"It's mediocre but that's to be expected"
Anyone who was expecting New Vegas 2 is a fucking idiot, have you people never heard of having realistic expectations?
Is it unrealistic to expect non-shit writing, interesting quests, decent textures, non-static lighting, and at least a bit of quality control from a vast, professional company that definitely doesn't lack budget and manpower?

It's Bethesda. So yes.
I can't tell if you're defending Fallout 4 or insulting it.
I'm saying it's a game that has many problems but acting as though it's some abomination that is an insult to RPGs is childish. Expecting Fallout 4 to be anything more than Fallout 3 2, which is exactly what they advertised it as, was silly and it's not a surprise that people who were expecting New Vegas 2 were disappointed.

There's non-shit writing in Fallout 4. The main quest is much better written than Fallout 3, even if you think the direction they went with it is stupid. At least "I have to find my kidnapped baby!" is a better driving goal than "I have to find my dad who abandoned me to fend for myself for seemingly no reason." and the other characters are less stupid. Also the companions are MUCH better than Fallout 3, and personally I think they come close to the companions of New Vegas, Nick Valentine and MacCready are particular stand outs.
The textures are okay. They're unoptimised definitely, and half the time they don't load but when they do they look fine. There also is dynamic lighting, you mostly find it indoors where it won't tank the framerate but it's there.
I will grant you the extreme overuse of radiant quests and the bugginess. Radiant quests are good for a quick way to make money in these games, not as a core feature. The bugs are pretty bad, but at least the game crashes less than Fallout 3. So that's good.

Fallout 3 didn't cost eighty dollars. A satisfactory game shouldn't cost eighty dollars.
Fallout 3 didn't cost eighty dollars. A satisfactory game shouldn't cost eighty dollars.
Nothing that isn't physical and of life changing relation should cost $80
Hell come to think of it, if my medicine was $80 per package I'd reconsider it too, so why's it okay for a game that's barely functional let alone last-gen on everything?

Because games are luxuries. You have the choice to not buy them.

Lots of games are more expensive now than they were in 2010. I don't see how that's Bethesda's fault or a fault of the game's design. I mean I agree that $80 is too much for a game, but you can just wait for a sale or something.
In response to basically every post by Janus Vesta in this thread:
When someone releases a sequel to a franchise, people, unsurprisingly, expect a sequel to that franchise.
You say "Well, this is a sequel to Fallout 3, not to Fallout New Vegas," but that's missing the point, because Fallout 3 was itself a terrible sequel to the original Fallout games. People wanted a worthy sequel to the Fallout franchise, and Fallout New Vegas proved that it is a possibility.
Bethesda knew that fans of the originals hated their shitty writing, and they knew exactly who they could hire to improve it. They just decided not to. And then surgically removed all the role playing bits from the game to boot.
Where the fuck is everyone getting this 80 dollar pricetag? Are you talking about Canadian dollars? Adjusted, that's about 59 fucking US dollars. In the US it's just 60.

You do realize the writing in Fallout 4 is the best it's ever been in a Bethesda game, right? In fact I'd say it's somewhere between mediocre and good.

That's hilarious mate.
Hilariously wrong, and irrelevant besides.

Uh, what the fuck are you talking about? Do you even have any proof of this or are you just taking your own fucking opinion as fact.

DID YOU NOT PLAY MORROWIND?
I mean really, that is just flat out wrong.

I used it twice. Twice.
Goddammit you ninjad me
Alright screw it, I'm just going to get out of here. None of you are going to change your minds about Fallout 4 anyways. Not even sure why I decided to get into this mess in the first place.
Uh, what the fuck are you talking about? Do you even have any proof of this or are you just taking your own fucking opinion as fact.
it's funny because you literally just took your own opinion that "It's the best it's ever been in a Bethesda game" as fact.
But I do actually have proof that it's irrelevant, now that you mention it. Because this isn't "Bethesda RPG 14" it's "Fallout 4"

And hell, Oblivion in general. Main quest wasn't great, admittedly, but most of the side quests were excellent.
I used it twice. Twice.
you used it in 5/6 of your sentences in this thread :v:. not trying to attack you or anything though; i just thought it was silly. sorry if you took offense.
Oh right, I forgot to add "since Morrowind"
I'd say Oblivion has much better writing than most of Fallout 4. Shivering Isles especially.

IDK what you're talking about, it all just worked for me

Why does anyone here need to change their mind? Opinions are opinions.
[editline]13th December 2015[/editline]
IDK why, but I don't think Oblivion was as bad as people make it out to be.
Honestly I feel like due to the Skyrim hype everyone just repeated that "its totally better than oblivion yeah totally man"
I think Oblivion hit a sweet spot between being an RPG and something more casual. Fallout 4 did it too, it hit a sweet spot between FPS and RPG. Which is to say it isn't a good RPG, but def. a decent game.
Skyrim and Fallout 3 were the worst Bethesda games in recent years, for me anyway.
I have seen quite a few people say the game is worse "because it's a shooter now", and saying they preferred when it was clunky like in Fallout 3 and New Vegas. I never Bethesda deserve a free pass, in fact I have criticised the actual problems of the game quite harshly. Expecting the game to be something it was never going to be is fucking ridiculous, expecting a game that would surpass New Vegas' writing was stupid. Bethesda have never done anything close to that, to say the story is bad or poorly written is fine but to say "It's not as good as New Vegas" is just unfair. Especially when it's clear the focus of the game was in other areas.
Firstly I think that anyone who dislikes the new game because of the shooter mechanics is in the minority. The majority of people seem to enjoy the new shooter mechanics, but think the game is worse for everything else it's sacrificed.
Secondly, like I said I think Bethesda should be held to the standard Obsidian set when they decided to let them develop the previous game, and it's not about being realistic. I wasn't that disappointed in Fallout 4 and I didn't expect it to be as good as New Vegas, but that doesn't mean that I'm going to let Bethesda off the hook - in other words, just because I expected that it wouldn't live up to New Vegas doesn't mean that it's acceptable for it not to live up to New Vegas. Bethesda deserves the criticism it gets for the quality of the product and the game should be held to the same standard and compared to the quality of all previous games in the series, and especially to the games made since Bethesda acquired the license (Fallout 3 and Fallout New Vegas), regardless of whether or not that is realistic because that's where the bar is set.

Why were you throwing a fit about people not liking what you like in the first place?
I love RPGs and I'm not an elitist shithead who feels the need to crap all over a game for having half decent gameplay. Anyone who was expecting New Vegas 2 is a fucking idiot, have you people never heard of having realistic expectations?
I'm sorry, but if a sequel is not going to be better than the previous incarnations, why make a sequel?

I mean, yeah that's the obvious answer but not holding a company accountable because 'realistic' expectations is really stupid.
If Bethesda lets Obsidian take another shot at the series all sins will be forgiven.
