as far as i can tell, there's very little to no shading at all in the show, and it has an outline shader (not the same thing as cell shading)
cell shading is when shadows projected onto a surface or character are segmented very clearly instead of being a gradient
[t]https://forums.unrealengine.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=39881&d=1431897337[/t]
the shaders on the middle and right are cell shading, they use solid colors for the shadows cast on the character (also the one on the right uses a ton of rim lighting for some reason)
No actually. RWBY doesn't use post-processing to achieve its lines. It exploits backface culling, cloning the character model, inflating it slightly, and then inverting the normals to create the effect. This provides a crisp outline effect that can be seen "in-camera".
Until V4, you’re correct. Dynamic shading was substituted (usually, as it DOES appear sometimes, like in the White trailer) for texture-based shading. The intent was to produce an effect like baked ambient occlusion and hive the artists control, as the dynamic shader could produce inoptimal results with Poser's limited lighting engine.
True dynamic shading is NOW used in the series, for better or worse.
...Have yoy never heard of "cel shading" before?
It's not supposed to look like CGI, it's supposed to look like a cartoon. Hence the outlines?
Then it fails miserably in its goal.
Calling rwby cel shaded is insulting. It did not even have shading for the first 3 volumes (entirely unlit) and had a stock maya toon shader applied for 4 and 5.
Roosterteeth has no excuse for something pre-rendered looking so bad. Especially after they saved time stealing other artist work.
Instead Guilty gear achieves the goal of looking like a cartoon. And it's realtime too.

I thought the asset stealing was only in the video game?

Stop... with the slander.
It's really pathetic to levvy baseless accusations just because you don't like a free show.
Occasional use of stock assets or purchasing rights to assets is standard practice, and since the number of times Rooster Teeth has been charged is ZERO, you can put it back in the deck.
You really think Monty would stand for his baby being sullied by illegal acquisition and use of assets? Have you NO respect for the dead?
That's the last I want to hear about it, so either lawyer up or dtop with the games.
They made a show you don't enjoy. They don't have to also be the Koch Brothers.
Vigilante you need to calm down.
You really think Monty would stand for his baby being sullied by illegal acquisition and use of assets? Some people don't like it, doesn't mean you have to go out of your way to call everyone liars and idiots.
Gene Roddenberry being dead doesn't mean that JJ Abrams or CBS's Star Trek is immune to criticism. Hell, doesn't even mean the stuff he worked on can't be criticized. There are communities dedicated to discussing Trek-flaws, albeit mutually appreciative of the show.
Exact same logic for Tolkiens work. And these are legendary masterpieces that will be remembered for generations no less.
Shitting on Lord of the Rings as a series for example isn't shitting on the man behind it. It's shitting on the work. No one has any care about the person behind the book. I'm sure Monty was a swell dude.

I'm going to let you in on a little thing: Monty wasn't a good animator. He admitted this himself. He was able to exceed in flashy fights and they were good to watch but don't look too close. I respect his work and I enjoyed everything he did but Rwby. Everything outside of his fight scenes was genuinely clunky.
Also he and Rooster Teeth stole assets
I'm reacting SPECIFICALLY to unfounded assertions that RWBY "stole" shit. Criticism is fine. SLANDER is illegal, and a serious accusation. It's absolutely defamation.

It's not slander if it's true. I'm sure you've watched the show so you'd at least noticed that the Grimm wolves looked similar to a popular 6 year old game that keeps getting released. Hell that Grimm dragon is definitely an edit Skyrim model
Also he and Rooster Teeth stole assets
Prove it, beyond playing the matching shell game. You have no evidence the assets weren't purchased legally for modification and use. Only one person in this conversation is breaking the law, and it's not RT.

It's okay to like something but that doesn't mean ignoring any valid criticism towards it. Dead people aren't immune to criticism either, even if they can't hear it.

Who? SpartanXC9? I do not comprehend.

Uh "matching the shell" is how you prove it? You're saying "just because they look exactly alike doesn't me they're the same!"
Do you want to know how I know they use stolen assets? why isn't Bethesda in the credits
Look up what "royalty free" means for me...
Stop... with the slander.

I myself happen to be an expert on stealing models. So guess what I have my hands on.
[T]https://orig00.deviantart.net/a752/f/2015/340/4/7/oh_god_damn_it_by_blueflytrap998-d9j9d7v.jpg[/T]
And no the irony is not lost on me.
I can verify the topology is the same for mmd assets. Down to the last triangle. Uv are barely edited and only to move them about to make room for some flavor bits.
But that wasn't even the worst part. The worst part isn't that the model quality is poor. Nor that it's poorly optimized despite being super low fidelity for something pre-rendered.
No. The worst part is the hands.
Look at this shit.

