Can you explain what exactly your problem is with somebody saving up to get a nice thing?
What? I don't have a problem with that, I'm saying that poor people have better things to spend on than 50' inch tv.
I appreciate passive-aggressive "triple-periods-of-disgust" (...) and all, but I would like to hear your reasons.
"triple-periods-of-disgust" wow I haven't heard anything like that before and I've seen some stupid things.
Actually the meaning of those dots was pretty much "really?"
Also, I would like to know how your life has been financially. What kind of gadgets do you have in your house? Ever had money problems at all, and I mean real money problems, not just being late on a payment for your mortgage for your 400k home.
Nice assumption that I'm wealthy. I'm not. I live in Poland and for the last year and a half we barely have any money left after paying all the bills/food/etc. And in this situation luxurious things are pretty much the last thing I'd save money for.
[editline]24th November 2012[/editline]
And for sure I wouldn't risk bodily harm to myself or other people because I want 2 phones, xbox or whatever.

Oh, you've had some money issues for a year and a half? But you still have a nice computer and I'd bet you have multiple TVs and probably a cell phone.

Your sarcastic "really?" just proves my assumption, since, to me, when I picture somebody going "ugh.. really?" it sounds like they're disgusted to me.
And this is what i picture their face looking like

Passive aggressive disgust fits your comment perfectly.

[editline]24th November 2012[/editline]
Uh yeah, triple periods of disgust is a reasonable phrase to describe what I'd picture as you putting on a face of disgust while thinking "how dare a poor person save up to get something nice!"
You are pretty pathetic, the lowest you can go is going off assumptions and you have hit that low.

Stop with those stupid assumptions. My point never was and never will be "how dare a poor person save up to get something nice!". You've made that up in your head because of those assumptions.
I'm saying that poor people have better things to spend their money on than 50' inch tvs.
Why, when that's exactly what the "..." implies, that he's disgusted that a poor person would save up for a nice tv instead of spending it on something else.
His "really?" is a one word summary of it.. "really? you're going to spend that money on a 50 inch TV? Ugh.."

Then why are you acting so disgusted/bothered by the idea that they're saving up to get said TVs?
You say my claim that you are bothered by the idea of poor people saving up to get a nice TV is wrong
You've said so yourself that you don't like them doing it.
My assumption isn't wrong at all
And you still have not told me why you think they shouldn't buy the TVs.

I have no fucking idea where you are getting this from that I'm acting disgusted. I'm going "Poor people saving for 50 inch TV? Really? Like that's the first thing poor people will save money for." and you're acting all like I hate the idea that poor people would do that. I don't. People can do whatever the fuck they want.

In every post, you say quite clearly you don't like poor people spending their money on 50" tvs and that they should spend it on something else.
Lol Americans.
Hey, we aren't all like this, please don't generalize.

Nobody except you thinks that though. It's just in your head due to your stupid assumptions.
Says the guy who's youtube channel has footage of him playing assassins creed and a multitude of other games just fine.
That's because I saved up to make this computer.
Let me say that again. Poor people and 50' inch tv...
You have barely any money for bills and food and you're gonna save money for 50' inch tv? Seriously? Might as well start saving for lambo...
Making a mockery of the idea of poor people buying a 50" tv.
Poor people saving for 50' inch tv...
Implying they shouldn't or that they're somehow dumb for doing so.
Im sorry but if you're poor there are more important things to spend on your money on like food, clothes, and bills. Not a huge ass TV that'll end up being obsolete in a couple years. Honestly I'd be fine with a simple tube TV if I were poor, as long as I had a TV that worked. The necessities are important when you're poor, not the stuff you want but can't really afford.
Implying they shouldn't or that they're somehow dumb for doing so.
Dude, if they've only got a $50 income by the end of the month it is dumb to buy a HD tv. Not only will you need to pay for it to be installed but you'll need to pay for the expensive as fuck cable plan which would leave them with no money at the end of the month.

You have to have it installed? I'm pretty sure you just snap the stand on, plop it on a flat object, plug it in, plug in the video source, and enjoy.
I can't speak for all other poor people but I do not have cable or regular phone service, I use skype, and for my TV a Roku box with Netflix and Hulu subscription.
Implying they shouldn't or that they're somehow dumb for doing so.
Yes that's exactly what your opinion of the post is.
HOWEVER... (and I don't know the truth) It looks to me like he's just expressing confusion with the decision. Not being able to understand someone's actions =/= condemning those actions.
I certainly wouldn't be saving up for a huge tv if I was in a bad financial position.

