There is only one thing scarier than Sadako and a crispy zombie tag-teaming you [sp]at the bottom of a well[/sp], and that is a vindictive Spike.

MAJOR SPOILERS! THIS WILL RUIN THE GAME FOR YOU!
On the virus.
[sp]Okay, so you know the zombies. They come from a virus that makes its victim immensely durable but insane. Zombies are calmed by sunlight, and apparently do not need to eat. Sometimes, the victim DOESN'T go insane, and instead just suffer from the fact that they're rotting from the inside-out, can't feel anything, and really want to kill people.[/sp]
On Jake Hawkfield and why he has rocket-powered kicks.
[sp]Jake Hawkfield's house has been under surveillance for quite a while, because he's[/sp][sp]a clone made by the Western Janus that is somehow immune to the zombie virus made by his creator's counterpart: the Eastern Janus. Both these groups intend to produce amazing soldiers, West tried it through cheap and easy soldier production, East tried it through immensely durable soldiers that require far fewer supplies. Both succeeded at their goals, but ended up with things going horribly right: West's clones rebelled and are now impossible to reclaim without going straight in and shooting the clone's co-workers, East made zombies.[/sp]
Why the fuck is there a zombie in this house's well, and why is his name Angelo?
[sp]Angelo was a member of the team assigned to the surveillance agents, but was mysteriously betrayed by ANOTHER group. He and his friends were shot, thrown in a well, and burned (sorta) alive. Somehow, Angelo was infected during or before this, and as such managed to "survive", albeit with two broken legs, third-degree burns all over his body, deadened nerves, and a real nasty staph infection from being trapped for a while in a fucking sewer at the bottom of an old well.[/sp]
[sp]Angelo spent a long time just laying there, in absolute pain. Then he decided to get the fuck up and start finding a way out, using two pieces of rusty rebar for crutches. Since he's both rotten AND horribly burnt, a single slip resulted in those makeshift crutches being jammed into his legs and forcing him to hobble along at horribly slow speeds, to keep himself from literally falling apart. As it turns out, being a zombie doesn't do wonders for your fine motor skills.[/sp]
What happens next?
[sp]There IS a way out of the sewer, and Spike has managed to find it. The exit leads directly into the shed out front, with all the guns and reloading benches. The night after escaping, Jake heads up to his bedroom to find some messy red footprints leading in. As you round the corner and peer into your bedroom, you see Angelo hanging out and wheezing that he's sorry.[/sp][sp]Jake's Wife, Samara Sadako "She" Grudgebitch von Hawkfield, grabs Angelo by the thighs and drags him kicking and pathetically wheezing into the bathroom. This is the last you see of poor Angelo, but there is still LOTS of shit to come.[/sp][sp]One of the most ominous portents for Chapter 2 is the fact that the only other notable thing in the forest is a fence leading into a dark tunnel, with smokestacks beyond on the horizon. Presumably, we're going to have all sorts of fun exploring a broken-down factory with She and Jake's Guilt raining hell down upon us.[/sp]
This isn't even all the shit in the game. There's more weird lore shit in the dreams and main campaign, but I can't be assed to go replay it all.

[sp] Wait, where'd you hear about the East/West Janus stuff? I've never seen that before, and I played through entirely some two months ago. [/sp]

[sp]It's based off a lot of educated inferences. By reading your father's journal and listening to all the dream conversations you learn that your father was involved with the Western Janus, and the final journal entry from your father directly refers to either twins or clones that are very clearly not his original son. The zombies made by Eastern Janus aren't immediately and directly supported in-game, but it's going to be a rather obvious plot twist, or I just can't remember whatever in-game source ties the East Janus with the zombie virus. Hell, for all we know the zombies resulted from Dr. Romero's dream manipulator experiments in Nightmare House 2, because NLH Hospital and the SWAT guys do exist in Underhell.[/sp]
