I'm thinking of the Air Force (family tradition and all) and I have two questions:
1) Honestly, how hard is BMT? During soccer conditioning, I was the slowest, but I think I 2 mi in under 13 minutes
2) I'm a picky eater. Will the AF snap me out of it?
Not even that anymore. They just make you swim across once and if you make it you qualify for third class swimmer.
You'd think the navy above all would require more for their swim quals. I mean the marine basic 4 swim qual is pretty much a 25 yard swim and walking across the pool in combat gear, but most people go for 3 or 2 and get some challenging stuff.

The basic one doesn't sound too difficult. I mean for us we had to swim 50 yards, tread water for 5 minutes and use our coveralls to float. I think the reason why they dont make you do more difficut shit is..well if you fall off the ship into the water, you're dead. That ship isn't going to stop for you.

1. Really depends on who you get for your MTI. You'll be doing quite a bit of running, so you'll have no problems in the later weeks of training.
2. Yes. Avoid the fish though. Shit is nasty!

I've PM'd you but I'll answer here anyway.
1. BMT is easy, just prepare yourself well for it. 2 miles under 13 is not slow, considering that's at least a 6.5 minute mile = a 9:45 Mile and a half which is worth 59.3 points on your PT test with under 9:12 being MAX points. If you're running like that, you could probably get one of the BMT "i'm good at PT" awards (I forgot the names).
2. Picky eater? Honestly, I am too. I am very picky. HOwever, at BMT there's no time to worry about that. You'll go hungry one day, and hate yourself for it. Next day? You'll shove what you can in your mouth. I used to make things taste better? Half assed ravioli? Plain white rice? Add those 2 on some bread and eat it quick. Didn't taste bad at all! You'll get past it.
On a side note, we used to eat 3-5 peanut butter cups a meal. Totally worth it until you want peanut butter out of basic and you're like "ehh.. no."

Peanut butter+yogurt
grapes+dry cereal
2 slices of bread+anything edible
You'll learn TONS of different food combos during your time there.
Sounds tasty

food
I used to just mash whatever they threw on my plate together and eat it all as fast as possible, it wasn't until I got to the field that I started to slow down and "enjoy" each food item individually
.
Jimmema, where were you deployed?
home
Jimmema, where were you deployed?
Nowhere, they had found blood in my urine prior during my pre-deployment flight physical. That's what led to the discovery of my kidney disease.
Thanks to all that replied :)
I LOVE bread, so the "make a sandwich out of everything" approach sounds appealing.
Next question: what was tech school like?
I do appreciate all of your answers, since it seems like recruiters will promise you the moon.

I'm currently in Tech school with a month left. You'll find that the first month or so out of basic is awesome as fuck, but then after that it can get dull. I've been in Intel school for 5 months, and have already lost my sanity due to the stress of the material we're learning. I'll be flat out honest and say that AETC can make you lose your damn mind. Play your cards right, and you can graduate without a problem.
Any specific questions you might have, feel free to shoot me a message.

It's like mini college with military bearing. IIRC correctly the Air Force has two phases of liberty. First phase you got to be back on base by 10 during weekends, and no civvies. With phase 2 you can stay out all weekend, and can wear civvies. You and your squadron/flight/whatever it is will have someone called an MTL, they're like your TI's in Boot Camp but with a nicer attitude. Errr, you have to march really fancy everywhere. Even when you're by yourself (unless you're phase 2). You'll have class represenatives and if you're one of them you get to wear a fancy rope.
That's about it I think.

Oh god, I love seeing the airforce guys marching by themselves down in Pcola.
If you plan on joining the airforce and find yourself in Pcola, be prepared to be fucked with.

It's so hilarious dude. I love it when the airforce used to march by us. I love it when they call cadence too, it kinda sounds like they're shouting HA HA HA HA in short intervals. They're all for that fancy shit, with the Navy it was more or less walking but we had to slightly move our arms.
They cut their corners like diamond when they're by themselves too. Don't forget the glow belt either.

Well what do you want to do as a Naval Officer?

Honey and onion rings is the best. Also would do yogurt with cereal instead of milk. One thing I did for a while was cornbread and milk until one day I accidentally got jalapeno cornbread. Never trying it again.

My Step brother did that, he's been in the Navy for 13 years and is a Lieutenant Commander. He makes bank.

I sent you a private message. I hate to be an ass, but l33tkill isn't even in the operational Air Force yet. I have 3 years in the Air Force, and can more or less get any question answered. (especially with pilots as I work directly with them).
Read my PM and respond back. Top right corner of facepunch.

I should rephrase it as "If you want more information about BMT and/or tech school, then send me a message."
His questions have been about BMT, and Tech school. I haven't mentioned anything operational.
Does anyone have any info about SERE training? I've only found scraps of info, so if anyone has anything or personal stories, that would be nice.
Its not necessarily bad, I'm just saying the only thing that you'll know for sure is how long your contract(s) is/are.
If I was on anti-depressants like a year ago. Could I get a waiver or automatically DQed i heard that now and days your just dqed..
Ahh I'm improving a lot on my run, I did a PFT today and got 88 crunches 17 pullups and a 18:34 three mile run time.

SERE school is a trying, godawful experience. It only really begins after you have been escaping and evading for about a week. They WILL catch you. When that happens, get ready for some awesome things like getting put into boxes too small to sit down in, waterboarding, getting beat the fuck up, watching your buddies get beat up, getting pressed for information, having some song playing like 24 hours a day while you are isolated, and at varying pitches and volumes. I could go on but I think I have said enough. Are you even in the military yet? I really don't get peoples' fascination with it.

SERE school isn't too bad until the second week when they plop you in the field. It isn't until friday of that week that they capture you. You get the piss beaten out of you, stripped down to your underwear and sprayed with a hose in the cold winter, they interrogation you over stuff you would have no idea about, and they put you in a little box with a can to piss and shit in. Shit fucking sucked yo.
