Yeah you're right we should wait until the brink of our planet's demise and then think about space
good angle, like procrastinating has ever helped us
ever
We can't even take care of the world we currently inhabit. Human beings are nowhere near responsible enough to go venturing off into deep space.
Also keeping in mind that space is infinite. THERE'S NO RUSH TO GET THERE
[editline]7th February 2013[/editline]
Yeah okay and then a terrorist/mad man gets one and we're fucked.
Countries can't scare eachother with something curable, yeah we're fucked if one's used.
that's why they're used as a deterrent
Because the deterrent system worked so well in WWI

Neither time nor resources are infinite though. That's the greatest form of procrastination. And just because key individuals on earth are incapable of not killing each other doesn't mean key individuals in science are incapable of discovering and accomplishing great things. Going to and exploring space is not a solution to any problems on earth, and these problems on earth should be kept in check so as not to inhibit human progress. Of course progress is inhibited, this world isn't perfect, moreover I don't expect it to be perfect, but that doesn't mean we shouldn't try.
Because the deterrent system worked so well in WWI
Well WWI happened and the Cold War didn't.
Difference being is that deterrent wouldn't make an area of the planet uninhabitable for generations
small difference, no biggie
Humans don't need to progress.
[editline]7th February 2013[/editline]
and it's not just key people. It's 90% of the world's population.
You can pull statistics out of your ass all day, but saying that humans don't need to progress is single handedly one of the most ignorant things I've ever heard.
Difference being is that deterrent wouldn't make an area of the planet uninhabitable for generations

No. But it did literally eliminate an entire generation of people

Explain to me WHY humans need to progress.
[editline]7th February 2013[/editline]
Why would the world be worse off if human beings did not progress.
[editline]7th February 2013[/editline]
In fact, I move that the world would be infinitely better off if humans never progressed passed hunter gatherer societies
you're right, we can let people keep dying of cancer. HIV, whatever. We can let our planet die because shit, why do we need to progress in renewable resource collection and distribution?

This just in: 90% of the world's population has taken up arms and begun shooting their neighbors.
Felix just think bigger. The world doesn't need to be a cauldron of everything wrong with humanity. Life isn't just school-work-retirement-death; life is fucking beautiful. I think it's important not to lose sight of that.
you're right, we can let people keep dying of cancer. HIV, whatever. We can let our planet die because shit, why do we need to progress in renewable resource collection and distribution?
All of those problems besides maybe HIV are a result of human "progression".
boy oh boy i hope you enjoy dying of the flu while we're colonizing space man
You've entirely 110% missed the point
What, as a species that has done nothing but advance, we should have at some point come to a halt and eventually died off due to plague or whatever?
oh man Im staying out of this argument so hard.
No. I'm talking about the mindset that "humans need to advance"
No they don't. Human advancement has done nothing but fuck shit up. And we're coming to a point where we are going to make ourselves obsolete. We WILL advance ourselves straight to our own demise.
There are cures/antidotes/containment measures, etc. for biological weapons.
Oh no there aren't. I'm in a Weapons of Mass Destruction Class, and we're currently focusing on Bioweapons.
The biggest issue with bioweapons is that once they're unleashed, there's no controlling them. Because of the long development of most bioweapons (days, to weeks, to months) the virus and bacteria based weapons are capable of spreading worldwide before anyone even can identify they've been used. In addition, because of the nature of the weapons, they are extremely hard to track, and hard to impossible to attribute.
If a terrorist group were to acquire Soviet manufactured anthrax, there would be no way of proving who actually used it.
FUN FACT: several reporters discovered 3 fridges of LIVE SMALLPOX vials at an abandoned and unprotected Soviet site, so don't think they're hard to acquire.
Many of the most serious bioweapons have no cure (ebola, smallpox, and pretty much any of the virus based weapons), and severe attacks of things such as anthrax in America alone would completely deplete the GLOBAL stockpile of vaccines. With dilution, America has enough vaccines for smallpox for its people, but the vaccine is lethal to people with skin disorders as mild as eczema and far from perfect.
Bioweapons are also the cheapest and simplest to manufacture of all WMD's, to the point where less than $1000 and bachelor degree training can result in someone producing enough anthrax to coat any major city with proper methods of spread.
While nuclear weapons present the opportunity of global annihilation, anthrax has been found to remain volatile for 250 million years and is extremely lethal to humans and many animals if inhaled.
The greatest benefit of nuclear weapons is that they don't have to be used to be effective and they can be easily secured and kept track of. Bio and chemical weapons are far easier to steal and use, and are considered the most likely threat to modern security, to the point that most experts fully expect a biological attack on the USA by 2025.
Tl;dr: Bioweapons are the most terrifying, least controllable, and cheapest WMD's and should NEVER BE USED OR DEVELOPED BY ANYONE
Going to my first skirmish in a few months this Feb 23rd...mega pumped. Going to bring at least 3 friends with me seeing as that's how many guns I have that I'm willing to loan out to them (not my babies). It's this dude's back yard in which he's built a bunch of wooden structures and placed oil barrels, cut paths etc.
Pretty sweet setup all in all. My friend will probably skirmish my FAL before I even do...maximum chairsoft
Listen felix I'm done arguing with you because you're obviously not gonna move from your standpoint.
I'm just gonna ask, what kind of mark do you want to leave on the world?
he'll probably tape bayonets on everything
I don't care what kind of mark, if any, I leave on the world. I don't need to be remembered or immortalized in history or whatever. All I want is a quiet, peaceful, happy life.
Then that's fantastic, good luck with that. Some of us want to accomplish things, make a difference. But humanity as a whole will die off if we sit by like you've chosen to.

I didn't even read you guys' argument but fuck it I'm going to mountain bike and make a life for myself and could care less what I accomplish in others' eyes so long as I have a good time. Call me selfish or lazy but I don't have to make history to be happy. I have my own personal goals to reach and they're nobody else's.
I can accomplish things and "make a difference" without the grandiose delusion of benefiting the entirety of humanity. Because frankly, I don't give a damn about the whole of humanity.

I agree up to a certain point. I'm not going to make A-bombs and blow up the world and be a detriment to humanity because well we're a species and I like us? Not that you said anything like that, but it's just a matter of self-preservation.
Listen I'm not dissing what you choose, I'm just saying I'm happy not everyone thinks like you, and I'm worried in the future more people are.
That's still pretty insulting

You remind me of me. Although I wouldn't mind being known as the first ace of the 21st century.

Well see that's what's beautiful about the world and humanity! Some people have the gift to do things that others can't, and most everyone is important whether or not they make a notable "difference".
Felix Baumgartner can jump out of things, for instance, built by the people smart enough to make said things, funded by a bunch of other people who have money because they're good with business, who control workers who do their jobs well, supporting their kids for the next generation etc.
Random example but whatever.

Ace as in fighter pilot?
I'm very much pro-advancement and transhumanism and things like that, but I can totally see were felix is coming from. Some people just dont care beyond the scope of their lives and theres nothing wrong with that. NPH, you're coming off as an asshole here.
Speaking of mountain biking, how are you on jumps? I find myself struggling to find the courage to hit bigger jumps. Probably has something to do with me fucking up my knee on one of my first jumps right after I started.
[editline]6th February 2013[/editline]
Yes, as in fighter pilot, but that's not really up to me, now is it?
