The stripped down version of ''Jack-ass'' which is named ''Strange Invitation'' gives the listener a sample of the stripped down sound used in Beck's later album ''Sea Change''. This proves how diverse Beck's sound can be, from drum machines and samples to a guitar.
My favourite album. Would you say it's worth a second purchase for all the extra content? The Aphex Twin remix of Devil's Haircut also intrigues and excites me, being a big Aphex fan. Homework - Daft Punk Fucking brilliant. Simplistic, classic house that's catchy, relaxing and very '90s. Wonderful! 10/10
9.8/10 Really awesome, the grooves especially. I am not giving it a 10/10 because 45 minutes of this is not enough of this awesomeness.
ProjeKct One - Live at the Jazz Cafe - 1999 B It's a side of project of King Crimson. Not many KC fans know that it is actually just King Crimson here doing a live show. I think a couple of the King Crimson "Projekcts" are actually studio albums. This isn't one, but due to it having Bill Bruford on drums as well as the line up at the time of King Crimson... I couldn't pass it by. It's pretty much improvisation and experimentation... nothing too structured. But it is quite enjoyable, these are reknowned musicians so you won't hear them "battling" to see who get's the best rhythm going. It is the only ProjeKct album I've listened to so far, but I enjoy it a lot. Being an avid listener of the main band, these side albums are intriguing and enjoyable.

I'll definitely be buying this pretty soon, now. Thanks alot! My old copy of Odelay could use an update anyway, scratches and tears everywhere. :v:
James Blake - James Blake - 2011 A- First proper dubstep record I've heard in a while.. and this is a keeper. This is something to like, it's very much a minimal, ambient, art pop sounding record rather than a straight up dubstep. I'm not too familier as I should be with the genre, but that is how I interpreted it. So I guess it's not too alien to what I'm used to. It's not so much experimental, but there are styles incorporated that tell me he knows the vibe of "soul" to give off while keeping minimal. It's not a lengthy piece like I would have expected, and there is a consistency within the style of the songs that keeps you wanted to hear more. It sounds as if he is in his own world here, but not much like a "Dream Pop" record or somewhat... this is a bit more honed in and to the point. I'm thrilled he got some success with it in the UK, artful pop doesn't really hit the charts that much over here. Will have to give it another listen or two to get a full idea of it, but on my first listen... I really enjoyed where he is getting at. His next record will be the stunner though.
I told you he was good AK'z
I told you he was good AK'z
He really is, you should have been a bit more pressing so I could've heard it earlier. :smug:
Band: Deadlock Album: Manifesto Year: 2008 Genre: Melodic Death Metal Rating: 7/10 Generally a great album. I personally am not too fond of the lyrics in some songs (mainly "Fire at will" for it's highly inaccurate portrayal of all hunters (yes, there is a minority of hunters who are like that, but they are hated by everyone, including the majority of all hunters)), but it's still a great album, and some lyrics are very agreeable. As a bonus: The best song of the album. It has guest vocals by Christian "Vocal God" Älvestam!
Burial - Untrue (2007) 9/10 Fantastic album. Dark, moody, ethereal and unlike anything else around. There are no particular standout tracks, you really do have to listen to the album in its entirety to fully appreciate it (preferably on a dark night whilst walking down an empty street bathed in the orange glow of streetlamps)
Bob Dylan - Highway 61 Revisited 2/10 One of the greatest rock albums ever. I love Dylan's lyrics and the way he sings them. I also have to give a lot of credit to the other guys playing all the instruments because they rock. My favourite song on the album has to be the closer, Desolation Row. Usually I hate like 10 minute songs that sound the same all the way through (never got the big deal about Sister Ray), but because of the strange lyrics I'm paying attention all the way through.
Madvillain - Madvillainy 2: The Madlib Remix - 2008 B- It's not much of a followup to "Madvillainy", because this is a remix of that album. However, it is cleanly done and I feel a lot less outlandish than the previous effort. This is not to say "Madvillainy 2" was better.. it's far from it. The first one was so vibrant and playful with it's representation of hip hop that it keeps me drawn in. This one however is more drawn out and easy-listening. The beats aren't as inspired and the usage of the raps aren't as well placed as before. I personally think it should have been put aside as one of those "accompanyment" albums rather than an actual studio effort. If they actually wanted to do that, why not make up something entirely different instead of rehashing something great and then plonking something that is reminiscent of that spark right on top of it. I do still like it, but I'm being as truthful as possible. It's not as addictive as the first, I would even go for the "Madvillainy Instrumentals" album than this one.

