There isn't much reason to have a character who's a furry. Also, authors should justify why some characters appear vastly different from their peer, adding backstory (which should affect the character's decisions later, maybe even be why the story exists as an essential plot element). Personally, I can't really think of many reasons to justify why someone is an anthropomorphic animal.

Only stories where it can be really "justified" is when the setting is an entirely different planet (and I mean very different, not just furries in human shoes) or universe. Or there is some sort of crossover (human ends up on furry planet, that sort of thing) Other than that, not really.

One I'm reading now is "Light On Shattered Water" by G. Howell. I think there might be a few explicit scenes but they are few and far between and are definitely not the focus of the novel. I'm about halfway done is its pretty good IMO. Pretty cheap too, like $5 for the ebook (its only available as an Amazon E-book AFAIK though).
The premise is that the main human character accidentally ends up in parallel universe where cat-like anthros are the dominant species of Earth. However there is a culture and time shift as well (their society is roughly equivalent to early 1800's America in terms of time and technology). It also avoids the common trope of "Everyone Speaks English". So its not anthros for the sake of anthros.
The Pendragon series has cat-people in one of its alternate worlds. Not a bad series either, but it's YA so it's rather light.
Mentally swapping all characters/people I see in movies and books to be kobolds makes them so much more enjoyable.

Since we're discussing HTTYD2, I recently got the official art book for it and it mentions that originally for an introduction [sp]they were going to show Valka and her Bewilderbeast attacking Eret's fort, freeing the dragons he had captured for Drago before freezing it, but they cut it out because they didn't want to focus too much on the darker tone of the movie. I found that kind of weird since I thought Valka's Bewilderbeast didn't get a lot of screentime.[/sp]
