if you're having trouble understanding things like "why do 犬 and 太 look so similar" and don't want to take "they just do" for an answer i highly recommend looking into henshall's guide to kanji it dives deep into the etymology of the jouyou characters, showing the centuries of evolutions, mistakes, mix-ups and borrowings that gave us modern kanji. though having been written in the 70s, it may be somewhat outdated, and the mnemonics are mostly useless.
Oh my god, yes. I've completely forgotten how much I loved the vibes Tokyo gives off. It's like a drug.
Some words are written with irrelevant kanji simply because of their phonetic value. Neither of the kanji in the word 寿司 (sushi) mean anything relating to food :v:
Why would you write it out in Kanji rather than phonetically? Especially since its two characters either way and less confusing in hirigana.
Why would you write it out in Kanji rather than phonetically? Especially since its two characters either way and less confusing in hirigana.
Because it's less confusing. Chinese only has one pronunciation per character (I'm pretty sure anyways) but Japan fixed that.

It seems to be a book about how to code machine language for the Z80 and 6809 families of computers.
Yeah it's a book on machine language, it also contains pictures of machine language programs to look at. Specifically the master collection for Z80/6809 I'm pretty amazed that I managed to get that the left half of the left most character was 糸 despite it being really fucking small and blobby.

I live in Okinawa and I hate it for obvious reasons
Serious question. Why are there people on the streets after 9PM or so trying to get me into seedy bars for massages and women and sex....and why the fuck is it always a black guy trying to do this? I'm fucking having to walk around the block and in the back entrance to get into my hotel at night and even then, they fucking loiter everywhere. I couldn't even get into the Lawson's without the asshole trying to haggle me.

Unfortunately, if you're staying at a really cheap hotel in those kinds of places, that's what you get. Anyways, hit me up via PM if you need directions and are actually in Tokyo. I may be able to assist you, as I am very familiar with the geography of the Greater Tokyo Area. Unfortunately, however, I am nowhere near familiar with the geography of Osaka and the surrounding area, so I apologize as I won't be able to assist you in those areas.

I'm assuming it's simply because this is a bar district.
I'm literally four or five blocks from Shinjuku station and not even a block off the main drag. The moment I cross that road they're nowhere to be seen. I have the opportunity to go to Japan this coming summer for $125 for roundtrip tickets. I'd be going to Sasebo with some friends to visit a Navy friend stationed there. It's an amazing opportunity but I don't have a lot of money so I'm a bit cautious of going. What do you guys think? How much money do you think a week would cost for about 4 people in Japan? Minus the flight of course.
Dude, $125 round-trip for tickets? Fuck, even if you're broke just go for the experience. Airfare is like $1500 normally.

I also thought as long as I wasn't restricted and go as I please and be treated like a grown adult but NOOOOOOO and you are restricted on-base because some dumbasses wanted to go out and rape girls before I came to the island. You can be off base, but the military is so restricted by curfew, I can't stand being on this island anymore, staying here for 2 years is god awful, I contemplate suicide (not serious) and with the added stress of being away from family and your superiors ( some of them the same age or younger than you ) yell at you, I can see why people get in trouble or commit suicide.

Also if you can't stand the very lenient restrictions now you would have been pretty miserable following the initial fallout from that rape..0100 curfew is not bad at all.
I am currently studying Hiragana, I can read it, spell the typical Romajis with it and I can write it. How/when should I start to expand my vocabulary? Should it be after I master reading and writing Katakana? After Kanji? Are there any children's books, particularly Amazon ones that could assist?
after the kana the next recommended step is genki
So the liquor store had canned sake, which I've never seen before, so I bought some. Yes, I know that $10 is too much for it.

Also, CC lemon seems to be great for dealing with hangovers. What an unexpected use.
When I read things that are only kana I really miss kanji, when I see things like 沢 (swamp) + 山 (mountain) = 沢山 (very) I start to wonder why I am doing this to myself. Bonus points are awarded because literally everywhere else I've seen it was just written as たくさん (first time I saw it I thought it was a name). It is getting better now that I'm up to about 400 kanji (mostly just the meanings though) since the new ones that are added are ones I've either seen before or start to notice as I'm reading things. I don't seem to be able to scale kanji radicals down whenever they get squished so I end up with things like 暑 being twice as high as it should be. 趣 is probably my favourite kanji at this point and I'm not really sure why. I understand why wwwwwwwwww is a thing but it's still strange to me. I am past the stage of having さん on the end of names be mildly humorous but I don't know how long it will take for もしもし to stop sounding silly (will it?). I watched some English videos with Japanese subtitles and it was some good reading practice, although I had to choose between not reading the Japanese or not watching the foxes. How come movies are so much easier to understand than normal shows? I watched おおかみこどもの雨と雪 and バトル・ロワイアル unsubbed and felt like I understood way more than any anime I watch (日常 is very silly). /wall
