gear on their own (ie camelbaks, MOLLE backpacks, etc) catch a lot of shit from the DIs.
Semi-related: are you allowed to use your own boots in basic? I've got a pair of Sandstorm Hoodoos that are magnificent to run in that I'd like to keep.

When I went to ODS, we were expected to bring nothing except a few things that were listed. None of it included any type of military equipment. I would suggest using whatever is issued to you and only to use your own personal stuff at your discretion once you are done.

Don't bring anything, save for a few toiletries. Seriously, it will all be provided for you. You are not allowed your own boots. You are not allowed anything other than the stuff that they issue you or you get at the troop store that they force you through in reception. Don't wear hooah stuff either.

Ditto, did rather poorly on my squadron's mock PT eval but whipped myself back up in gym classes for a few weeks and did alright on the real thing.
So has anyone here personally met any well known higher-ups? I just thought about that because today, the President went to see some Wounded Warriors at Walter Reed and my wife was able to shake his hand.

Leon Panetta gave a speech in Monterey while I was in tech school, which I was there for. That's about as exciting as it gets.

That's the one, the Pell Grant. Thanks for reminding me. I just called the admissions office today and they said they were busy processing all the apps from the spring of 2012, which is why they never got to my summer 2013 app yet. Makes sense. More waiting.

I hope you applied to more than just one school.