Well like I said, we buy the food, and pay the bills, and put away extra money for the holidays. My mother usually is able to save up $200 or so by the time the next holiday season has arrived.
We have the right to have some nice things if we save up for it.
I certainly wouldn't be saving up for a huge tv if I was in a bad financial position.
I'm just curious, but what would you save up, if not a TV or some other desirable object?
I'm just curious, but what would you save up, if not a TV or some other desirable object?
Right now? A DSLR in the lower price bracket. Nothing else is currently tickling my fancy. If we're still talking about me in the shoes of someone who is just scraping by, then I would be more focused on getting out of that position than buying recreational items.
Maybe it's different when you start life comfortable and then fall into financial trouble.
But for me and many people who were born into poverty and lived their whole lives in poverty, it feel different.
When society says, "Look at these fancy TVs/phones/games/computers/shoes/dresses/jewelry, look at the happy, wealthy, beautiful smiling people using them, how lucky they must be to not be poor like you, too bad you can't have such nice things".
And that's not even including the advertisements. That's just describing friends, classmates, teachers, people on a bus, somebody driving buy, even somebody just walking by with nice shoes. It's depressing as hell.
It creates a powerful desire to have such things, which is why some very very poor people even go as far as stealing them.

You can be focused on getting out of the hole and still save up and buy fancy things now and then.
Well I don't know what it's like to not be in a hole, but does it mean you aren't allowed to buy things?
I'm pretty sure you don't have to spend money to apply for a job.

Trust me, you don't want to end up being like those people though, you don't need all that crap to be happy.
Trust me, you don't want to end up being like those people though, you don't need all that crap to be happy.
True, you don't need it all. But it does help mentally. Even the illusion of higher quality of living provides an emotional boost. It kind of sucks when you really have nothing nice at all.
A bigger TV could allow you to have friends over to enjoy a movie or game more comfortably.
An up to date computer, you should be able to picture all the possibilities that brings you. Socially and entertainment wise.
Same with a phone that isn't wired to your home. Doubly so if it's a smartphone.
Don't forget all the clothing sales. Looking nice is a HUGE boost in confidence and confidence is the gateway to happiness.
Even the process of buying and owning these items makes you feel a little less poor.
I work at the biggest Walmart Super-center in Canada. And our Black Friday wasn't even close to how fucking nuts that Walmart got.

I didn't say anything about being unable or not allowed to buy the fun stuff. You're inferring when nothing was implied.
My point was that I wouldn't be thinking about it, my mind and day would be almost entirely focused on ditching the situation.
Please note the importance of all words referring to me, myself, and I in these posts. I was not speaking for anyone or trying to tell them how to live their life.
Lol dude, no way is a 50 incher sitting on a stand. That shit needs to be wall mounted.
You're funny.
Reminds me of when a brazilian store decided to do massive discounts and... well...

That's just sad to watch.
[editline]24th November 2012[/editline]
And funny too.
Making a mockery of the idea of poor people buying a 50" tv.
It's mockery only in your head. All I did was say that poor people have better things to spend money on than bigass TVs.
Implying they shouldn't or that they're somehow dumb for doing so.
Well yeah, if you'll have to wear shit clothes and eat junk food just so you can buy a bigass TV that you don't need, it's dumb. Sacrificing things you actually need to buy things you don't is pretty dumb.
I'm just curious, but what would you save up, if not a TV or some other desirable object?
Right now? A nice jacket, a good pair of durable boots (for work) and home appliance things, you know USEFUL things. And if I'd buy things for entertainment I'd save for things within my price range? Not bigass TVs that I have to spend my whole year's savings on?
When society says, "Look at these fancy TVs/phones/games/computers/shoes/dresses/jewelry, look at the happy, wealthy, beautiful smiling people using them, how lucky they must be to not be poor like you, too bad you can't have such nice things".

If we are making fun of anything in this thread that would be advocating such mentality. Don't you think it's wrong that people say those things?
It seems to me that someone has made fun of you in the past or said something that offended you and now you grew a giant hemorrhoid on the subject and got really sensitive on the matter, assuming that everyone is like those people. Dude seriously, nobody here is saying that poor people can't or shouldn't buy fancy things. I'm just saying they have better things to spend on. Especially if they are barely paying the bills.
That's because I saved up to make this computer.

Be honest, for how long exactly?
