Really good thrash album. It sounds a lot like GWAR in the comedic sense of the lyrics. It's not a serious band but the tunes are really good. I found it to be really enjoyable.

I actually regard Disc 1 of Hullabaloo soundtrack to be Muse's best collection of songs, especially compared to the overproduced tripe that is The Resistance.
Highlights:
Forced In: A fantastic journey into ambience/prog, which is rare from a band such as Muse.
Yes Please: Simple but effective, its heavy riff is difficult to withstand but carries an interesting and unique idea, and I regard its oppressive repetition as an entirely intentional mood.
Map of Your Head: Simply by far and away the best song Muse have ever written, I know many would disagree, but the riff is just a stroke of genius, and is one of Muse's most unique songs overall.
Shine: A beatifully atmospheric piece, its use of ambience and natural sound effects is once again wonderfully unexplored territory for this band.
Ashamed: This is a B-side, and it manages to be more effective than a majority of Muse's other rock songs. Heavily reminiscent of Sober, most of Matt's live performances end up sounding like this song. In a similar vein to Yes Please, it's quite oppressive, but entirely intentional.
The Gallery: Another highly experimental track, like Forced In. Almost like an instrumental conglomerate of everything Radiohead did up until 2001.
Hyper Chondriac Music: An interesting take on Origin of Symmetry's highlight Hyper Music, I must admit I prefer the original's energy. Muse's Radiohead influences really shine through here. This is basically Exit Music with piano and a different subject matter.
Overall the album enters far better and much more interesting territory than any of their other albums, though it suffers from the inevitable fact that it isn't even a proper album, and the songs don't particularly compliment each other for this reason. I see it more as an interesting collection of side ideas, which are all frankly a lot more interesting than the band's main focus.
5.5/10 as an album, 9.5/10 as a group of songs. It lacks the album integrity of OoS or Showbiz but the ideas here are fantastic. It is slightly depressing to see that the band ignored these gems and went on to deteriorate into listenable, yet uninteresting pop.

I've disregarded Hullabaloo for some reason, I should give it a listen

Pain of Salvation - BE

This is a wonderful public service announcement in how not to do a concept album. I mean, this is really awful. The concept is ridiculously pretentious and convoluted, and feels like it's taken up most of the creative process, with the actual music - which is almost entirely forgettable despite its attempts at being varied - an afterthought. Factor in the pointless and irritating monologues - the pair of voices that are supposed to represent 'Animae' sound like their trying to sell me a course of faith healing - and this may be the worst album I've ever had the displeaure of sitting through.

Yeah definitely prefer vocals in later albums. But Funeral is still absolutely brilliant. Love it.
Also lol 97 new posts. I should check this thread more often. Might post a review of something today, who knows!

Cyanotic - The Medication Generation

It's hard to describe. I would have given it a full 10/10, though the vocals were a bit uniform. Either lots of shouting or lots of mumbling.

Frost* - Milliontown
A-
A very good album, but it fluctuates a bit in terms of quality. Hyperventilate starts out amazingly, then descents into slightly dull noodling, No Me No You is spectacularly good, Snow Man and the Other me are both quite good, Black Light Machine is another very strong song, and finally the 26 minute title track, while good, feels a bit bland for its huge length. Overall, I highly recommend it.

Listening to this at the moment and I'm definitely enjoying it more than Funeral. Vocals are better and the general atmosphere is nicer (i.e. not as :smith: as Funeral). No Cars Go is really good.

I'm sure their solo efforts will be just as good. :downs:

Yeah. For some reason everyone says that Funeral or The Suburbs is their best album. I think it is Neon Bible as well. "Neon Bible" through "No Cars Go" is just mind-blowing!

Porcupine Tree - Deadwing
Wonderful, brilliant music. I wish more prog was like this, instead of pointless technicality. See, Deadwing isn't a very technical album, apart from a few odd time signatures. Instead it focuses on what I like to call musical effectivity, creating a soundscape with pretty simple means. Most of the time all that's playing is some guitar chords, a bassline coupled with tight drums, and soul-stirring vocals. Then, when the track actually benefits from it, the heavy guitar riffs come in, and again, when when the time is right, the synths and strings come in. It makes the music as a whole a lot less cluttered.
The vocal melodies are usually in focus, I'd say. Normally this is something that bugs me, but when the melodies in question are so beautiful and coupled so well with the instrumentation, it's not an issue. Steven Wilsons relatively high-pitched singing and vocal harmonies add an eerie and at times Pink Floyd-esque feel to the music while the lively, almost funky basslines and the snappy drumming lifts it up and stops it from being boring.
Overall a very balanced album. I find the ending disappointing though. Instead of going out with glory, trumpets blazing the album just fades away with a song that isn't bad, but is way too lame for an ending. I guess this is preference, but so is everything else of the damn planet so I might as well not say anything about anything. Anyway, the ending kind of takes the edge of the album, in a bad way, and instead of finishing the album with the fulfillment good music gives you I am left with a feeling there is one track left.
I give Deadwing an 8/10.
Favourite tracks:
Arriving somewhere but not here
Halo
Deadwing
Open car
I could never get into deadwing :smith:
Stupid Dream's their best imo. :pcgaming:

Open Car is one of the best choruses I've ever heard

Deadwing and In Absentia are their best albums, but FOABP is probably my favourite. I have to agree about Glass Arm Shattering though, it's never clicked with me. The remaster of Shesmovedon on the American issue is amazing though

This is a hard album to like. The mix of "folk" and electronica is a bit too experimental at times, but the songwriting is still up to a high standard, as one would expect of Claudio Sanchez. The vocals take a while to get used to aswell. But this album's full of nice little touches that make it interesting, like the industrial feel in "Accidents" or the spaghetti western atmosphere in "The Fight of Moses". Even the packaging is awesome, instead of an album booklet, the lyrics and album info are written on the back of tarot cards. :pcgaming:

Rush - Rush in Rio
9/10
This is one of the greatest live albums ever. Its amazing to hear the audience singing along with the guitar on instrumentals like YYZ, and what's even better is how close Rush always sound to their studio efforts, something few bands can accomplish, especially with the number of effects rush use. Sadly they had stopped performing 2112 in it's entirety by this album, and only the first two parts are played. This is a fine example of how to do a live album

Was one of the only Beatles albums I hadn't listened to. They may have been a bit poncy back in the beginning but I really liked this one; I kept waiting for a song to come on that I didn't really enjoy but it never happened, besides maybe You've Really Got A Hold On Me which was a bit 'meh'. My favourite tracks would probably be It Won't Be Long (great opener), All My Loving and I Wanna Be Your Man but it was defininitely quite a difficult choice picking them. Obviously not up there with Sgt Peppers and Revolver but I'd be quite happy with saying it was my favourite 'early Beatles' album. 9/10.
Shit son I feel like a right proper music critic

King Crimson - Discipline
Just one of those albums that took me awhile to get myself to play it all the way through. It's a really strange, the way some of the lyrics are presented, but it's still prog rock, and it's some really good stuff.
