Refused - The Shape of Punk to Come - 1998
A+
This album truly is the shape of punk to come. The positive yet dissapointing thing about this album is that we will never here a punk album as good as this one.

Slayer - Reign in Blood - 1986
A-
Vibrant energy, not as well produced as some of their albums but I feel this is a great starter album. Give quite a nice boost, some may complain that's it's under 30 minutes but that's the delight of this album.
They haven't done many double albums which is fascinating, I need to see more albums like this.

Another good album, but this time their idiologies and lyrics are a bit foolish as compared with the early albums. But all in all, they still bring some amazing stuff through. I prefer Reign in Blood though.

Imo, they're undisputed masterpiece. It just flows so grandly and the drumming here is beyond comprehension. From front to back, I can't complain. Smoothly produced too, Rick Rubin knows how to bring their sound out.

Undertow - Tool
A-
Misses out on an A+ because of the depressing downward spiral that causes a lot of the more energetic, powerful songs on this album to turn into the more difficult to listen to. Kind of disorienting, but it's still a bloody excellent album. An interesting contrast between their more progressive works of their recent years. Tool rock.

I've heard Hell Awaits. But that was long ago, I should listen to it again some time.
Is their later stuff any good?

No. I'm tired :smugdog:
Hell Awaits or Show No Mercy is Slayer's best IMO. I can't really listen to more than one album at a time, if that.
Their later stuff is pretty safe, that's about as much as I can say really
I've heard Hell Awaits. But that was long ago, I should listen to it again some time.

I don't really like much of their later stuff. Diabolus in Musica is like Slayer's Saint Anger, but the three albums they've released since that are decent. God Hates Us All is pretty good.
I do like St. Anger, even if it's terrible. All artists have off days.

The Flashbulb - Arboreal - 2010
What can I say? This is some really good music, it blends rock, piano, strings, and electronic very well and it produces it's own unique sound. If crack was in aural form, this would be it, because this and Kirlian Selections have been the only things I've been listening to for the past couple days.
A+ and stuff.

I know it's progressive, but it was just too boring for me, there wasn't enough going on through nearly the whole album to really keep me interested, mostly just felt like loops over and over again. A few good tracks though.

Poitishead - Thiewd (if you are from joisey)
yes the old trip-hop legends are back (this album came out in 2008, what am i saying) and this time they threw out the trip-hop shit and remain with some truly frighting songs that range from sped-up trip-hop (Silence) to almost atonal psychedelic rampages (We Carry On) to ukelele songs (Deep Water)
but it always remains deeply unsettling and the voice of singer beth gibbons matches it perfectly with her crystalline vocals

I would probably like this album A LOT more of I didn't hear Untrue first.
Just want to say that rating an album bad doesn't mean I dislike the music. :3:
Maybe you should rate it from a critical point of view and purely from enjoyment then?
Good idea. I'll do that when I'm bothered :3:

Received this today.
A good album in general but a lot of tracks seem forgettable.
I think that the voice's have to much distortion on. It would be okay on one track but not 4 or 5.
My favourite song: Lee Majors Come Again, a fast song with good rhythm with more than the basic drum loop mixed in.
3.5/5

I love unplugged, though there are only few I actually listen to. 6/10 for the Album, but 9/10 for those I am listening to from this Album.

Matthew Dear : Slowdance EP

This is basically remixes of songs from his previous album 'Black City' and an original track that was included in Black City if you bought it from the Ghostly store (or something like that).
I really like some of these remixes. Some might be weaker than others and will be overshadowed by How To Dress Well's remix which was what most people talked about before it was released. They vary in mood and don't sound like the original tracks with new sounds pasted over them.
I'll give it a 7/10
Just a short little treat for fans of Dear and Electronica in general.
Listened through all the Helloween I had last night from front to finish. Was a good 5-6 hours.

Walls of Jericho - 1986
A-
The pure roots of power metal and arguable the first power metal album to ever exist. The term "Melodic Speed Metal" is made more clear as this album blurs the line of how it is associated with power metal - practically all elements but abusive synths are present in this album. It is hard to deny the album's influence, particularly after listening to Blind Guardian's debut which I personally believe is a complete rip off of this album. But on that note, this album is very original, and explosive the whole way through. The album cover is also really awesome. Definate listen for any metal fan.

Keeper of the Seven Keys, Pt. 1 - 1988
A
An incredibly more developed version of walls of jericho - with even more over the top vocals by one of the world's greatest singers - Michael Kiske - the "key" (hurr pun) to unlock the power metal genre. More guitar work similar to neo-classical works with a major tone the majority of the way leads a very happy poppy feel to this metal album and is merely fillerless. The track "Helloween" is a nice epic that carries the charm the entire way through - something hard for a 14 minute track. The drama of the album is also intense and amazing. A must listen for anyone before they die.

Keeper of the Seven Keys, Pt. 2 - 1989
A
The second part always has the mission of following up to the first one, and this one manages. I think one of the most debated issues in power metal history is which one is better. The album is the same but different as the previous one. While carrying the same production (bar some drum tech I think) and focus of genre, the song writing is mostly credited to Michael Weikath as opposed to Kai Hansen who wrote most of the previous album (and Walls of Jericho). Another lack of filler, it's interesting to see arguments based on Weiki vs Kai as the album quality virtually depends on those 2 via song writing being the only difference. A reference I like to make is the solo at the end of the title track - another 13 or so minute track that is merely amazing. Instead of being awesome the whole way through, it gradually changes from a 'good' song to the most amazing climactic moment in the history of power metal. The solo battle at the end is not the Keeper of the Keys versus the Demon, it's Kai Hansen vs Weikath. Too much shit, not enough review. This is also a certain must listen before you die.

Pink Bubbles Go Ape - 1991
B
An underrated gem by Helloween. While people beg to differ on musical terms, I would say it's similar to the previous albums, but replacing the epic adventurous terms for more humerous ones. Instead of caliming the death of Helloween, this album should be treated as the fourth vintage Helloween metal album and should be appreciated rather than ignored. Listen if you like, but I wouldn't recommend it to anyone other than a power metal fan.

Chameleon - 1993
C+
This album is seen as the lead up to the death of helloween. The reasons are intense - Ingo Schwichtenberg was fired for drug abuse (Ingo also claimed the track "Windmill" as "Shitmill") but didn't attempt to return to the band, later increasing dependance on drugs and leading to his suicide in 1995. Kiske was also fired, however agreed on his own terms aswell to leave, and has never spoken positively about Helloween or the general metal scene since - something I like to refer as 'taking his ball and going home'. The track listing is complete of songs trying to be too artistic then they actually are (credit to CoolCorky for that term), and end up sounding like a bunch of rejected filler ballads and songs from the previous album(s). The track however is complimented by the last 2 tracks which are A+ songs, but do not make up for the boring tracks before hand (bar "Giants", also a nice track). The album had potential, but felt too controlled by Kiske and didn't feel like a Helloween album at all. It was hard to give this album even a B, so I didn't. Listen if you're a die hard fan of them, but you probably have already and felt the same about this album. This album is a good example of 'wrong place at the wrong time'.

Master of the Rings - 1994
B
Referred to as the 'comeback' album, Master of the Rings sure does bring the vintage kick back up from the Walls of Jericho album, including the new vocalist - more harsh raspy than epic vocals, and a speed metal element amplified over the power metal over the Keeper albums - which are still slighty present. It is a good album, but doesn't feel like Helloween until you hear all the albums after it and treat the vocals as Helloween vocals. Listen to it if you're a metal fan.
