When a culture undergoes significant change its religion needs to change with it or else it will start losing followers to competing religions. As a result any religion that clung to medieval ideas in Europe eventually died out while those that didn't changed dramatically. Over that time period the Middle East and Northern Africa, where Islam is most powerful, has mostly been using Western innovations for the benefit of the theocratic leaders of the Islamic world rather than for the advancement of their nations' culture overall. As a result the demand for widespread change from Islamic leaders has come more slowly. When someone from that culture moves to a different one there's no great Islamic powers present to tell everyone in the area how to do things, just local mosques who are led by people who had to find their own way to adapt to this new culture. Violence is really the onlyway you'll get outright rejected from the modern world, thus you're going to have some western muslims who seem to blend in perfectly, and others who are nonviolent but still stick out like a sore thumb.