It's not even attached to the wrist. The polyflow is awful. It entirely lacks a uv. The texture is no joke a 2k solid color square. And it doesn't even match the skintone of the rest of the model.
This applies to every single hand from season 1-3.
Occasional use of stock assets or purchasing rights to assets is standard practice, and since the number of times Rooster Teeth has been charged is ZERO, you can put it back in the deck.
I'm well aware. They only purchased a small selection of models I'm afraid. Mostly firearms.
It's pretty obvious when they do as well as the textures remain largely unedited. To say it clashes with something unlit would not do it justice.
You really think Monty would stand for his baby being sullied by illegal acquisition and use of assets? Have you NO respect for the dead?
I don't think a forum poster using a man's death to try and deflect criticism is in any position to talk about respect.
That's the last I want to hear about it, so either lawyer up or dtop with the games.
I also happen to have previous work experience in criminal and constitutional defense. What they did sits in a particular grey area where it was modified enough where they could argue it's protected.
They were pretty attentive about it too. The model files for statues of the main team for example were commissioned from an external artist so they were entirely original assets, avoiding problems entirely.
They made a show you don't enjoy. They don't have to also be the Koch Brothers.
I never said they did.
Consider this. You're allowed to like things that are bad. But they aren't any less bad because you like them.
Look up what "royalty free" means for me...
Do you honestly believe Bethesda the publisher, the people who tried to shut down a card game for having "Scrolls" as the title would let a Microsoft partner who specializes in 8 minute videos use their assets royalty free?
Look up what "royalty free" means for me...
Legally speaking, none of us know if Bethesda's set up a royalty-free circumstance. People have ported Skyrim assets to other things (ie: Garry's Mod), but altering them for use in commercial projects is a different matter altogether. Even if RWBY by itself is free, it's got a licensed game, licensed manga, and other stuff, though one can argue on a case-by-case basis. Nonetheless, even if assets may not of been necessarily "stolen," attempting to out-lawyer a website that has numerous people that can call out bullshit en masse on a bad day is not the best way to go about arguing about this.
They've definitely got modified assets in there. And it's not exactly like their new assets are very good either, even if they improve things over the course of the volumes.

If that's the case, then why haven't they been sued?
Innocent until proven guilty.
You'll never trick me.
You're just trying to make me think like you.
But I'm my own person. I will not submit to ideological purity.
Stop persecuting me for what I love.
You don't even care. You just want to make fun of me.

I mean besides wanting to make fun of you this isn't about ideological purity this is about facts, and the fact is that you've already tricked yourself into thinking RWBY is anything but a low budget show.
You can like it all you want. It still objectively is a low budget low tier show. This isn't some big house budget tier anime project that has taken near a decade to finish. It's a home-made budget-free independent production.

Okay, what the fuck are you smoking, bub? Why are you being a chuuni about a web series?

You're pretty defensive over a cartoon that isn't that good.

... I know it's low budget. That's what makes it charming. I don’t understand why that's relevant...

I'm not making fun of you. It's fine to like Rwby but it's not that good. I wish you were this passionate about the series that Rwby has stole from since I think you would genuinely enjoy those. I'm assuming you have Netflix so definitely check out Fate /Stay Night: Unlimited Blade works. Velvet from Rwby is a direct copy of a character from the show (well more Noctis from FF15 but they're similar). Hell if you like Wiess watch Madoka Magika (both are on Netflix), if you like the fight scenes watch FLCL, if you like Yang play Final Fantasy 7 and if you like Ruby watch Soul Eater
I don't know what you mean by ideological purity I'm just supporting my points on why the show is bad.
They probably haven't been sued because no one has told Bethesda
Okay, what the fuck are you smoking, bub? Why are you being a chuuni about a web series?
A what?
If that's the case, then why haven't they been sued?
Is this a real question?
Do you honest to god think a hobbyist model and texture artist has enough in the bank where they could afford to go after Rooster Teeth? That's economic suicide.
this is amazing holy shit

that and how is bethesda supposed to know about literally every instance of copyright abuse
they have waaaay bigger things to do than worry about a tiny web series
christ almighty this thread went places really fast

I write RWBY... I'm going to animate RWBY.
RWBY is a part of me now. I...BECOME RWBY, in a way.
That is why I care.
