This style of flamethrower would be used for agricultural use, basically burning down a field after the crop has been harvested or to remove weeds, the ashes are then plowed into the ground thus fertilizing it allowing the ground to become nutritious for the next season.

Basic farmers stuff but burning fields is now widely shunned in most countries, even through its really more economic than using artificial fertilisers.
