I think it's partly a fantastic driver. Look at me trying to reverse in ETS2! I don't care how good the steering is, I'm gonna zigzag like hell. Matter of fact, I won the closest race ever with Apache249 in ETS2. Down to the wire, in the quarry, we were in the same place; I went around the back of that parked truck and he reversed in; I won by a mere second.

But considering how unreliable Volvos electronics have been in their previous trucks, I wouldn't want to have it interfer with the elemental instruments, such as steering and braking; as long as you have a even tirepressure in your front wheels and steering that's not worn out there really is no problem keeping a truck straight when reversing, or going forward.
Really cool stunt though!
I think they were going backwards because with a semi-trailer, if you have to correct it even just a little you have to steer the truck itself quite a lot. Big semi-trailers also have steering on their wheels to allow tighter turns so the trailer's steering might also be helping with keeping it straight when reversing.

What do you mean with unreliable electronics? The issues I've had with Volvo trucks electronics was most of the time grounding issues, which itself was a result of bad repairs and maintenance
What do you mean with unreliable electronics? Wires breaking between the cabin and frame is also a common problem on trucks that have been around for a year or two, it's a result of tilting the cabin when doing maintenance or repairs.
Here's how they did it. Still pretty cool idea for commercial.
Van Damme, 53, was hooked to safety lines that aren’t visible in the film, and each foot is on a small platform that was built on the trucks’ side mirrors.
Van Damme’s feet aren’t secured to the mirrors, video director Andreas Nilsson said, “but we had him rigged so that if he would fall off he wouldn’t die obviously. We didn’t want to be responsible for killing the Muscles from Brussels.”
