If you go officer through college ROTC or the Academy, you're going to get fucked with by all the enlisted members below you haha. We feast on new butter bars! Just a heads up :)
Anyway to avoid this? At least for a short amount of time. I would avoid going in with that mindset, because usually it's the E-6s and above who teach you the basics of your job before you build up what you've learned in school.

Seems sensible, don't see why fresh officers would get all cocky. Can learn a hell of a lot from the guys who have been in longer than you
Can I get LASIK before starting ROTC or should I wait until I'm in the program and see if the AF will foot the bill?
Can I get LASIK before starting ROTC or should I wait until I'm in the program and see if the AF will foot the bill?
Wait until you get your commission.
Can I get LASIK before starting ROTC or should I wait until I'm in the program and see if the AF will foot the bill?
I wouldn't really recommend getting LASIK in the first place. I heard your eyes will just regress and you need even more powerful surgeries to get it back to par. Just be a man and kick it in your standard-issued BCG's. God those things are ugly.
Hey guys, made it back to the US. Deployment was great. I can finally do all the shit that I want now, and wear civilian clothes finally. God it's so great to be back.
Thanks for your service. Hope things go well for you this year. Make sure to do your PDHRA.
Done and done. Did that before redeploying. All we have left are S1 and dental.
How long were you gone? It feels like yesterday I was reading your post saying you were leaving.
6 months. Army ran out of money and didn't need my unit there anymore.
So my ROTC thing is kicking off a military ball next month. Welp, time to dust off these old ASU's and get my RDI's and unit awards.
6 months. Army ran out of money and didn't need my unit there anymore.
Good to hear that you're home though.
Glad to be back. Though garrison is already rearing its head.

From my knowledge LASIK should be one of the last things you do when it comes to treating astigmatisms, not the first thing.
At least in the Army, LASIK pretty much disqualifies you for pilot service due to the fact they cut your eye open, fair warning. You might wanna look into PRK.

I'm wavering on military service... which I do all the time. I go between Aerospace Engineer and Air Force pilot 3-4 times a year EDIT: Dat 10 year commitment is what gets me
Well, if you're not contracted (i.e. don't have a scholarship), the first two years of AFROTC are non-committal. Lots of people try the program out for a semester or two then drop it. In fact, my freshman class started with 60 cadets, now as juniors we're down to 13. Some people think its what they want to do, but then when they're faced with the reality of it, they think twice. Of course, I understand that your situation with your parents might force you into making that decision early. So best of luck with your decision.
I think it's just the fact that some people have to wake up at 5 several times a week.
Unfortunately, due to the limited number of participants we can accommodate in Summer Seminar, we regret we are unable to invite you to attend this year's program. It is important to keep this in perspective - historically 60% of the new class of freshman at the Academy each year did not attend Summer Seminar. Selection to attend the Air Force Academy is not tied in any way to selection for Summer Seminar. Please continue the application process for USAFA!
Well, I had my hopes up but it's only the seminar, I still have a shot at being accepted to the academy. I need to work a hundred times harder now that I know there's even more applicants. Mjolnir, how's ROTC for you, or what made you choose it? I think it's time for me to start planning on backups along with the USAFA as my main goal. I just don't know much about the ROTC, I'm a high school junior right now so I don't know if I'm too late to start thinking about the ROTC as a backup.

Kinda want to see if I could be even competitive if I applied
What are your grades and SAT/ACT scores? Kinda want to see if I could be even competitive if I applied
I have two friends who got into the Academy. (Army and Navy). And know a third who went through the Naval Academy for 3 years, and dropped out when he couldn't do what he wanted to do (medicine). And a 4th who got denied into the USAF. From the guy I know who did it, he told me it sucked a lot, and that you get very little choice in what you want to major in. You pretty much have to be an academic god to get in, along with doing other things.
Yeah that's what I've heard/seen a lot of. Top AP students + sports + community stuff Also paindoc I haven't taken the SAT or ACT yet, only the PSAT (which people can still be accepted with). I was around average on that one. I'd love to get into the academy and major in computer science then get a pilot slot. That's why I should probably look into the ROTC as well.
Yeah. I'm leaning more towards Navy... mostly because pilot time commitment is lower, and the other job's in the Navy seem more enjoyable. I was 92nd percentile for PSAT, and have a 3.6 Cumulative. Took AP World last year, and AP US History, Language and Composition, and Physics(holy shit this is hard) this year [editline]Edit:[/editline] Yeah I probably won't do any ROTC programs or Academy. Or military service. I can just get my PPL and fly stunt planes to get my high-performance fix :v: Aerospace engineering degree for this guy. or robotics. or mechanical I'm indecisive
Paindoc, if the commitment is an issue for you, you should not look into military service. It is something you need to be 100% on, otherwise you end up either being or sounding like what is called a "60% Soldier".

If I can't commit 100%, then might as well not. I just feel like Military service would make me better as a person, and in the end I would come out better than I went in. I like the AF, but non-pilot jobs don't appeal to me. Navy would be cool, but being away on a ship for months would suck. Marines have a bootcamp that is bat-shit insane, and I have no shame in admitting I'm not tough enough for it. Army doesn't really sound like it would fit me, and I don't know of anything that would provide much of an intellectual challenge. So no military for this guy. I'll let you guys serve for me, which I appreciate

That shit will go by so fast if you truly enjoy what you are doing. I enlisted with the full intention of becoming a warrant officer. I enjoy my current job, that being maintaining OH-58D's, and I am coming up on 17 months in service come March. It feels like yesterday that I went to BCT, and yet I have already deployed and gone to several boards and whatnot. This stuff goes by quick. I dunno, I guess it is a matter of perspective. Also, Marine Corps boot is highly over exaggerated. The "I am not tough enough" thing is simply a mindset that you impose on yourself as an excuse. The simple fact is that you can make it through anything that you set your mind to. As for the "intellectual challenge" bit, that is all up to you. I have the highest ASVAB line scores in my squadron. I definitely need some intellectual stimulation. You just have to make it for yourself, such as enrolling in college, or doing brain challenges off-duty or something. I settle by plotting courses on sectional charts and studying for my SIFT test. Then I play some video games and get trashed with my buddies. It's all good. Hey, I understand. It is a big undertaking. All I can say is, do what is right for yourself. You know you far better than the likes of me, or any of us here.
