I object to the historical erasure of the furry subforum
I don't, that section and weirdest boner threads deserve to be forgotten.

Just blame me for that.
The hope is that while the old membership probably won’t like them much and a lot of them will drop out, we’ll be able to innovate and improve them over time and turn them into a decent, modern forum.
Aww, don't worry you won't get rid of me that easily. Probably. Hopefully.
...I did stay away at some point for a few years for some reason or another...
But that had nothing to do with the forum design!
A nice blast from the past though, thanks.
Making some TF2 based mods for the small Facewound section back in 2008 made me learn to use (a pirated version of) Photoshop. 6 years after that I got my first job as a university student with a marketing department, where using Photoshop was a big part of that.
That was a fun forum section, shame most of the mods were also uploaded on Megaupload :~(

Read Threads needs to come back in some form, there's no way I'll remember to subscribe to every thread that interests me even just a little, which in turn will result in me forgetting about it completely, especially if it's in a subforum I don't visit often
My interpretation of garry's posts on it is that read goes against his philosophy of how users should be interacting (or utilising) a forum. I can see this being true for some users, Even myself because I pretty much use it exclusively because I don't have to navigate to each subforum.
But as it's also a compilation of all recent threads being posted in and created, I skip the middleman and see new threads as they're made. It saves a lot of time instead of digging around the site to keep on top of new interesting threads.
anything else is me opening a forum out of sheer boredum, or I click it from the frontpage for any reason
Oh man, I remember the day a whole bunch of subforums were wiped.
That was not a fun day.
I still remember
"get to the bunker."
:v:
And wasn't there a ban where someone was talking about a map and said "could you make it easier to get to the bunker?" and he got banned for that.

I often snigger at memories like these.

I was once autobanned in the roleplay subforum for telling people to get to the bunker in a post-apocalypse RP. I didn't contest the ban.
Also, I'll never forget cleaver being marked as wrong by smartness but "kleaver" was seen as correct.
What a long, strange trip it's been.

You're here forever
Bulletin style forums/message boards offer something really unique that I don't think can be replaced, and that's why I've gravitated towards them for so long. 2/4chan style image boards, Reddit, and now Discord have all put major dents in their popularity, but I think that there's a more firm permanence to forums and the conversations that you can have there that's unique and worth experiencing. They're slightly more cumbersome, but allow for a stronger foundation for meaningful dialogue and lasting interactions in the how you can have longer and more fleshed out conversations in multiple threads at once.
They allow you to learn more about other users, learn more about yourself, change the way you think, expose yourself to new ideas without the fast paced sensationalist riff-raff and clamor of lighter alternatives, and really form a well-rounded and tight-knit community.
With alternatives like GAF going up in smoke, Facepunch is really starting to become one of the last of a dying breed. It offers an experience like no other due to its incredibly unique and diverse userbase and I'll be sad to see it go someday. Newpunch, due to no real fault of its own, might be what pushes me away, but at the end of the day I've met so many wonderful people and great friends here that this place and its community will always stick with me in one way or another. Everyone who's had a part in making stuff like that happen, and that means not only Garry and the team but also all of the users as well, should be proud of that. Bringing people together is awesome.
Facepunch was effectively the place where I 'grew up' on the internet. I pretty much agree with everything Bird said. Looking back, I am so happy that most of my post history is gone. Even the small bit that remains makes me slightly uncomfortable. I don't really know if I can consider myself a part of the community here anymore. Found other sites, other interests, etc. But no matter where else I go, Facepunch will always be special to me.
I guess I'm posting now to thank all of you people for being there as I grew up, both literally and in the internet sense. I'm happy and thankful for all of the people I've interacted with, and the experiences I've had.
So, yeah, thanks.
Facepunch has been my homepage for almost 11 years. Here's to another 11 (hopefully)
We’ve wanted to move away from vBulletin since about a week after I installed it.
here's the original source for the image by the way, in case you want to see more of the artist's work: https://www.pixiv.net/member_illust.php?mode=medium&illust_id=59457656
I really like how the ratings evolved over time, it's probably one of the best things about this site, because I can still (slightly) contribute to a discussion without having to actually post, by giving agrees and winners to people who've made my arguments for me, and boxes for anyone I disagree with. I also always liked this emote: :v:
Damn I miss the who's online section. Was always fun to look at during a happening.
