Forget about finding gays and just live your life. Get involved in hobbies that you enjoy as much as you can. If you are particularly into meeting other gays find some lgbtq+ groups to get involved in and don't do it for the sex. Just do it to help out, do a good job.
I made friends, not hookups by actively trying to not have hookups and engaging in activities I liked to do. Grindr and the like can be dangerous. It's very bad for your mental health (it's a barter place for looks) BUT I have met my three [I]best[/I] friends on Grindr so it's not an entirely poor resource.
I agree with Kalamari on the college campus thing. University is the place to be re meeting good people.

Don't get hung up on the idea of finding a gay best friend. Even as a gay person that's contrived. Idk what city you are in but if Justin Trudeau is your PM you should be more than right in any city with more than a million people. And rarely should 100k present a problem. If you hit below that mark then yeah, move to a more progressive place and then you might find the people who you most resonate with are in fact breeders!

Well I've not only watched Calgary's gay scene die out, going from something like 5 gay bars to 1, we don't have any major gay clubs, associations or neighbourhoods. I've also seen lots of recreational places close down, hobby shops, bowling alleys, theatres and shit, they either don't get replaced, or some high-profile clothing store buys them, and closes in a year because no-one can afford that shit anymore. About 20 years ago this city made the decision to basically drop anything "fun" but rodeo and focus completely on work, now the jobs are all gone because oil is taking a shit so even that is fading away, downtown is almost deserted lately. I've been in a few bars lately and the atmosphere is downright depressing, people aren't there to party or relax, they're all drinking because they've lost their oil jobs. Maybe I'm just being too negative. It's just frustrating when I've finally come out of my slump, and I've gotten over a big depression spike and I've finally motivated myself to fucking go out and look for jobs, fun, and people, I find that there's just nothing left.
Well at least I'm getting good exercise biking to all these places.
