Agalloch - Ashes Against the Grain
A+
It's almost flawless, and the atmosphere is utterly wonderful. This can easily contend with The Mantle for best Agalloch album.

I never get tired of Tyr.

Devin Townsend Project - Deconstruction
A+
Went back and gave this another listen after getting my ticket to the Deconstruction show in November, and enjoyed this even more than I did before. It feels like 2/3 Ziltoid and 1/3 SYL, and that's a combination that works wonderfully. It's not as good as Addicted!, but it's definitely my second favourite DTP album.
Well, I've been going through a Dream Theater -discography marathon (fuck all the haters) and here are the ones I've listened to so far:

Dream Theater's first album, although not bad, is very likely the worst one.
This album was originally made before James LaBrie joined the band,
so the singer is Charlie Dominici. He does a pretty good performance.
Instrumentally the album is both good and just OK.
I really love all the solos and instrumental sections in the songs,
but some of the songs are not very memorable.
Highlights of the album in my opinion were A Fortune In Lies,
Ytse Jam and Light Fuse And Get Away.
Overall its an enjoyable album. Its not perfect, but its enjoyable.[/release]

Dream Theater's second album is often considered their best.
Its most likely their most rock-sounding album.
This is definitely better than the first album, but still not perfect.
One of the minus sides is that the snare drums are all triggered.
This album has much more memorable songs than their
first, though. Songs like Pull Me Under, Metropolis
and Learning to Live are definitely the highlights
of the album.

This is one of the few albums I can call "perfect".
Sadly their keyboardist Moore's last album, Awake,
is in my opinion DT's best album, right next to
Metropolis Pt. 2 and Octavarium.
Pretty much every song is memorable, with the
possible exception of "6:00". Sadly, this was
considered as a commercial failure for Dream Theater,
so they later had to make "Falling Into Infinity" to
please the radio and the producers.
Highlights of the album would be Erotomania,
The Mirror and Space-Dye Vest,
the last being one of my favorite song of all time.

I'll do the next three, A Change Of Seasons, Falling Into Infinity and Metropolis Pt. 2 later.
Love the formatting Hakita.

La Dispute - Wildlife (9.5/10)
La Dispute are, and have been for a while, one of my favorite, if not my favorite band. So I've been waiting for this album for a very long time and they just decided to stream it today, and I love it. First off, if you haven't heard their first album "Somewhere at the Bottom of the River Between Vega and Altair" I would highly recommend it, it is one of my favorite albums of all time. I have a deep connection to that album due to amazing timing in my life and I figured that I wouldn't take kindly to Wildlife because it could never live up to the way I felt about their previous album. In a way, I was right, but for the most part, I was completely wrong. This is nothing like their previous release, but any change was for the better. The songwriting has improved immensely with more natural buildups, less spastic changes, and a more clear and connected story that ties together the short stories within. The thing that will sway most listeners is the massive departure from the driving emotion of their previous album. The emotion is still there but they channel it in different ways, which is what I expected, and probably the reason that this album will most likely never "click" with me on the same level that "Somewhere at the Bottom..." did.
If you have never heard this band before, they sound a lot like mewithoutYou and some older emo bands (real emo) combined with a predominantly post-hardcore sound. I highly recommend their first album and their split with Touche Amore if you're interested in that. If you're interested in more indie, acoustic, experimental rock, or spoken-word, I recommend their Here. Hear. collection and their Koji split. Once you've done that, I recommend fans of any type of music to check out Wildlife. It is a completely different beast from anything they've done before, but it doesn't disappoint.
Tl;dr, its fucking good.

Odd, this is what Wikipedia says:
The band's record label considered the album a commercial failure, which would lead to the band being pressured to write more radio-friendly songs on their next studio album, Falling into Infinity.
You might be wondering why I only gave this 3½ stars, well,
its because the album really feels like one song with loads of
filler after it. The actual title song is very good and I really like
the Elton John cover they did, but otherwise its just a meh
album. Its usually considered an EP, but I have no idea
what I should call it. It feels like an EP but its pretty long for
one. Anyways, pretty nice album, highlights being the
before mentioned A Change Of Seasons and
Funeral For A Friend/Love Lies Bleeding.

So here it is, the infamous Falling Into Infinity. Definitely
a very poppy and radio friendly album, but it still has
a few very enjoyable songs and as a whole its actually
surprisingly good. This album has Hell's Kitchen, though,
which is an amazing short instrumental with alot of emotion.

