Clearly in this situation it was entirely unnecessary. It would have just made matters worse had he the OP broken loose and retalliated. He did the right thing to run away and now he gets the proper people to deal with it.
Now, if he was left with no other choice, and had the window of oppurtunity; then yes it would have been appropriate to kill him. But only if he had to. As we see here, he clearly didn't have to.

But now his parents are going to have to deal with the fallout. If they try to take his gun away or send him to an institute, who is to say he won't try to choke/shoot them to death too?
