A great soundtrack of him playing his good ol' guitar. I've got to respect this guy, he obviously knows his shit in programming and blows peoples minds with it, then turns around and shreds the bass. 5 stars.

A-
A strong album, and it's nice to see that Mastodon are continuing to vary their style, bringing some very nicely executed stoner metal influence onto this album. Seems to get better as it goes on, after the first few tracks I wasn't expecting anything spectacular but then everything from the title track onwards is just fantastic.

I loved this. You couldn't ask more from a "best of" album. I really liked the selection of tracks they put on it.

Really? I really enjoyed the first few tracks, with Curl of the Burl and All the Heavy Lifting being as good as anything on the second half. But yeah, it's a fantastic album. I'd actually maybe go so far as to say I preferred some of it over Skye.
Ah well.

Holy shit this made my day. This comes from the vocalist and bassist of some band some people may know called Mellowdrive and
it's their first album and it is also completely FREE. Basically, when you listen to this expect some alien
electronic shoegaze album full of space ballads and nice dancy rock songs. This reminds me of like a Space Have A Nice Life.
I may be over selling it, but I think it's something you should check out especially since it is free. Click on the album art to go to the site.

Aww, DT, you were doing so well! I mean, its not a bad album,
but still, after Octavarium and Train Of Thought, it was a huge
disappointment. Half the songs are bad and half really good, so its a
hard review to do. I suppose I could've given it a 5.5/10, but ehh.
Anyways, this is when Dream Theater started doing music for
Roadrunner, which is sadly the point in which they started going
downhill. Instead of the great blend of Prog rock and awesome metal,
their just going for the metal approach with slight prog influences.
Its definitely not a bad album, but compared to what DT did before,
its an incredible disappointment and just OK. Highlights are
The Dark Eternal Night, The Ministry Of Lost Souls and
In The Presence Of Enemies Pt. 2.

This is Dream Theater building up from their new 'metal' approach.
Definitely better than Systematic Chaos, but still falls short when
compared to Octavarium and ToT. Also, I didn't do the second CD
for this review, because it felt more like bonus content than an
actual part of the album, plus The Count Of Tuscany is just too good
of an ending to continue into a bunch of covers. Almost all tracks
are great, with the possible exceptions of A Nightmare To Remember
(drags out too long IMO) and A Rite Of Passage, which felt more
like an attempt to get more radio time than an attempt to write
a good song. Highlights are The Shattered Fortress,
The Best Of Times and The Count Of Tuscany.

Apparently DT calls this their "return to the roots", but I don't
really think so. Its more like their last albums, but with a little
Images & Words in there, even a bit TOO much sometimes,
such as On The Backs Of Angels, which sounds disappointingly
similar to Pull Me Under, again, most likely for more radio time.
Now, what I do like about this album is that it still has the
heavy riffs of the last albums, but at least tries to sound
prog again. Not as memorable as Black Clouds & Silver Linings,
but still has a few hidden gems, such as the highlights, which are
Lost Not Forgotten, The Shaman's Trance/Bridges In The Sky
and Outcry.

That concludes my Dream Theater marathon, expect me to do some Devin Townsend and Mastodon reviews soon-ish!

Steven Wilson - Grace for Drowning
A-
My feelings on this are a little mixed. It's a very good album definitely, but with it's hefty 83 minute running time, and the 23 minute track Raider II, it's clearly intended as a display of prog grandeur, and it hasn't been particularly successful at that aim. There are plenty of great songs on here, but the shorter songs seem to be superior. No Part of Me, Postcard, Index and Track One are all among the best tracks on the album, as is Deform to Form a Star, but the other longer songs tend to be weaker, and the colossal Radier II, though it has its moments, gets boring and seems to be a clear case of long-song-for-the-sake-of-it. Then again, criticising it for its lack of grandeur is just judging on my expectations. It's not the grand masterpiece I was hoping for, but it's still great.

Amazing album, getting to hear all the rarities that didn't make the final cut is great. I'm taking off .25 because I really, really, really want to hear full band and studio recordings of these songs, but sadly it's not Nirvana's fault. =\

Mogwai - Earth Division EP
4.5/5
Really nice EP right here. It's VERY different from Mogwai's stuff. This EP is like Mogwai trying to meet Godspeed half way, I think. Two of the four songs are very sombre instrumental pieces that don't last longer than five minutes. The other two are 'Hound of Winter' which is a really beautiful acoustic song with some nice quiet singing. The other track is a loud and exciting track called 'Drunk and Crazy'. They're all good songs, but if I have to say something negative about them it'd be that the final song 'Does This Always Happen?' is a little too long. I took .5 off because even for an EP it's pretty short ending at just over 16 minutes.
Two of the latest from my recent dive back into post-rock. Both of them ironically two pretty good "Godspeed ripoffs".

(The) Slowest Runner (In All The World) - We, Burning Giraffes (7.5/10)
The GY!BE influences here are almost too much to ignore, even the band's persona reflects Godspeed's. However, they still manage to make some unique music. Its basically a mosh of a ton of post-rock influences (Sigur Ros, GY!BE, Kashiwa Daisuke, etc.) but it works well enough, even though the band isn't treading any new ground here. My problem with this album is that, while the climaxes are epic and the melodies are often beautiful, the buildups are boring and ultimately don't succeed in building the song. Thats not to say that there isn't anything to like about this album, Zoe Machete Control and the title track are both near masterpieces of the genre and surprisingly enough, the two interludes are two of the strongest tracks as well. The last half of the album really drags, but this album is more than worth your time if you like post-rock. If you're new to the genre, start somewhere else.

Yndi Halda - Enjoy Eternal Bliss (9.5/10)
Now this is what I'm talking about. It almost seems unfair to call these guys a Godspeed ripoff as they capture something completely different with their music than Godspeed does. Yndi Halda combines Explosions in the Sky with the prevalent strings of pre-2000s Godspeed but instead of playing the desolate, sad music of Godspeed, they play the uplifting, whimsical music of EITS. Their long songs build seamlessly and never really feel as long as they are (11 minutes to 20 minutes). Every minute of this upwards-of-an-hour-long album is captures you and hardly ever lets go. The clear GY!BE influences aside, this album is one to be heard by any fan of music, especially post-rock fans (although I imagine most have heard this by now). A near masterpiece within its own genre.

Nah, all of their music except their most recent album and this EP are pretty similar. The majority of their discography is just cool instrumental rock and this is like pretty sombre music.
