It's the people that make up a country.
If 25% is really hardcore about keeping it like it is, and 75% just doesn't care that much, it will stay as is.
Australia is a great country, we have killed the native people to here and taken over their land, but that's history and it's over and done with.
Most of the people in power now are real assholes and they can't run a country for shit.
other than that, it's a great country and i'd advise anyone to come here, at least for a holiday.
Australian Outback? Beautiful? Ha.

What does the commonwealth do anyway? It holds the commonwealth games, gives money out incase of need, and gives HM The Queen (thats the proper, legal way to say it) some control over said countries, and the Queen doesn't use that power at all.I don't think that any country has the choice to exit commonweath anyway.
OT:
*cough*Left 4 Dead 2*cough*
I don't see the big deal. Here in America we slaughtered Native Americans when we first settled here. Though people still treat them shitty today, thats a whole other story. As for black people complaining, they can just shut their mouths. The only goddamn culture in the world that complains about something that happened to their "Ancestors" and did not physically hurt them. Plus I don't think people should have a right to bitch about something they did not take part in or were affected by. All in all, people just need to learn to grow up and not such little things bother them. For instance, here in America, people are so fucking sue happy it's unbelievable.

You've borrowed our flag for one quarter of yours. Therefore, any olympic medals the Australians win, we should get one quarter of them.
Britz rule lololol.
What are the disadvantages of being a Commonwealth country anyway?
I can't think of any at all.
Bad things happened to native people across the world when Europe when colony nuts, that Howard guy couldn't go back in time and save the aboriginals, apologising for his ancestors being shit is better than nothing.
Crikey mates get the shrimp on the barby and get your shit together.
I wouldn't be proud to be an Australian either when my government treats me as if I am a goddamn two year old that can't make moral decisions for myself. Those evangelist fundamentalist Christian fucktards need to be dealt with as soon as possible.
I like Australia.
Better than Sweden anyhow, lots and LOTS of rural areas (I'm a countryperson, the place I live in has about 140 inhabitants), lovely nature, splendid fishing.
Still, you're whining over some censorship on the internet? Get a life.
Besides, I like the flag.
I have watched Avatar... It's basicaly the same... With out guns ships 'n such...
There 's the problem!
Ban them!
Seriously, you are right. But it could have been worse.
Well, I live in South Australia, it’s a nice place full of trees and big national parks, the people for the most part are friendly and the beaches are beautiful when they aren’t clogged with little screaming kids. But once a year we have this day, Australia Day, it happens on the 26th of January and is the anniversary of the first fleet landing at Sydney cove back in 1788… it is also the day that us white people invaded the Great and bountiful Australian Outback and started killing it’s Indigenous people. Now days Australian Day is a day for having a BBQ or going to the beach and swimming in the cool waters, people run around with big Australian Flags on their chests or over their backs, Cars have little flags out the windows and people love sticking those tattoos on their cheeks… I don’t… I think it is totally wrong what people do, celebrate a day that we destroyed a Race of people and destroyed their land, the Australian Outback used to have hundreds of thousands of Indigenous Australian living all over it, now they are living in outback shanty towns with no power, heating or medical care. They are abused by people for being Different and the police do nothing about it, there are some that aren’t but they are usually not fully Indigenous, half Australian Half not, I have nothing against this.
I am also Troubled by this:

This flag is wrong... When this man was in power:
(This is also the man who though apologising to the Indigenous australian 200 years later would help.)
The country had a Referendum, Choose separate from the Commonwealth or stay with them... He made the voting card himself and the yes vote was a 300 word long statement and the no vote was the same so people just chose the first one because they couldn't be bothered reading it, the vote came in "no" we stayed part of the Commonwealth. Afterwards newspapers around the country took votes and 75% said they want to be out of the commonwealth.
These days you get all these people (usually on Australia day) complaining about "Why would we want to change the flag?" Well it's got this huge ass Union Jack in the corner that’s says we want to be part of the commonwealth! We don't! We need a flag change! I don't want some flag that says "I'm part of the commonwealth of Briton!" (Nothing against you, I’m just not British). The Australian Flag at the moment shows that we were part of a huge group of people that took over a small community of people and killed them for their land the Australian flag should look like this:

THIS IS THE REAL AUSTRALIAN FLAG!
I think I have ranted enough… Discuss?
Be original with flags. Most flags are repeated colors with the same shapes. Boring as hell. Yours looks like Germany's with a circle.

