The perception of the map itself is also a bit strange, everything either seems taller and bigger than it should be, or smaller than it should be.

Makes the game way more creepy IMO for some reason, it's kinda a surreal shitty graphics thing Afraid of Mon-stars does.

I agree completely, it has to do with the element of aesthetics and stylization, and how a well stylized game can be infinitely scarier than a game with purely a high graphical fidelity.
