Pantera - Vulgar Display Of Power - 1992
10/10
My favourite Pantera album mainly because of sheer childhood nostalgia, if you're looking for some epic thrashy metal with groove, you can't go wrong with this.

Swans - Children of God 8.5/10
This album feels like a pretty natural culmination of everything Swans had done up to this point in their career. It's got the droning song structures and Gira's strange warbled vocals combined with his earlier aggression; however, the progression finally starts to really show on this album. Swans start incorporating more even more sounds, most notably a sort of dark-folk sound. Jarboe's beautiful but eerie vocals also start to take front seat a bit more on this album. Overall, this album is the first I have felt is really cohesive, and enjoyable in its entirety. I can see why it's a fan favorite and I imagine it will grow on me even more but for now it's a lot to digest in just two listens.
Standout Tracks: The album is really great throughout but New Mind, In My Garden, Sex God Sex, and Beautiful Child really stood out on the first listen.
I'm having a bit of trouble getting a hold of The Burning World but I'll try to listen to that and White Light ASAP.
rocknroll, do you have a rym account?
Yea, I do, it's the same as here. I haven't gone on a rating spree lately but I'll update it pretty soon.
[editline]19th June 2012[/editline]
Actually I take that back I rated the first four Swans albums.
I might look into rym
I think I have an account but I've never used it

I reviewed Ruined Emo by Manbearpig (i'll post it here at the end because may as well)
I was writing their profile since they didn't have one, and I was basically totally done everything and then I clicked on the tab to just finish it off and I clicked the X and lost it all :'( life is hard

Ruined Emo- Manbearpig
2010
Genre- Emo, punk, post-hardcore
One of the greatest punk/emo releases of all time if you ask me. They resemble 90's emo and punk bands like Mineral, Braid, Rites of Spring (ok they're 80's but whatever) etc, difference being they're not so cheery upbeat and they don't really draw much resemblance to indie rock like most of that kind of band do. They take more the hardcore and I guess screamo edge (although their vocalist doesn't really scream, but more sing-shouts the lyrics with his sexy as fuck english accent. Done in a similar way to Gallows I guess, for a popular band comparison) Only 5 songs and only 14 minutes but it's got so much emotion and consistency it doesn't matter. if you find it too short, just put it on again. I've listened to it well over a hundred times (genuine figure) It never gets dull or boring. Every song is great, I couldn't pick a favourite. There's not really anything particularly complex about the arrangements, instruments or technical ability displayed in this EP, but that's not what it's about. The lyrics deal with pretty common stuff for an emo band. (love, heartbreak, death etc) But I'm yet to hear any band convey them in such a way.
I don't even know what it is about this that makes it so amazing. It just is. And if you haven't heard it, you should.
5/5

vote up the profile pls!!
That EP's pretty good. I don't hear much 90's emo in it but it reminds me of a less depressed More Than Life.

by "listened to" I mean i went on youtube and just listened to both of the verses on Lifes a Bitch over and over, skipping the chorus and just listening to one as soon as the other finished. it still counts cause I listen to this a lot. anyway AZ's status as legend is pretty much built upon that verse. (his album Doe or Die is definitely worth hearing though). and well I just like everything about this, the rapping is carefully laid out and intriguing, not monotone, but it doesn't get lost by attempting too much complexity, so it maintains tons of energy throughout the full length of the album. Every song is a highlight. The intro is one of the few in hip hop with replay value (I've only listened to the intro on Liquid Swords a handful of times out of many more times I've listened to that whole album). perfect pacing, length is perfect, perfect everything, best hip hop album ever oh god . I rarely ever give out perfect scores, maybe I'll bump this down a point eventually but for now I can't get enough of this. Of the past year or two I must have listened to this album more than any other.
10/10

Hybrid Theory might as well be the only Linkin Park album, considering that everything else they've made is hardly even worth the time for a fan. A few years back I was head-over-heel about this band but the only thing I liked were the 3 most popular songs off the album; Crawling, In The End, and Papercut, and while modern me still thinks they're passable songs, the entire album falls flat. It tosses around a few good ideas, has some interesting guitar work at some parts, and the songs are really catchy and have a decent atmosphere, but it's so obnoxious, melodramatic, and whiny. It's not as bad as a lot of people say it is but it's hardly even decent.
I know a guy who got that album cover tattooed on his arm./ linkin park
He never was the full shilling.

El-P - Cancer 4 cure
El-P's album 'I'll sleep when you're dead' is actually the first album to help me transition into my avid love of hip-hop, so I was stoked to hear this had come out. I pretty much love everything about it, it's classic El Production style, and the lyrical content is brash as ever, with 'For my upstairs neighbour (mum's the word)' about domestic abuse and murder. From me it's a solid 8/10 or a light 9/10
Maroon 5 - Overexposed

As far as this album goes, it was a downhill experience. I haven't really liked Maroon 5 since hearing their recent stuff but I really liked Payphone so I gave it a chance, and it's also been a long time since I can recall listening to an album at its approximate release (it's been released in the US and the UK, but doesnt come out in stores here for another 2 days). Payphone is the second song on the album. Unfortunately after there I had yet to find a song as catchy and memorable as it. The album has a nice sound to it, I really like Adam Levine's voice and the pop-rock sound in general, which made it listenable, but that was pretty much the only redeeming quality of the album. Besides the fact I could listen to it enough to complete it, it was very lackluster and did little to entertain me, but it's not the worst seeing as I didn't really expect more than a few catchy hooks. It's not an album I can see me listening to again. Fortune Teller was pretty good in comparison to the rest, but for me it's mostly filler.
5/10

