Name one.
Machines can only do what they've been told to do. Even a "self-modifying program" - they can only change themselves in ways they've been told. Thus they're inherently finite. Machines do not understand their stimulus. They run it through a set of instructions and produce a suitable response. Humans innately understand it, so they can adapt it. The only way machines can "think" is by programming pretty much every possible situation. Which of course, is not true thinking, because humans can do that without being told how.
what happens to evolution with immortality?
Who needs evolution when you have self-improvement?

We have free will and are captains of our destinies and have full control of our minds :downs:

Silicon-based stuff cannot think. Don't twist my words. [editline]7th May 2011[/editline] Humans are aware, machines are not. That's pretty much it.

I could care less how old I get I just don't want to age past 30 and start getting all old and wrinkly.

[editline]7th May 2011[/editline] Humans are aware, machines are not. That's pretty much it.
And what makes humans so special that machines can't replicate? Our brains are still computers. That they are not made of silicon is irrelevant.
please point me to the nearest philosophical computer, then we'll talk
please point me to the nearest philosophical computer, then we'll talk
The fuck does that even supposed to mean? Just because there aren't any right now does not mean there wont be any in the future. I'm sure A.I. will one day become self-aware.
please point me to the nearest philosophical computer, then we'll talk
Failure to create AI in the past surely means it will never be done right guise?
Humans are aware, machines are not. That's pretty much it.
You mean they aren't right now, they're not.
And what makes humans so special that machines can't replicate? Our brains are still computers. That they are not made of silicon is irrelevant.
I can't answer that directly. However, looking at how computing is evolving now: can you see any sign that it will ever be able to think? Taking into account exponential growth of computational power. The thing is, computers must always be told what the parameters are. Humans can work it out for themselves. Of course, when machines are told what the parameters are, they can work much better (although still not always as well as humans). But they can never work out the parameters for themselves. [editline]7th May 2011[/editline] Also, don't say "oh but that's just taking it nowadays, look at how fast silicon-based tech is advancing, they will eventually be able to become self-aware etc if we have enough time". They lack the qualitative ability to think.

If you mean understanding input from the outside, well, a computer can do that, it's just that humans come with the operating system and computers have to be built by humans.

The 'qualitative ability to think' comes implemented in the brain, right there, out of the box.
i would like to live forever where can i sign up to become a vampire
Failure to create AI in the past surely means it will never be done right guise?
you asked us to name one thing machines can't do that humans can, and now you're butthurt because I found an answer can you even show me any progress on creating self-aware AI? I've never heard of it being even remotely done outside of Star Wars and Halo
What do you mean with 'parameters'? If it's the brain's 'operating system', then that is evolved: It it not 'figured out'. If you wanted a machine to work out the best way to go about it, you'd pretty much have to tell it how to actually do anything other than number-crunch. With a human, telling them is faster, but they can still work it out for themselves.

who are you miles dyson? quit messin with my merges
let's not create self aware ai though we don't want a skynet on our hands
or any robots getting their hands on a deadly nuerotoxin

It's not invented by it's current user. It's the result of evolution.
I said 'machines'. Not 'current machines' or 'computers'. Mad much?
lol I'm so mad how do you know there'll be sentient computers in the future? I can say "I fucking DARE you to tell me humans don't have telekinetic powers!" and then you can say "but they don't have telekinetic powers!" and then I'll say "I said 'humans.' Not 'current humans'. umad????? :smug::smug::smug::smug:" and then I'd be thinking just like you do
Too all the arguments regarding evolution, wouldn't never-growing-old be the ultimate goal of evolution?
i would like to live forever where can i sign up to become a vampire
suit yourself if you want to sparkle in the sun i'll become a zombie and consume people's memories and live forever
Oh, also, that argument about "oh we haven't done it yet, that doesn't mean you can say it can't be done" is flawed. Look at the trend. Machines have not become any closer to self-awareness or thinking or otherwise. All that's happened is they're able to compute more possible solutions - which of course, have already been realized by humans.
