Any suggestions? I'd rather not pay over $800 for a damned bike, but I need a good commuter bicycle to get around campus.
Would give you mine if I didn't use it. Really light mountain bike.
It's purple.
Go look for used bikes on craigslist/local listings/tag sales. Buy one that's got some gears, fits you, and is in relatively good condition (not all rusted, brakes work, shifters shift). If you ride it you should be able to tell immediately if anything is very off about it.
It's my lazy arse and motorbicycling hobby speaking but generally for short distance commuting I'd look into buying a good used bike with decent brakes and installing an brushless electric rear hub for a total cost of around $400 including the bike. Sure, it's lazy - but really, commuting bikes are for commuting rather than exercise. An electric hub will prevent the bike commuter's case of coming in the building all exhausted, sweaty, disgusting, and with a bad case of helmet hair on hot days.

lol helmets
Maybe I should have made it clear that I want a new bike.
I was looking for companies or such that have good stuff.
I'm not sure how big your campus is but I ride a track bike.

Not as swagged out as that one though, I just have the same frame. It was about $500 plus $100 for a Leader fork. I put stuff from my old bike on the new Leader frame other than the fork, headset and bottom bracket.
I live in Toronto and I can cover 35 KM to Vaughan in just over an hour. My old bike a fuji track set me back about $500 but I could cover probably 25-30 KM in the same time on that old bike.

I don't really know much about bikes other than road or track bikes so sorry if that's more like what your looking for.
you should try junk sales, i found a mongoose 12 speed mountainbike frame and wheels for free and i bought a crank and seat and handlebars for about $75 from the internet, a little grease and some polish later, it was a brand new bike
if your looking for a new brand bike, treks are always very well built

Go to Walmart, a bike when your just getting from point A to point B,and you wont pay more than a couple hundred dollars
If you want quality get a Specialized. I have one myself and they are fucking great. http://www.specialized.com/
I've heard schwins or however you spell that, are good bikes.