Swans - The Burning World 5/10
It's hard to believe this is a follow up to the dark and gloomy Children of God. The Burning World is Swans at their happiest and poppiest. On it's own, it is a fairly mediocre pop record, but as a Swans album it is extremely disappointing especially considering it directly followed one of their most inspired and cohesive works yet. Gira and Jarboe both sound uninterested and most of the music on the album sounds extremely forced. While the ever growing instrumentation and songwriting are both here, they just don't work like they did on previous albums. There isn't much more to say about this album other than that it is really average and an obvious misstep for Swans. Luckily they dropped their label after this album flopped and stepped back on the right path.
Standout Tracks: Saved, I Remember Who You Are
I'd like to say maybe this album will grow on me but to be honest I probably won't listen to this too much in the future, even some of the better songs on here just didn't do anything for me.

Swans - White Light From The Mouth Of Infinity 8/10
Right from the get go this album sounds like the worthy successor to Children of God that The Burning World was not. I was surprised to find that they actually took more elements from The Burning World than I expected, but this time it just works. White Light turns out to be a good middle ground between Children of God and The Burning World, it isn't as dark or aggressive as Children of God, but at the same time it isn't as happy, poppy, or accessible as The Burning World. The result is a sort of melancholy but ultimately consistent effort from the band. Gira and Jarboe both go back to sounding like they give a shit and the music starts to show more signs of progressing towards the post-rock sound that Swans would later adopt. A clear standout on this album is the track Failure, it's one of the darkest on the album but the lyrics are fantastic and Gira's delivery is even more fantastic as he sort of mumbles the words over swelling reverb and delay ridden guitars. Worth mentioning since it's probably my favorite Swans song thus far.
Standout Tracks: The album is extremely consistent throughout but as mentioned before Failure is a definite highlight.
A little bit longer winded this time, I guess I just had stronger opinions on these albums. Anyways, I should hopefully be able to listen to the rest of the albums this week, though I only got through two last week. Really eager to get to Soundtracks as I'm anticipating loving it.
Wow you're actually doing their entire discography in one week...
Rarely could I do that.
[editline]25th June 2012[/editline]
on the right off
Nah I think it's already been more than a week. I kind of blasted through the first 4 or 5. I'll be taking it slower for the next few, giving a few listens to each.
[editline]24th June 2012[/editline]
I spent a couple days on both Children of God and White Light, the rest didn't really need that long to sink in.
so much more dedicated than I am.... I just throw tons of stuff in my collection and put on stuff whenever I remember I have it :p
I almost always listen to albums as soon as I get them. Of course, I listen to music on my ipod at work so I like to have at least a few new albums lined up for each 8 hour shift. That's mostly when I've been listening to all of these Swans albums.
A-
This is an album which doesn't quite know what genre it wants to be. The middle three tracks are vocal-centric post-rock, kind of reminds me of Horses in the Sky though the vocals here are much easier to enjoy. The first and last tracks on the other hand want to be prog, with some lovely Gilmouresque guitar work on the opener and a final track which reminds me of Phideaux with its passionate female vocals. It's a muddled album, but the songs are all great on their own and really powerful in places. Highly recommended.
Standout tracks: Troublemaker, We Forgotten Who We Are.

Not gonna bother with a proper rating because I can't be arsed. But this is, hands down, album of the year so far for me. So many great cuts.

Every one of the songs on this album are worth listening to (Unlike some of their newer albums).

Alice in Chains - Alice in Chains / Tripod
9/10
I've always been an Alice in Chains listener but I haven't really listened to most of their stuff. I decided to download the discography and the cover of "Tripod" drew me in. The untitled album, the coloration, and the sad little three legged dog made this album stand out in my collection, so I started to listen.
What I found is quite possibly an album 100% devoted to the genres Alice in Chains is known for; Grunge and Hard-Rock. Each song has unique guitar riffs, a dirty attitude, and haunting lyrics. It's quite possibly a perfect grunge album, as it takes the attributes of the typical grunge band's lifestyle.

lil b is a horrible rapper on all technical levels but a strangely endearing persona. and the beats are HOLY JESUS. listen to "I'm God", flawless. I don't know what it is with these "cloud rap" producers teaming up with the swag rappers but for some reason it works?

i wouldn't call it perfect but that's definitely my favourite AIC album, who were one of my favourite bands a few years ago. I've always thought Shame In You was one of their best songs.

i really can't decide actually which version I like more. i mean instrumental is a glorious chill hip hop (actually probably my go-to instrumental hip hop) but with lil b it's so much more fun.
Yeah, there are very few hip hop instrumentalists that can capture the energy of a really great hip hop record.

Damnation by Opeth
I'd give it a 7/10. The songs are beautifully written as well as the lyrics, but many of them get tiring way too quick. It's a good relaxation album, though.
Grace by Jeff Buckley. 9.5/10. Fucking brilliance on so many levels

his Sketches For My Sweetheart The Drunk is a really depressive album imo, go for it.

This album is fucking AWESOME.
Combining Swing with Metal is the best invention since sliced bread.
Also, the album's style changes a lot each song, but still stays similar enough.
The female opera-ish singer might sound a bit odd at first, but atleast I got used to her.
All of the songs on the album are energetic, well written and well performed.
The best song, although it was Damned hard to choose, is a tie between
A Tap Dancer's Dilemma and Lucy Fears The Morning Star.
