Yes, you are very clever. Except that I have shown you my baseball, and you have not yet accepted that I have one.

I didn't say you had no proof of your claims, I was arguing against your mentality that the burden of proof lies with anybody who makes any sort of claim regardless of whether or not it's impossible to prove.

Ah. So I guess we're done, then?
I suppose so, unless you have a retort to something.
I fucking hate this equation bullshit:
x = 0.999...
10x = 9.999...
10x - x = 9.999... - 0.999... (or 10x - 0.999... = 9.999 - 0.999)
9x = 9
x = 1
You have to be retarded to believe that. Seriously? Do you see the flaw?
One of the biggest flaws: x = 0.999... ! SO WHY ARE YOU SOLVING FOR x?!
Ok, lets forget that big flaw.. If x = 0.999 step 3 would look like (9.999... = 9.999...) ; when we subtract x (0.999) it will be 9 = 9! GENIUS!
The other two are true.. Specially the blue one.
You must be so good at math.
[editline]4chan[/editline]
This thread is worse than the 4chan threads on the same topic.
I tried so hard to try and understand this but it's completely alien to me. I WISH I GAVE A FUCK ABOUT MATHS :'((

even your image contradicts what you're saying
The debate about .9 repeated is a giant circle jerk of wannabe mathematicians.
Oh hey guys I'm back in this thread again ho-

wait whoa what the fuck is going on here?
So basically round up...
Who cares THIS MUCH about math.
It's practically 1 but not exactly 1.
I wouldn't be angry if somebody used .999... as 1.

Math magicians.
It's ironic because a few days ago we were discussing that in the tf2 general chat thread
this thread is scaring me.
It's practically 1 but not exactly 1.

It's exactly 1.
So basically round up...
Nope, no rounding. .999... is exactly 1
you cannot say .999... < 1
you can say .999... = 1
.999... IS 1, they're exactly equivalent in every way
My solution to the "recurring number wat do" problem:
If you need to be absolutely, positively, pi to 6 billion digits accurate, recur as far as you need to
If you're doing anything else, round it
If you guys can't comprehend this, I would hate for you to find out why 0! = 1, or why x^0=1.

That isn't irony, that's just a coincidence.
It's exactly 1.
[editline]25th March 2012[/editline]
Nope, no rounding. .999... is exactly 1
No. 1 is exactly 1. .999... isn't exactly 1. Just like how .7 isn't exactly 1.
It's ironic because a few days ago we were discussing that in the tf2 general chat thread
No it's not, it's just coincidental
[editline][/editline]
Fuck
No. 1 is exactly 1. .999... isn't exactly 1. Just like how .7 isn't exactly 1.
See those 3 dots next to the .999? Those mean that the nines go on forever.
The consequence of this fact is that the value represented by .999... is exactly equal to 1.
No, otherwise it would be 1, not .999...
I am adamant about this.
No, otherwise it would be 1, not .999...

Okay, let me represent 1 in a different way.
2/2
It's represented in a different way, therefore it must be a different number! Wrong.
How about 10-9?
Are we going to argue that 10-9 =/= 1?
No. 1 is exactly 1. .999... isn't exactly 1. Just like how .7 isn't exactly 1.
The 0.999... = 1 equality is a Mathematically accepted and proven fact. I don't understand why people have so much skepticism about it. There's plenty of evidence that gravity exists and plenty of evidence that 0.999... = 1 yet you don't see many facepunchers running around claiming that gravity is null. To each his own I guess.
The world is flat.
Gravity doesn't exist.
The universe revolves around earth.
All of these were widely assumed by most people and it took a while before people accepted the evidence.
No matter how infinitesimal it gets, it still does not equal exactly 1.
For those of you who still claim that 0.999... =/= 1, I encourage you to research the subject and read through the proofs. It can be hard to accept something as true just because someone said so, but once you walk through the evidence it's quite convincing.
No matter how infinitesimal it gets, it still does not equal exactly 1.
False. If it is infinitely close to 1, it equals 1. That's how infinity works.
