A note, if you said that Awesomeness is basically your health, and it depletes if you did something wrong or stupid. Does that mean if you're extremely low on it and you do something really illogical and relentlessly idiotic not related to damaging yourself, you still die anyway? Also, why is the inventory still 22 slots instead of 16?

Ask the merchant if you can agree on a price to have him give you anything you want in the medbay...although it dosent have to be money you could also try trading.
actually i guess it could be a bad situation in case their is nothing in there...but....just dont barter any weapons
