You don't think more computing power is closer to sentience?
let's not create self aware ai though
we don't want a skynet on our hands
orrrrr you could make it and not plug it into the fucking internet and nuclear missiles and B-2s
just a thought
You don't think more computing power is closer to sentience?
No, it's not. Attach all the supercomputers in the world together and they will never, ever come up with anything unless you tell them how.
orrrrr you could make it and not plug it into the fucking internet and nuclear missiles and B-2s

but then what if it becomes so smart it develops telekenesis and it can take over human minds and have human spy slaves that can do whatever it cant?
I didn't mean that as a jab at you Rusty it's just a general thing that people say and it pisses me off, even if you were joking (which I thought you were)
orrrrr you could make it and not plug it into the fucking internet and nuclear missiles and B-2s
but then what if it becomes so smart it develops telekenesis and it can take over human minds and have human spy slaves that can do whatever it cant?
Well sure, then you're fucked I guess
No, it's not. Attach all the supercomputers in the world together and they will never, ever come up with anything unless you tell them how.
Oooh, idk. You can always program in every scenario that could ever be experienced by a computer, and there are ways for computers to learn and build of things that happen.
Who say's it'd go crazy?
Exactly, we're all assuming the computer is gonna go insane anyway when there's no evidence for it
Exactly, we're all assuming the computer is gonna go insane anyway when there's no evidence for it
If computers run off logic, what about the logic that "humans are a danger to themselves, so we must imprison them" type of logic like in I, Robot?

Human intelligence is already embedded in the human mind and is the result of millions of years of natural and sexual selection computers are a blank slate that after filled with the correct patterns will be able to think just like us human intelligence is already embedded in the human mind and is the result of millions of years of natural and sexual selection computers are a blank slate that after filled with the correct patterns will be able to think just like us human intelligence is already embedded in the human mind and is the result of millions of years of natural and sexual selection computers are a blank slate that after filled with the correct patterns will be able to think just like us human intelligence is already embedded in the human mind and is the result of millions of years of natural and sexual selection computers are a blank slate that after filled with the correct patterns will be able to think just like us.

That's very much true. But that's not intelligence.

Cool.
" blank slate that after filled with the correct patterns will be able to think just like us" - i.e. told what to do. Humans were never told what to do.
Machines are incapable of truly learning. Again, don't play that bullshit argument of "just 'cos we can't do it now doesn't mean we'll never be able to do it" because machines are little closer to being self-aware than when they were able to compute.
That's very much true. But that's not intelligence.
the ability to comprehend; to understand and profit from experience
I kind of disagree, but it probably wouldn't be sentient i guess
Humans were never told what to do.
Because we :pcgaming: EVOLVED :pcgaming: to know what to do.

great, now answer my post

Doesn't mean that you have to start from scratch to be intelligent. Babies form with brains with functions already in there, like beating hearts; almost the same principle
Because we :pcgaming: EVOLVED :pcgaming: to know what to do.
and we were programmed via evolution to tell us "alright, now start minting coin money, and make ships to travel on that ocean, and OH! see that land over there? go round up all the black people and sell them as slaves! haha", right?
wrong
were you told to come to facepunch by your DNA? were you told to think the way you do because of that slight mutation your great great great great great grandfather got?
Because we :pcgaming: EVOLVED :pcgaming: to know what to do.
Eudoxia, you've done nothing but complain about my argument. Can you sincerely tell me how you honestly think a computer could ever become self-aware? And programming it to say "I know I'm a computer" does not count. Neither does programming it for every single situation and giving it massive computational power.
maybe eudoxia is a semi-sentient computer and it just realized how its logic was flawed and malfunctioned and self-destructed
Eudoxia, you've done nothing but complain about my argument. Can you sincerely tell me how you honestly think a computer could ever become self-aware? You either run a simulation of all the neurons and glia, complete with suffusion and details, or abstract human consciousness into rules and routines and processes and such, which you can then run in a computer.
A more radical alternative is to just go right ahead and simulate evolution in a virtual world.

No, evolution programmed our mind models. Anything after our birth was causality.
a simulation of the human brain is a simulation though, it would still have to be coded
even then I doubt it would work
Eudoxia, i hold you in high regards due to your excellent threads on science and technology. However, on the subject on human conciousness science must really take a back seat. What makes a human tick, why i see what i see and feel what i feel is a philosophical discussion, not one of pure science.

But the brain is still a physical object :saddowns:
lol I'm so mad
how do you know there'll be sentient computers in the future? I can say "I fucking DARE you to tell me humans don't have telekinetic powers!" and then you can say "but they don't have telekinetic powers!" and then I'll say "I said 'humans.' Not 'current humans'. umad????? :smug::smug::smug::smug:" and then I'd be thinking just like you do
this one now
this one now
Because telekinesis is pseudoscience?
asking me to prove that computers will never be sentient is like me asking you to prove that humans will never have telekinesis or esp or whatever else kind of stupid crazy shit people have come up with

Thank you for confirming you're just a dumb troll.
that's a cute little way to completely ignore all of my legitimate arguments because you can't rebuke them :3:
Life began with a collection of chemicals, raw chance had them react in such a way that a basic life form was formed, infact life was probably formed many times, but was flawed and could not reproduce itself.
Each generation of that life wasnt a perfect copy, some of the flaws were detrimental and some where benificial. If you leave a simulation going for long enough on a computer, I really do think it could end up with a basic virtual life form.
except if you get a corrupted file you're just completely boned, windows xp wouldn't magically turn into vista just because you kicked your hard drive
[editline]7th May 2011[/editline]
Okay. You must be trolling.
ha, didn't even notice this one
could you just not be assed to find any evidence of self-aware AI progress or did you just realize how dumb you sounded?