Hell yeah! This is one incredible album! It comes very
close to Awake-like perfection, but has a few things that
I don't really like, such as the very liked The Spirit
Carries On. I will probably get flamed for what I just said,
but whatever. Anyways, it's Dream Theater's first concept
album and its a damn good one. The story is very interesting,
the characters are very interesting and the music is almost
always top notch. Theres some really questionable song
choices though, such as The Dance Of Eternity being a sex
scene. I just can't really imagine a sex scene changing time
signatures 128 times. Overall the album is incredible and
I suggest every Prog metal fan to get it. Highlights this
time are Overture 1928, Strange Deja Vu and
The Whole Second Half (except for The Spirit
Carries On)

Like I said, Scenes From A Memory is just an inch from Awake-like "perfection", but some small things make it just out of reach.
I do agree. SFAM gets overbearing at some stages and some parts, like En-Guage said, "try to be too deep". My favourite track is still The Dance of Eternity bar the rubbish bass solo
Dream Theater is one of my favorite bands, but I was rather disappointed in their last album, "A Dramatic Turn of Events".
6/10 I guess, no songs really stood out like their past albums.

I thought that Bridges In The Sky (though I like the original title, The Shaman's Trance, more) stood out very well. Outcry and Lost Not Forgotten were quite good too.

Bridges in the Sky had a pretty damn cool opening, but I just couldn't get too into it when it started. It's probably my favorite song from it though.
Maybe it's because I like the heavier music. I liked them first hearing Scenes from a Memory but my favorite albums were Octavarium, Systematic Chaos, and Black Clouds and Silver Linings.

I doubt that, since ADToE was pretty damn heavy, especially when compared to Octavarium.

Omar Rodriguez Lopez - XENOPHANES
4.5/5
This is definitely one of his more consistent works. It's all Spanish electric as fuck Omar Trademark Instrumental Prog-Rock with his awesome as shit guitar noises. High energy through out the majority of the album and some really nice vocal melodies. I wish I could speak Spanish, but not knowing makes the lyrics even prettier. The last few tracks are kind of weaker but eight of eleven tracks are awesome as fuck
Give it a listen.
Also i will agree with Hakita that Erotomania is fucking awesome, I heard a snippet of the song in this really old video on YouTube and finally found the rest of this song

File this under stuff I never thought I could like and now I actually love despite my hipster shame
seriously this is like a 9/10 for me now. I thought Morrissey was just some whiner at first but there's something clever and poetic to his lyrics, especially the sort of funny Frankly Mr. Shankly (which I like to play in my head when I'm at work). of course the band is great- Marr has really catchy guitar parts teetering between post punk and jangle pop or whatever. The bass is shockingly perfect, thanks to the beautiful production on the album. I love the way Morrissey sings with this sort of romantic style and beautiful, confident tone. Though the best thing about the smiths though is definitely Morrisey's hair, which has proven itself over many years to be one of the true classics of rock music.

Six Degrees is a 2CD album, with the first CD being a bunch of
songs unrelated to eachother and the second CD being the
40-minute title song. CD1 is quite good, with the only bad
parts being the first 2 songs, The Glass Prison and Blind Faith.
Although these songs aren't bad, they're definitely alot worse
than the rest of them. CD2 is great. Although there are a few
questionable parts, overall its very enjoyable and it builds up
to a great climax and a slightly dragged out 2-minute fade out
for some reason. Highlights, you may ask? Misunderstood,

I consider Train Of Thought to be a 5/5 album. Unlike Awake,
there is not a single song that is worse than the others on this

Congratulations, Dream Theater, thats 2 5/5 albums in a row!
As an unsurprising twist, Octavarium is also an incredible album.
It has a great balance of softer Dream Theater with I Walk
Beside You and The Answer Lies Within and heavy Dream
Theater with Panic Attack and Sacrificed Sons. It all builds up
to an incredible finale that is the title track. Its my second
favorite song of all time and it goes through all the great
emotions that you could expect from a prog epic.
I think that this album is a modern classic.
It also has incredible amounts of hidden stuff, like the whole
5/8 thing and the "ending where it begins" theme.

One of the most emotionally inspired EP's i've ever heard. from the screaming on the first track "what the hell am i doing here?" to the beautiful violin lines of "sunshine in the morning" this album, to the electronic track "and i". Just a beautiful album, great lyrics, and littered with emotion. Highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys a garage-band style of music, and best of all, it's free!