8/10 One of the few albums that have truly gained my attention recently. The first 4 songs are so strong that personally for me if they had released this as an EP it'd be perfect. On the latter half of the record the tracks become more experimental yet they retain the charm of the band and are still brilliant. However personally I think the lisp of the frontman, Kip Berman along with the inclusive lyrics seal the deal making this a brilliant sophomore LP.
Funkadelic - Maggot Brain - 1971 A+ I'm not really gonna battle my brain for words on this album. It's an all time classic album, it helped pioneer the movement for soul and funk cultures while still remaining faithful to the psychedelic age that went around during the end of the 60s/beginning of 70s era. We had Marvin Gaye's What's Going On, which we all know to be a landmark... however that album is very much a Psychedelic Soul album, despite many thinking of it as a true grooveable album. So in that sense, something like that has been wrongly read into... but this gives it to you straight up. It's not your average light-hearted soul/funk piece, like something from Shuggie Otis or Prince. This is a bit freakier, and I sometimes get confused how some "soul funkers" got into this style. I would have thought this would only come from crack pot jazz fusionists, but this is really interesting. Need more funkadelic :smug:
[img_thumb]http://img685.imageshack.us/img685/4779/covervce.jpg[/img_thumb] Fang Island Fang Island 5 Multi-cultural Ducks/5 Math Rock elements mixed with Post Rock, my two favorite genres mixed in to one magnificent blend. With the wacky time signatures and note blends of Math, and with some minor drawn out progressions, it sounds magnificent. I listened to the entire thing, pumped, ready. Probably the best I have heard in a while, though I have yet to listen to the new Decemberists album, and I love me some Decemberists. That will be my next review, but good god, this album is marvelous. Listen to it. Please. [editline]11th April 2011[/editline] Sample:
^ Yessir winrar They most certainly deserve to be the only artist in the "everybody high-fiving each other" genre.

The opening notes alone hooked me to the album quickly, with it's crazed flow, it's sounds like a controlled chaos, and it's beautifully done. I would say the difference between this and "Fang Island" is Giraffes? Giraffes! has a more metal feel to it, as Fang had rock. Both are fantastic, and highly recommended.

David Bowie - Station To Station - 1976 A+ This may well be my all time favourite Bowie record; now that's not solely because it's more funk oriented... okay that's a lie, but I do think it's artful expression is some of his strongest here. Ziggy Stardust may be the most highly recommended album to start off with, but I would steer well clear from that until you know what this guy is about. This is pretty much the masterpiece of his career in terms of pure consistency and artistry. Fair enough, it isn't that experimental and it wouldn't end up being as influential as his Low or Hunky Dory albums. But that isn't the point, what it actually is, is a true cross-over into regions of music which I didn't think he could pull off. They call it "Blue-Eyed Soul"...and that mixed with Funk, is a very risky thing unless you get it completely right. The one thing it didn't need to be is 6 long songs, but I can't complain if it's musically that good.

The whole album has a clear, crisp sound, and a new sheen of consummate professionalism that really gives the songs a big boost. He's been compared to Elvis Costello, but I think Huey has a far much more bitter, cynical sense of humor.

Miles Davis - On The Corner - 1972 A Talking about "crisp, clear sounds of consumate professionalism".. this is On The Corner. Still fresh, still funky, still groovy and its 40 years on. It's a timeless classic, but still reminiscent of those Psychadelic jazz sessions that went on around that time. It isn't so much outlandish as that though, this is more honed in and sensible. Such a classic and will be played by me for years to come :3:
Crowbar - Sever the Wicked Hand Good sludge metal. Thick riffs that will get stuck in your head easily. But may not be everybody's thing. 8.5/10
This is Happening - LCD Soundsystem 8/10 ''This is Happening'' is the last album from LCD Soundsystem, the album sends them out with a bang straight from ''Dance Yrself Clean'' to ''Home''. The listener is reminded about what LCD Soundsystem are about, energetic dance music in the song ''Drunk Girls'' while ''Pow Pow'' is reminscent of ''Losing My Edge'' from LCD's debut album. The album would've recieved a higher rating from me if it wasn't for ''Somebody's Calling Me'' a song that doesn't seem to fit in with the rest of the album.
