Yes. That's exactly what I did. I told them "Don't talk to me about Undertale, I'm waiting to play it until it's out of the immediate public eye so I can go in blind and without bias." And that's exactly what I did and I'm enjoying the hell out of the game because of it.
I like how you can't even mention Undertale without getting a really polarizing reaction to it.

I really enjoyed Undertale, but I played it closer to when it first came out
I honestly think that if you were to start Undertale today, knowing what the fanbase and hype surrounding it is, it would be a different game

Honestly, if that's the way they'd act towards you for playing [I]a game[/I], they're not really worth keeping around. It's really childish to overreact to something as trivial as that.
I feel like people need to stop taking games/movies/music so fucking personally, positively or negatively. If playing a game/seeing a movie/hearing a song changed your life and made you feel really good, that's great. At the end of the day, it's still just a game/movie/song. Choosing to revolve your life around it is really narrow minded and ignorant when there's a lot more the world has to offer other than that.
Inversely, if you don't like a game/movie/song, then that's great too. It's your choice not to like something. This doesn't give you any precedent over someone who DOES like it. This certainly doesn't give you the right to harass and be a dick to someone who doesn't hate it like you do. It's all common sense, but of course, people let shit get to them way too much.
