If we don't like the new forums we can always complain about them on proboards. Also my 10 year forum anniversary is in like 3 days, woo me I guess. I've always been such an active poster.
When ever I need to depress myself all i gotta do is remember some users were not even born when I signed up here.
the only days where i haven't visited facepunch since i registered are days where i havent been on my pc at all. it's sad to say really, but i couldn't imagine what my life would be like without this website. i'd probably get a lot more work done.
*sniggers*
I wonder if War_man333 remembers any of that.
33,443 archived threads, you can sort by date and check out a bunch of posts from '05. Makes me feel old remembering people who haven't logged in for 12 years https://web.archive.org/web/*/http://forums.facepunchstudios.com/showthread.php?t=* This is just sad [editline]7th January 2018[/editline] Holy shit it's the pivot thread. No idea how I remember some of these, this was a little before I registered [t]https://i.imgur.com/PvEmXUl.png[/t] Classic
I had an old account known by 'Ubertrooper' way back in 2005 but switched to this one for reasons I can't precisely remember. I think it was because of a ban combined with my original Steam account receiving a VAC ban. Anyway, been here for 13 years and joined when I was 9 (close to 10?) years old. No real intent on moving away unless it completely topples over. :cat:
I love you all, I have such huge history on this site. The programming subforum got me to start programming as a hobby like 8 years ago, and now I'm a fulltime software engineer. Without facepunch I would never have picked up programming. I used to be an active programming and durgz discussion poster, but nowadays I just lurk. Nothing can replace this amazing community and I sincerely hope newpunch isn't the death of this community. I think we will survive, but I can't help being a little concerned because I fucking love this community.
IMHO we'll probably lose a large chunk of users just because people don't like change and there's nothing really bringing people into the forum. It's mostly just long-time users at this point. As a small sidenote to this, our active users has dropped by over 30,000 people in the past few years and we're at one of the most inactive points in Facepunch's history. That said I don't see FP dying off any time soon just because of how massive it is. But I also wouldn't be surprised to see this dip in population become even larger after the move.
the inactivity is definitely noticeable, the forum feels generally slower than it was before my banme
Killing off sections for the megathreads I still think was the nail in the coffin in the long run. Personally can't wait for the final move over and the more relaxed attitude to thread creation that the new design promotes. If the whole custom forum idea ends up working out again, we could start seeing 2011 like activity with the sub communities again. Just don't let the furry forum revive its self, no one wants to see another "post in here if you just came" thread which topped the section for a fucking year.
How many of those 30k people were from the rust forum though?
None, really. Or at least Rust didn't really significantly impact the forum's active numbers. Facepunch consistently had ~38k-40k active users long before Rust was added to the forum. Then it stayed consistently around the low 40k's for awhile. The big explosion happened between late 2010 and mid 2011 (as Reagy mentioned). The forum population drastically fell off by ~20k people in 2015. Our active population has slowly tapered off in the past two years since then and fallen to half of what it was even in 2015.
The question is, why?
I remember taking a huge break when the dota 2 forum was removed, I felt like a lot of time spent making OC and chatting had disappeared and I felt dissociated with facepunch for a while after seeing a few other regulars disappear.
i think i have stockholm syndrome for this web site
The question is, why?
People being too busy with their lives and moving on, probably (for regular users anyway) I have to wonder how many people will still be here in another ten or so years or if most people would of left by then
I imagine most of us were introduced to fp through gmod, but we still stuck around. Why can't rust players do the same?
https://www.wikipunch.com/Postal_and_The_Rust_Forum Good times edit: This is actually my 11th year on FP, my first account got up to ~2k posts before I got pbanned for shitposting in news threads. That account got unbanned eventually but the yahoo account it was signed up with is LONG gone.
The question is, why?
From what I can gather the major drop can be attributed to two things because the drop happened in the exact timeframe that both of these changes occurred.. The first was, funnily, the change from a two-column format to a single-column format. The second was the ability to view subforums without an account. This one is probably the number one killer honestly. Those two things combined attributed to a decline of about 10-12 thousand active users within a couple of months. Since then the active userbase has been steadily declining.

Back when LMAO pics was in Fast Threads and getting banned means losing access to it.

Facepunch has been part of my daily routine for over 6 years, i just love the mix of childish dumb shit and mature discussion and it helped me to learn english in the long run. I hope the migration brings new life to the forums (and new post of the year contendants :v:)

my oldest account is just a few days away from turning 11 I spent about 3 years of that not really on the forums but since I was 14 FP has been a mainstay most of the time
I remember I came for Garry's Mod, but after my community died and I took a break I still hung around cause of everyone here.

When were the Rust forums moved over to Labpunch? I'd say that probably corresponds with the drop in active users. The forums in the past have experienced growth proportionate to the popularity of the games that FP releases. However when the Rust section was pigeon holed to Labpunch, effectively turning it into an unusable cesspit, I believe that kind of shot the forums in the foot. I anticipate that once all the forums are moved onto Newpunch, we'll start to see growth again as a new generation of users register on the forums and begin to use them. We've always raked people in with games, but got them to stay because of the community. I don't expect it will be any different

By this point the active user count had already dropped by 20k users, so the move largely had no impact. I do agree the forums significantly benefit from FP games' popularity. I think S&box has the potential to bring in a lot of users. That said the forums have started to stagnate, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed that we'll see the return of more users rather than a loss during the forum migration.
