It doesn't matter if you know the language or not, you can still enjoy the music. Sure, it helps if you know what the lyrics mean, but it's not really a necessity.

I mainly listen to hip-hop for what the rapper has to say. This is why I can't get into the more braggadocio style artists(Most of them anyways). Don't get me wrong though I can respect a great beat and listen to a song just for that, but most of the time i'm trying to listen to the words.
I'm not sure you know what flow is. Or metre. You can't change it in post. It sounds like you think metre and flow = ability to keep a beat.
If you can't keep a sustained beat that fucks up your flow. You'll end up compromising your rhythm in the interest of staying on the beat.
I'm doing a huge research project on conscious hip hop. Here are some of my favorites that haven't been posted:
Don't know how we got past the first page without some Dead Prez, the King of Conscious Hip Hop
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4jNyr6BJZuI
Also, here's Apathy. One hell of a white rapper. Although I like Kanye, Apathy kicks his ass here.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dgEKhAYRGFw
Next we have Snowgoons, an underground supergroup that features Apathy on occasion. Some German composers work on their beats, which is why they sound so unique and gorgeous.

This is Army of the Pharaohs, a supergroup that has a lot of overlap with Snowgoons.

Last, but not least is the wonderful Sage Francis. He's more of a poet than a rapper, but he definitely deserves whatever attention he gets.

What the hell are you talking about? Have you ever rapped before?
Does DOOM really count as underground?

well he'd like to count himself as underground
Looking for criticism for a friend.

He's pretty much been doing this with amateur equipment and without spending any real money. I was just wondering what other people thought. As far as I know this is his first real mix.
I know he's not all that great, but he seems to have more talent than the average wanna be rapper you find at high school.

To the T is my favorite one he does, though I am by no means a heavy rap consumer.

And I'm not posting this because I'd consider him an established underground artist (ironic huh?), but because I know you guys know more about rap than I do.

well he needs to lay off the reverb and compression
Smack off half your smile
go to court with the suit
smack off the other half after trial

Nifty - The Realest
Not a fan of his lyrics, but the beat is awesome.

It's not horrible but I can barely hear it over the horrible mixing so it's hard to judge. Seems pretty decent. He needs to sort out his mixing so people can hear what he's saying.
Does anyone here like mc chris? His voice is hard to get into, but his instrumentation and lyrics are really fun. If anyone knows any other nerd rappers that are good can you post here?
mc chris- "Fett's Vette"

No, I'm just saying

You should read the articles if you're interested in hip hop and social issues
I skimmed the first one. And I understand that Nerdcore is nothing crazy original or genre expanding, but that doesn't mean it's not worth being listened to. I don't always listen to music for what is read between the lines. I often do, but nerdcore rap gives an easy path of connection when I don't care to have my mind blown. I like it, but I wish it was more serious. Like instead of some random nerd making a rap song, I'd like somebody with a good flow and voice to make a song.

Well, that's what we have actual rap for.
I know, but I mean content wise similar to what is in nerdcore. I like listening about gangsters as much as the next guy, but I connect better when the rappers are talking about things I actually like or know about first hand.

But how can you complain about "mainstream" rap being shallow and materialistic when nerdcore is just about the most shallow and materialistic genre there is, since it defines personal identity solely in terms of which toys and movies you like?
Nerdcore is Racist
Joking, right?
Nerdcore is the worst genre name I've ever heard in my entire life. The only thing worse than that would be nerdstep.
I <3 Doomtree, POS, Dessa, Brother Ali, and Blueprint.

I can connect with nerdcore better than with most of the mainstream rap. I feel good when I get the references made in nerdcore and like to laugh when jokes are made. I don't think you're giving the genre enough credit.

So you don't have a problem with shallow materialism after all?
It depends. I'd rather listen to mc chris than Lil Wayne or Drake all day.
the only real problem I have with Drake is that in his song 'forever' he says "understand nothing was done for me" but his family are quite well linked to the music industry, and he was already an actor prior, so I imagine he had some things done for him.
P.O.S. and Dessa are pretty darn good

Also WHY?

Anticon Records in general make some great music.
Also I'm not sure where they stand 'underground' wise, but I'm a fan of Cannibal Ox, and a friend of mine is actually acquainted with Vaste Aire.