First they came for the communists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a communist; ... etc.
Here in England I had one friend who is Australian, he lived there until he was 6, then he came to England, and on Australia day he was showing some serious national pride. It made me happy to see someone so patriotic, because from what I can see it seems like a really cool place, my aunt and uncle just moved there, and I hope to go and see them soon. You should be like my friend. Just be happy. It's not like being in the commonwealth matters. I say that the commonwealth made it a better place.
Ignore me though because it's not like I actually know anything about Australia.
Oh good, one of these threads

I also want to move there. :neckbeard:
But I'm stuck in Svidenn (Read with Swedish accent) a couple of more years! :argh:
I live in Victoria and there's no other place id rather live, well maybe for mars. Its just those retards in Government who think censorship and catholic values is the right way to lead a country.
As for the Indigenous Australians and im not trying to be racist, but they not really helping themselves. They think just because we killed most of them off 200 years ago that they can sit around an expect to be taken care of by the taxpayers, obviously im only looking at the small majority of them and ive seen it myself when i went there for social service.
I hope that didnt sound to wrong.
lalala im an aborigine look at me i cry about land that i couldnt defend until its given to me then sell it off for housing development and then blow all the money on drugs and gambling
I pretty much agree with everything you have said OP, we need independence and Aboriginals need to be treated as par to the rest of us. :C
Also what the fuck, you're from Australia Muffin?
Here's the problem I have, Aborigines were sitting on Australia for quite a while, since 40,000 to 125,00 surely evolution would have played a minor part in their intelligence so attempting to make everyone equal is impossible(talking about education) as there isnt a level playing field from the start. Their problems with alcohol are proof enough that we arent the same.
Also why should our flag be the flag of a minority, our flag should represent what we are which are people who came over from Europe and settled here. The aborigines could have been wiped out if someone else had settled here. I'm all for giving them rights but they need to try and integrate with our culture instead of building their own communites then complain when they dont have enough money.
I put partial blame to the Government for mismanagement of funding to Aboriginal communites but maybe if they could integrate better we wouldnt need to fund them. All the other nationalaties who come here seem to do fine but they've come from places where society exisited before we arrived.
As much as I want to see Aborigines as having the same capability for intelligence I cant arrive at a logical conclusion that dicates this being possible. Thousands of years of evolution with limited building(due to their nomadic tendances) would have favoured strength and agility of intelligence.

the only way set the aborignals right would we some sort of program where the children are separated from their families and brought up in a healthier environment.

We already tried that.
Worked great, but then they accidentally a racism

like dump them in a landfill
"snip"
The racist folk that get drunk on Australia day and cause shit are there to be ignored, every country has these people. They are called idiots.
Unfortunately the rest of the world sees reports of isolated racism and assume it's the norm (Kinda like kangaroos being everywhere, deadly creatures etc.), it's not and it shits me when people from other countries try to tell me what it's like here. I see it more and more often on the internet lately, mainly due to internet censorship and such.
I'll just say for the record, Australia isn't China (yet) it's still a great place and I wouldn't want to live anywhere else. Yes there are racists here, aren't there racists everywhere else too?
Horrible things were done in the past, I'm sure no other nation has done horrible things in it's past thought, right ?
Hate to point this out to you guys but a portion of Australian teens are being racist to Asian people. That's what I've heard. Plus the government have heavy censorship on violent video games and the internet.
Most of my friends are asian...

So what you're saying is that a large portion of our flag should be stolen from the flag of the People's Republic of China?

If anything we are apparently being to harsh on Indians but it seems like minorities are attacking other minorities. I have plenty of asian friends but I guess that doesnt automatically mean everyone acts the same.
There's one main guy who is stopping there from being a 18+ rating on games, I think it's ridicolous because most games remove a bit of blood here and there and get a 15+ rating which doesnt remove any of the underlying killing or violence, it just makes it a little less fun to play(no gibbing :P)
Hate to point this out to you guys but a portion of Australian teens are being racist to Asian people.
yes because Australia is the only country in the world with racist people.
But seriously - The students that got bashed were Indian and the attacks happened in some very seedy neighbourhoods that nobody in their right mind would hang around in at night.
I find it interesting that an Indian gets bashed and the Indian government and such get all up in arms about it, like no other people in Australia are getting bashed or are victims of crime.
It's strange.
