i used to hate that album, I thought Sister Ray was unlistenable. But now for some reason I just really enjoy hearing it to the point where I'm GLAD it's a whole side of vinyl, because I don't want it to end. Comforting music somehow
yeah at one point you can think that what Hendrix did was just noise, but then you start to feel something and boom, your experience has changed.
[release] Red House Painters - Down Colorful Hill Genre: indie rock Gloomy and bleak, with an atmosphere that reminds me of Slint's Spiderland even though the two bands/records ultimately have very little in common. As humorless and downbeat as the album is, it never descends into self-parody and remains compelling throughout. The instrumentation itself is subdued and subtle, trading bombast and technical wankery for mood and sensitivity. An essential piece or early 90s indie, back when "indie" still wasn't a dirty word. Comforting music somehow
It was the same for Venus in Furs from VU & Nico album. Sister Ray is a great song, the length of it makes it perfect to listen to on my way to/from school/work. Tough I dislike The Gift because how depressing and brutal it is.

My favorites are Cavern, Encounter, and The Best Is Yet To Come. I really can't think of anything really wrong with this soundtrack. 10 out of 10
The Protomen - Act II - The Father of Death
A+
I was recommended this a long time ago and never got to it. I finally gave the album a listen recently. All I can say is that I regret not listening to this earlier. Everything from the story behind the lyrics to the vocals and the instrumentation is great. It feels a bit cheesy at a few points although it does add a bit of charm as well. This album flows nicely and has a great story behind it. High Points: The Good Doctor, Father of Death, The Hounds, The State Vs. Thomas Light, Breaking Out, Keep Quiet, Light Up The Night Low Points: N/A
Sometimes I feel like I'm the only one who didn't think that Act II was amazing. I thought that the earlier album was WAY better.
[release] Rapeman - Two Nuns And A Pack Mule Genre: noise rock So Steve Albini of Big Black/Shellac fame formed a band with two of the guys from Scratch Acid(one of whom would end up in the Jesus Lizard) back in the mid 80s, and this is the result of that collaboration. Needless to say, it is a fine result. From the abrasive, metallic guitars and the violent yet controlled drumwork to Albini's trademark wails and lyrics just as heartwarming and sensitive as the ones he wrote in Big Black(which is to say, not heartwarming or sensitive at all), this is an essential piece of 80s underground rock. Steve Albini is god. 8/10[/release]

Then again I shouldn't compare the two considering how different they are. This one has around 2 or 3 songs with rapping while the other 13 or 14 are either spoken words (or yelling if he's pissed off) with some subtle music, or a sound scape with Dolan talking to his computer friend. The concept is he is the last man on earth after some sort of apocalypse and has only a computer to talk to. He has tapes around some sort of bunker he lives in and plays the poetry on them. It's really something you would have to listen to all the way to get the most enjoyment out of it, since there are only about 7 tracks that work alone while the rest makes the album a good listen.
[release]
New Trolls - Concerto grosso per i New Trolls (1971)
Genre: progressive rock, symphonic rock One of the most exciting progressive/symphonic rock albums I have ever heard. The first track (you can listen to it below) sets off the album in an exciting mood, which then subsides along with the next two tracks. But during the later bit of the last track the music just fucking bombards you with everything and after listening you feel exhausted, wanting more. Space Art - Space Art (1977) Genre - Progressive Electronic 8/10 Obviously other people might disagree, given that not everyone has my infinite tolerence for dated synths and cheesy space noises. Well, it's not like anyone likes people who don't like amazing spacy music anyway. Listening to this album makes me feel like I'm in a late 70's cult sci-fi film - one with more in common with 2001: A Space Odyssey than Star Wars. The music is composed of layers upon layers of lush, elegant synths. It's not perfect by any means, a few of the songs are a bit slow and lack the massive orchestral sweep of synthsounds that I really love in old electronic albums, but generally it delivers wonderfully.
Flying Colors - Flying Colors 8/10 I really like the idea of this band. Coupling virtuoso musicians (Mike Portnoy, Dave Larue, Steve Morse and Neal Morse) with an alt-rock singer/songwriter (Casey McPherson) brings together the complexity that I love about progressive rock, jazz, and metal and the simplicity and catchiness of alt-rock/pop. There are some really catchy tunes on this album and it's full of stunning guitar and bass solos, dense harmonies, and fantastic choruses. It's not perfect however, certain songs feel like they don't develop enough, and a couple of songs in the middle of the album run out of steam and sound a little the same. But it's still a really good release. Highlights would have to be Blue Ocean, Kayla, The Storm and Infinite Fire.
Kvelertak - Self Titled -
A
It's really hard to pigeon-hole Kvelertak's sound with one label, but likely the best way to describe them is a black metal/black'n'roll band with heavy hardcore punk and classic rock influences. Kvelertak's lyrics are all in Norwegian but from what I've heard the lyrics deal with Viking and Norse mythology. This band's music is fast and aggressive but also have a few moments of down time because let's face it, fourty fucking minutes of nothing but hard and fast playing is god damn boring. My only complaint is that their music is very eccentric. It lacks a specific sound that caters to a specific audience so it's really hard to recommend this to anyone. High Points: Mjød, Fossegrim, Blodtørst, Offernatt, Sjøhyenar (Havets Herrer)
I've been really listening to Onra's Chinoseries and Air's Le Voyage Dans La Lune. Both are albums that you totally need to listen to all at once to get the full effect. Air - 9/10 Onra - 8/10

