Because in english-speaking countries there is no word "tovarishch", тавариш.
So their media used their closest relative translation - "comrade" i.e. a [I]colleague or a fellow member of an organization[/I] (an example of organisation : glorious political party of the people), thus that's the word they learned, used and associated with Russians.

It's a direct translation, but "russifying" the word comrade is kinda pointless tbh, it's not a Russian word on its own. There exists a sort of borrowed version of it and it's "камрад", literally just "kamrad" in Cyrillic.

Noone would be russyfing any words, were it not for our bloody weird alphabet. I mean, we literally have "soft symbol" (ь) and "hard symbol" (ъ), thats what they are called, used only for accent and pronounciation.
And cyrylic cursive is cryptologic meme :
