Indie means indifferent, meaning that the band records while it is not signed to a big recording company, it has nothing to do with the way the band sounds.
It means independent. And it started out like that, but it evolved, and the bands became associated most with the larger indie labels were influenced by similar artists, and went on to influence others after them. Indie an umbrella genre in my eyes, like metal. But not as big.
Fucking accept it already! Yes, it IS a genre, it describes a very particular sound and style
True but I'm on the fence about Strokes being indie.

Look up "Indie Folk" then listen to a few songs.

A Tolkien LOTR-based metal concept album, with prominent vocal harmonies and a strong guitar-driven epic quality to the music. European power metal at its best.

That was the first meaning of the word, yeah. And if you say "indie film" or "indie game" that's probably what you mean. But Indie Pop and Indie Rock have developed into real genres.

So it only applies to indie folk, but that still doesn't make indie itself a genre.

Indie folk, indie rock and indie pop are genres, and indie is the umbrella term for the lot
oh it's this debate again. genres are useful tools because they describe the sound of music. indie is associated with certain traits of music, that makes it a genre idgaf

Enjoyed it thoroughly.
Just listened to Circa Survive discography (well all 3 LPs at least) so here goes nothing.

Juturna (7.5/10)
A well put together album with a few great standout tracks, but all in all the similar structure that carries over from song to song makes the album grow boring fast.

On Letting Go (8/10)
Some people view this album as Juturna 2.0 but personally I see this as an expansion on a method that already worked fairly well. On Letting Go succeeds at being less boring than Juturna, but those who didn't like Juturna will most likely not find much more to like here.

Blue Sky Noise (9/10)
Where Circa Survive failed on Juturna and On Letting Go, they succeeded on Blue Sky Noise to make a truly great album. It is way less boring than the previous two and explores new territory for the band. If you don't like their previous efforts, at least give this one a shot.

Van der Saar - Red Circle (2009)
Post-Rock(Punk?)/Folk or something like that
2/5
A few of the more Post-Rock styled songs stood out but most of it was boring.

Yes you're right. But we're just calling it that because we're to lazy too post "indie rock/pop/folk"

By a long shot the best of the concept trilogy, but there are moments here where it's hard to take E seriously. Some of the themes here are so corny that they're rarely explored otherwise, but E is one of the only guys who can pull it off properly. Some great emotional tracks let down by some terribly bland moments. Fresh Blood and My Timing is Off are probably the highlights.
By far the most cheerful Eels album, and even then it's barely so. It's no Electro Shock Blues but it's a worthwhile listen.

yeah that's ma shit. new york hip hop. great dj premier beats and Guru is an awesome rapper. he has a gret flow and mostly excellent lyrics, even if his delivery is a bit dry at times

ps this is one of those "consciouse hip hop" albums so if youre looking to get into hip hop without guns and hos stuff this is for you.

one day i need to revisit that. listened to it so much when I was a Tool fag in grade nine.. then forgot about them and found other music. I wonder if it's still as great as I remember.
I'll admit, the song Lateralus is fucking crazy, it rocks
But really imo tool only have a couple of good songs, others are just kind of boring. Instead of listening to Tool I listen to Karnivool, who are very similar but just way better imo, heavier, more interesting. I hate all the pseudo-psychological bullshit that Maynard spouts, puts me off it

I agree, there's some truly impressive songs they have but Maynard is just a douche in his attitude towards music and the albums are weighed down by misplaced meaningless tripe

I have to agree, Lateralus is a pretty uninteresting album overall. It's still one of my favourite albums, but 10 000 Days just seems much more varied and inspired. Luckily I'm okay with all the vague and pretentious lyrics because I've been listening to so much prog :v:. I think they have some amazing lyrics if you can look past all the bullshit.

10,000 days is so much more pop circlejerky though. Undertow, Aenima, and Lateralus are the pinnacles of Tool.

I'm probably being a bit harsh. I just hate the really pretentious fans, and I've really built an opinion based on them. Tool ARE a good band, I just can't make myself like them.

I don't really get what you mean, but yes, Aenima and Lateralus are better (not sure about Undertow). They should really get their shit together though, and start making more albums. I mean 6 years, really? It's just ridiculous.

It's real funny watching all the idiots trying to decipher the meaning of life from their fucking lyrics :v:. I don't know whats up with Tool and their fans. When I was really into them a couple of years back I was probably being an idiot about it myself, too. It's sad how the fans give the band such a bad name. If you ask someone why they don't like Tool, the answer´s always "Nah, Tool is ok, I just hate their fanbase".
hmm i don't like tool because they are ridiculously boring
and the singer's voice kinda sucks
haha tool music videos comments are some of the worst on youtube. everyone debates the same thing over and over.
they still hold a place in my heart for opening so much to me in music, i guess they were a transition stage

Reverend Bizarre
III: So Long Suckers
2007
9½/10
Holy fucking shit.
This album blew my expectations away and then continued to rape them while punching them in the face.
Its awesome. Just really, really awesome.
Anyway, songs:
They Used Dark Forces/Teutonic Witch

Damn. This is a brilliant way to start an album. A 29-minute song. Has some really cool riffs and the vocals are fantastic.
Sorrow

In my opinion, the worst song on the album. The album could've maybe gotten a 10/10 if it didn't have this song. Its pretty much the basic doom song in the first half, but the second half is really awesome.
Funeral Summer

GodDAMN this is badass. In my opinion its the second best song on the whole album. Just fucking awesome.
One Last Time

Can't really give it a good review, since I don't really remember alot about it. Fits the album nicely, though. Doesn't break the feeling.
Kundalini Arisen

Shortest song on the album (if you don't count the hidden bonus track). It has some REALLY great bass riffs. I absolutely love it.
Caesar Forever

Another song thats just OK. It gets better towards the end, but its just OK compared to the rest of the album.
Anywhere Out Of This World

Well, shit. There aint no better way to finish an album than a 25 minute epic song. I could listen to the first 3 minutes for forever, but then again, I couldn't listen to the rest of the song, so that would suck.
Its absolutely awesome. Best song on the album.
BONUS: Untitled Bonus Track

Doesn't really have alot of actual music. Kind of reminds me of Tool's Faaip De Oiad.
Overall, get this album if you like metal.
It isn't something to just listen to quickly before watching a movie or something, since its 130 minutes long.[/release]

4/5
This album was really good. When you listen to Slipknot's older stuff and then you listen to Vol.3 sublinimal verses, you can hear a REALLY big difference in the music. I liked all but one song in this album, the one song I didn't really like was Vermilion pt.2 because it was basicly just the pt.1 but just with an acoustic guitar and some light backing vocals. The songs on this album are catchy, mostly the chorus in some songs. As I said, the early Slipknot stuff was so much heavier than the songs on this album but that dosn't let down the album though. Overall, I had a good time listening to it.
