It depends. I'd rather listen to mc chris than Lil Wayne or Drake all day.
It depends on what? Ethnicity? It's not like mc chris's songs aren't vastly more shallow and misogynistic than Drake's ever were.

Yeah but we're talking about Drake, a suburban half-Jewish kid from Canada. Who was on Degrassi.
yeah drake doesn't really have street-cred
I don't know about you guys, but I'm definitely addicted to bitches with beepers.

I've seen a lot of bad shit in my life, but I've never been in danger like a lot of rappers that I've listened to have. I think it's the fact that there is such sincerity in the lyrics and the projection of said lyrics, that makes me genuinely empathise with them. I think if a rapper can do that, making a middle class kid understand where they are coming from, then they deserve to be respected for just that.
I don't know why you have to relate to music in order to enjoy it. [editline]4th December 2010[/editline] I mean the vast majority of metal I listen to I certainly don't relate to.

And a poets chiefest aim is to move you with his or her lyrics. Obviously there is tons of great rap that isn't about emotions or hardships, like the majority of Wale's album, but in the song 'Fuck you, Lucy' by Atmosphere, you can feel where he is coming from when he's talking about this girl who he can't move past, and it adds an extra layer to the music. I think Metal is a little different because some bands give lyrics a backseat as opposed to the musicianship, but I've always connected with 'Walk' By Pantera, because I've been in the situation the protagonist of the track is in myself.
This is the only genre of art were escapism from the mainstream sucks, cause the shit stay underground and the greatest rise from it. Mos Def sucks. So bad. Coming from a black person who may've heard A LOT more hip-hop than any of you have.
It depends on what? Ethnicity? It's not like mc chris's songs aren't vastly more shallow and misogynistic than Drake's ever were.
Seriously? Why are you accusing me of being a racist? I said that I like mc chris and not Drake or Lil Wayne. I therefore must be racist. But way to use your contrived outrage to avoid answering the question :colbert:

Ethnicity is not a factor. Notorious BIG is probably my favorite rapper.
Rhyme Asylum, awesome British rap group. Rhyme Asylum - This is Where
Nerdcore is Racist
That's a pretty stupid article. Although The Protomen do pander to nerds, most people can still make the same emotional connections to the lyrics and the theme doesn't evaporate if you don't have any knowledge about Megaman. And I for one enjoy their music, they have some really catchy riffs. :colbert:
I hate underground hip-hop fans constantly crying about how popular rappers suck and how their favorite mediocre rap groups don't get enough radio play and how they know about "real hip hop" but I don't cry about it all the time.
Touche. I mostly meant the ignorant fans that prefer to not expand their tastes and acknowledge Wayne as the best without ever listening to other rappers. BTW, Killah Priest.
yeah drake doesn't really have street-cred
What does that have to do with him making music though?
What does that have to do with him making music though?
well when you're rapping "understand nothing was done for me" like you were born in the ghetto, but in fact you're a middle class jew from a musically connected family and were previously on a canadian teen show, it sort of damages your credibility.
credibility is very important in hip-hop because it influences the music keeping it real is important, that's what made kanye west's recent album very good
