I don't know i have to disagree with a lot of your points, not to mention you need to realize that were getting 2 other movies and backstory is coming. There is also the Nickelodeon tv show which is technically canon.
The pacing wasn't really much of an issue as you're making it out to be, at least in regards to the actiony scenes.
[sp] the first antagonist didn't really require or necessitate backstory, it was an alpha dragon that manipulated other dragons, there isn't a legacy to explore there, its just a king dragon that abused and controlled the others. Drago i agree with in that he could use more backstory but the writers are using him like this on purpose to intentionally keep the viewer only half in the loop in that we only had stoics perspective on drago. We personally knew very little about him other than he lost an arm to a dragon and learned how to control them using fear.[/sp]

Mm, didn't realize that there's two future movies and a tv show to back it up.
[sp]I guess that the alpha dragon in the first film is justified for having no backstory (except perhaps some lore that they introduce later). In a run of four movies... it'd definitely be great to start the setting and characters.
Now that I think about it, I have a hypothesis that they needed time to establish Stoick's backstory with his wife at the beginning of the second movie, which is why it felt a bit long (since he dies pretty much after that).

[sp]I liked how much darker it was than the first movie. Your best friend is forced to kill your father? That's not something you see every day in an animation movie.
I thought that it surpasses the original in many ways, but it still feels like an obvious bridge between the first and the third movie. I figure that the pacing was bound to be a bit weird though since they had to introduce so much new stuff in the movie.
I hope that they are going to expand on how exactly Drago managed to control the alpha. They showed earlier in the movie that he used fear to control dragons, but how would it work with a dragon of that size?[/sp]
[sp]Since we're talking about HTTYD again, there's rumors that in the third movie that they're going to break Hiccup and Toothless up along with possibly making dragons go extinct due to a interview with the author of the book series where she said that the books and the movies are going to share their ending explaining why dragons are "no more".
Which I think is kind of a bad way to end the franchise, which I'm hoping to god that the rumors are not true.[/sp]