[release] Wooden Shjips - West (2011) Genre: Psych-Rock West is an album that consists of songs I usually don't enjoy. Songs where the musician seemingly has no idea how to end it (Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating in Space comes to mind) and it just ends with a fade-out or an abrupt ending. However, in context of this being a sort of 70s San Francisco psych-rock music thing, I think it works. It consists of 7 tracks, all are very similar with a loud distorted guitar pretty much doing the same thing the entire song with drowned out vocals and spacey synths doing their thing. You can imagine that for 7 tracks of the same thing can get quite boring, and it does. There are at least two stand out songs on here; Black Smoke Rise, the opener, is probably best suited to summarize the whole album. The second standout track is Lazy Bones which is probably the fastest track on the album and was used in an episode of The Walking Dead! I can see West being great while tripping on something or stoned, but it's far too boring and repetitive for me to bear while sober, and that is a great fault. Favorite tracks: Black Smoke Rise, Lazy Bones Rating: 6/10 [/release]
Dukes of Stratosphear - Psonic Psunspot Genre - Loving 60's music parody Basically, in the 80s at some point or whenever, Andy Partridge and the other fellas from XTC decided they wanted to do a nice loving parody of all the generic 60's music tropes - The Hollies, The Kinks, Syd Barrett, Beach Boys, you name it. So they rebranded themselves as the Dukes of Stratosphear and released an EP, 25 O'Clock, followed by a full album, Psonic Psunspot. While I've heard 25 O'Clock is a little better in terms of clever production and better music that sounds different to XTC, Psonic Psunspot is engaging, catchy and very, very fun. It's interspersed with narration by a little girl talking about your generic drug addled crazy shit, like puffins drinking from tea saying that "You just can't get the buttons these days", which is always a bit surprising and has made me laugh out loud more than once. Songs like Pale and Precious could be lifted straight from Sunflower or Surf's Up, Vanishing Girl is pretty much the Hollies and if you listen to Have You Seen Jackie you'll wonder why it wasn't on Piper of the Gates of Dawn. After a few repeated listens I was pretty much in the zone of listening to this album non stop just because it makes me smile. It's just a really good band who have a lot of expectations placed on them breaking out and having a bit of fun, that's all there is to it, and the songs are good and this is my new feel good music. Rating - 8/10

Odd Future - The OF Tape Vol.2 8/10, a couple sub-par cuts but really strong overall

Very original sound, post rock done with orchestral instruments and some electronic stuff. Most of the time the album is pretty calm and extremely emotional. However, it takes a sudden turn at the second last song, which is incredibly chaotic and even slightly creepy at times. After that, though, the very last song is incredibly calm, which contrasts perfectly. The Wonder of the album is definitely Dance for Borderline Miscanthus, which I mentioned before as the chaotic climax. This one takes a very different direction than the last one most of the time, with a much poppier sound and overall happier and less emotional direction. However, this doesn't make the album worse at all. Also, remember that I said 'most of the time'. The electronic stuff is much more present and used much more than on Hurtbreak Wonderland, but it fits the style much better this way. The songs are a lot catchier and memorable and work incredibly well as songs, rather than the last album, which worked better as a whole. However, this album still does have it's downsides, my main complaint being the second last song 'The Offering Inferno', which tries to be Dance for Borderline Miscanthus, but goes for complete chaos, rather than DoBM's well balanced nature. The least Idiotic title goes for the epic Bohemian Purgatory (Pts. 1-3)

Hurtbreak Wonderland is brilliant, thats the only WEG album I've heard so far though. I love Birthday Resistance, 100 Years of Choke, and Bless Yourself Bleed. I need to check out some more WEG albums. Have you heard Program Music I by Kashiwa Daisuke? Same style of post-rock and just as good.
