hopefully starpluck wont notice this thread..
To late sucker
Jews get royally rammed up the arse since the dawn of time, after WW2 (where they hands down got the biggest shafting that any single group of people have since the inquisition or possibly even black death) Britain is like "hey guys here's somewhere that we colonised where you can be jewish and rule your own lives without risk of oppression, as long as you promise not to persecute anyone else" And so the jews went to Palestine (well, to call it Palestine is a bit of a lie -it's a piece of land that's changed hands more time than prison currency) and were like "great we can go live in our holy land and be free" and then they get there and everyone else around them is like "what the fuck are they doing, the jews need to be wiped off the face of the earth" Obviously, the jews (now Israelis) had enough of that shit (see beginning of post) and decided if they were going to be fucked with, they were going to rip the eyes out of anyone that tried -not disagreeable. Quite a few wars have followed. And any non-israelis living in the area get totally bent over by the security arrangements that protect Israelis On the other side of the coin, the 'Palestinians' (formerly Jordanians and Egyptians at that time) had been occupied by the British for about 30 years -obviously not a great situation to be in. All of a sudden, the Brits start to move all of these displaced jews in to their homeland. Their land! Obviously they weren't that amused -these jews were pretty serious about fucking over anyone that didn't agree with their way, and they even had the audacity to stake their claim on the holy town of Jerusalem (a holy land in many religions, of course) On the whole the situation is basically the result of late colonialism, shitty compromise and general feelings of hatred from all sides. It is proof that even if religion can bring together nations, there will always be people, and people do a pretty good job of messing up anything. (Also, as an aside: The Israeli nuclear policy is something of an enigma. Their official line is to not comment on the state of their nuclear capabilities -while this seems to suggest they probably do have some weapons, there's little information available as to any concrete numbers. This is slightly scary because their other main nuclear policy is that if they end up in another major war where all hope is lost and they're sitting on the edge of another holocaust style persecution, they're willing to watch their little part of the world burn to save themselves. Scary stuff -if they have enough nukes to do it) And yet more, why the Americans support the Israelis: ->Stable democracy in a volatile region ->Lots of jews in America ->Lots of Israel sympathisers (especially hard line christians) ->Cultural affinity (ie. people from Israel coming to US like Natalie Portman) ->Well organised lobbying in Washington The british govt. has generally washed its hands of the problem (and tries to avoid messing in those sorts of affairs since the Suez crisis) but holds a centrist standpoint on the manner -would probably vote yes on any UN mandates establishing Palestine as a state, however- as it would likely be beneficial to the peace process.
Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Georgia, etc. There's actually a lot of countries that want the U.S. there to keep bigger, badder countries in the region from taking them over.
Whoa, I thought Georgia was in the Caucasus. When did they decide to move to the Middle East?
