Starting My Own Clothing Brand in the UK V2: Veil Edition

vecoil isn't a half bad sounding name
Maybe you should consider making a thread in the web development section, at the very least from a quick brain storm I feel like making a basic clothing website wouldn't present a great amount of difficulty to any web developer with a little relevant experience and I'm sure you'd be able to find a budding developer or student suitable for the task who would do it purely for the experience and the chances at putting it on a CV.
I'd actually offer to do it myself but I'm working full time in web development right now and working on a website for my final year uni project in my spare time
Yeah. Do it for the exposure.

I would have imagined the typesetting wayyy differently. Like, all caps sans serif minimalist with subtler tones in monochrome or something. That looks really cheap

Just something I knocked up in photoshop I quite like it. The typeface I always imagined was going to be quite swirly like that. I think clothing brand logos need to be kept as simple as possible really. You're welcome to have a go at your own though.
When I hear "Veil" as a clothing brand I imagine pretty exclusive high quality limited run kind of stuff, kinda edgy
Maybe even goth ninja territory, it's that sort of name
And then paired with that crappy cursive type that looks like it should spell out Mark's and Spencer's Budgetwear for Older Ladies or something
Just an observation, really seems at odds with the vibe "Veil" gives off
have to say i completely agree with mako here. i get that veil gives off a slightly floaty, airy feeling but it's completely against what you've explained the brand to be
it needs to be clean, minimal and concise, which (currently) pretty much means quite hipstery, or at least those are the best examples i can find easily

Hmm yeah I see what you mean Autumn, good examples.
Exactly what I said previously to him. Veil sounds more like a premium dress maker or something.
It's always been my dream to make a clothing brand I was actually going to call mine Ward due to it being my last name and I wanted my families last name to forever exist. I wanted it to be a brand based around today's hip-hop and maybe have a dark/artsy feel to it, but I don't think it's a possibility with my current financial situation. It's cool seeing your chasing your dream and I think you can really do it if you put your mind to it. Seems like you have the resources you need already and the correct mindset for starting your own clothing brand/company.

But you can do anything, you just have to believe in yourself***
Got the first drafts of the Veil logo back from the designer. I like most of them but I don't think he's quite got the feel right yet. They feel very surf/skate brand to me personally.

Yeah they're very... outdoors-y.
1 - yes
2 - bit weird
3 - huh?
4 - maybe
5 - vans logo
6 - half life/valve/something along those lines logo

i agree, 1 is a yes.
yeah 1 is the best out of those easily
although the contrast between the curviness of the 've' and the edginess of the 'il' is a bit weird.

but it still works.
To be fair to the guy, I didn't give him much to go on so it's definitely my fault they are all very different, but I'm definitely liking no.1 with the rest of you guys.
So I will mention that when I send back the revisions to him.
I think the first one is ok too but with the description and photos you gave on the first thread I was totally expecting something like what Autumn posted in the last page, like really hipster. The logos on the other hand feel like they belong to a surf/skate brand

Yeah totally, I've sent all of this back in the feedback email. We'll see what comes back next.
also, a quick mockup based on the first one. I tried making the connection between the V and the E go on to the I and L

then of course, all rounded courners to make it look softer, or hard edges

that's super hard to read though
yeah the IL part may be a bit hard, still thinking of a solution for it, but that was what I came up with on the spot
sorry, not keen on that at all. i kinda get the idea but the aesthetics (even at this point) don't do it for me
[editline]14th August 2013[/editline]
it also looks fairly phallic but that might just be me
This page is gold. http://www.urbanindustry.co.uk/brands-a-z.asp
can you post some of the logos that you like, as an example?

Boy London is uber hipster as well, and I definitely like their logo. They are a prime example of a brand which has thrived by creating something incredibly basic, but memorable enough that they can just slap it on a t shirt and make millions.
I also like what Autumn posted on the previous page. Personally I always imagined this logo to be quite "swirly" rather than straight edged, but I've kinda been swayed by the opinions of everyone in this thread, and by my friends. I'm not implying that's a bad thing, I think there's some great talent on this forum and I have faith in the opinions of most of you.

Here is my bullet pointed feedback to the designer, anything anyone would add?
- The first logo I can see would work great on clothing which is what we want, but just not quite there yet in terms of look and feel.
- The logos (including no.1) feel very surf/skate brand, I’m not sure why it feels that way, but it does to the team and I. This isn’t what we were going for.
- We’re looking for a very exclusive, very “hipster” clothing brand feel.
- None of the logos so far really stand out as a memorable brand so far.

I worked for years towards this, and now it's finally becoming a reality. Slaved at university and worked in my first job for 6 months for no money at all. All my savings are going into this because it's something I think I'd love to do and it's something I'm passionate about.
If you want anything in life, you have to work towards it (the case for most people anyway). Get a job / mow peoples lawn / clean cars / work fucking hard and you will be able to do something like this too. I look forward to considering you my competition one day. :)
i dont really think you can say that much more because his perspective of your brand was something else. Maybe if he understands a bit more about Veil, hell get the feel and everything
Some ideas (disregard the text under the logo, was just to suggest placement of whatever text you wanted.
