Camp Schwab, Courtney, or Hansen are not the Okinawa experience tho
How is it not? It's not the base that's the problem
How is it not? It's not the base that's the problem
The base people are on is the problem, MCBJ rules and regulations are pretty wack and especially for the guys up on Schwab and Hansen. Middle of nowhere, no car, libbo restrictions, fireteam sized libbo buddies. Most people I know including myself had a great time in Oki, beautiful beaches, friendly people, rich culture, great food, nice women, bars, clubs, it's a great time if you're not on the wrong base I guess.
Friend lent me his Genki books. Very happy to get to use them. Either base will be nice, I'd go for Torii if I were you. Yomitan is a fantastic and peaceful place to live.

Many of them had Okinawa/Zama assignments before they came here to the states. I was willing to tack on several years of additional service to land in the Pacific Theater because that gives me more opportunities to stay with in that area, that means Hawaii, Korea, Taiwan, even Australia and NZ are more likely to land on my desk for assignments. I've also been perusing the websites that the Kadena base have been displaying for off-base housing, but that's just dream-window-browsing right now, I still have about a few more months to go to have my orders be more clarified.
Brb as a Canadian I only get to be stationned in bases situated in the frozen wasteland

Finally got through the "RTK phase" (but using Kanji Damage because the mnemonics are better). Last 100 were agony. Now is the phase where random Chinese people's addons in WoW are annoying because I can kinda understand tiny bits of it. Saw a visual novel in the steam sales where the trailer was all Mandarin for some reason, gathered there was something about a girl and summer. I was planning to mine the core 6k deck for the remaining kanji and learn those before going through but honestly I cannot be fucked doing another couple hundred kanji. My base is probably big enough that learning the remaining more passively will work fine. Figured I'd share my deck even though there is now an official one. It will get you to this point. I changed some of the mnemonics so I don't feel like putting it on shared decks but if you want it for anki it's here, text version of only notes (i.e. tab seperated field data) is here, and text only version of cards (i.e html card front / back) is here. Difference from the official deck is a Japanese keyword for all 1666 kanji which makes it possible to differentiate between the keywords when they are on like 3 different kanji - I tried to stick with the theme of Kanji Damage so it uses useful, everyday keywords like 痴漢 and 乳首. Mine uses the unicode character for radicals if they exist, and made up radicals are missing unlike the official deck because jpegs are ugly. Mine doesn't have stroke diagrams either but after a couple hundred you pick it up anyway. It's also lacking the jukugo info but it's ok because I changed all the keywords from US English to AU English. Probably about mid way between N5 and N4 (not that it's a great measure) so if it's on the lower end of difficulty that's a bonus but not required.
Would somebody please be so kind as to add me on steam, if there is anybody, to help me with my Japanese skills? It would be really appreciated, as I'm going into a tough year at university.
Also RIP all of Namasensei's videos. You will be missed. [editline]6th March 2016[/editline] Most of the translation is worded like shit, only care about the meaning since I am not artistic.
Also RIP all of Namasensei's videos. You will be missed.
Last time I checked his channel, he said that the disappearance of his videos is temporary. If I recall correctly, he made all the videos private while dealing with some problems himself.
Oh thank god.
This is the actual message: This channel is undergoing maintenance and will return in a few months. I need to convert the country of my account. Currently Google is holding thousands of dollars from me because of this. When this issue is resolved, I will reskin the channel and all content will be unlocked. Had I known how easy would it be to find it, I would have posed it in the first place.
Just booked my flight. Matsuya, I'll be enjoying your cheap and delicious food in four months.

I'll be going to Tokyo with some mates in September so I've been coming up with a list of things to check out while I'm there. Any suggestions for things to do, see and eat? Preferably ones that aren't too tourist trap-y. Cycling around Yoyogi Park sounds pretty rad.
Thinking of Going to Japan at the end of the year, any recommendations for areas to visit around December/January? Is there much snow around that time? I've never actuality seen snow before, living in Australia and all :v:. I saw some guides earlier in this thread for learning Japanese, How hard is it to learn? I've heard it's pretty hard to pick up. Could I learn enough not to be awkward by the end of the year?
I went last December, and there wasn't any snow while I was there. If you're in Tokyo around Christmas time I'd recommend going to Roppongi at night, there were Christmas lights all over the place, looked pretty cool. [thumb]http://i.imgur.com/fM5B7ub.jpg[/thumb]
That looks really rad, but I'm most likely going to be there after Christmas around new years.

You won't see any snow in Tokyo, but if you go up north or into the mountains you'll see fucking loads. Skip the skytree, Asakusa is sick, try to go to Comiket if you're there, Akiba is fun for while but the maid cafes are fucking weird, Shibuya is cool as, highly recommend going drinking there, Ueno park is pretty, Harajuku is overrated. Get out of Tokyo and go to Kyoto if you can.
there was some snow in tokyo this year actually
there was some snow in tokyo this year actually
yeah it was like 5cm and everything shut the fuck down
yeah it was like 5cm and everything shut the fuck down
fun timez my girlfriend was at fuji-q highland with her brother and her dad when it started snowing and they were stranded there for a few days
Come to Kansai. I would say you could completely skip over Tokyo.
Come to Kansai. I would say you could completely skip over Tokyo.
Tokyo and Kansai region really aren't comparable. Tokyo is essential to visit unless you've already been, then I would recommend Kansai (or if you're more interested in history and culture) [editline]5th April 2016[/editline] I'd recommend Okinawa as a personal favorite though. It's a side of Japan that many people including Japanese like to neglect when talking about Japanese history and culture.
I used a word the other day that my Japanese friends were surprised that I knew. They said it was very 日本人らしい and that I sounded very fluent. It really gave me a lot of confidence in my ability because I knew it was a genuine compliment and not just them being nice (I really hate that Japanese people tend to do that. You could stumble through a sentence and fuck up basic grammar and they'll still say ”上手上手!!”. It's inspired me to pick up the pace with my learning again. A year or so ago, I would study kanji every day and read a lot of stuff for practice but it's sort of died down a lot since I started partying/making more friends/getting a girlfriend. However daunting becoming truly "fluent" may be, I've forgotten that I HAVE made considerable progress towards doing so, and that to stop now would be foolish. I'm just glad that I have the means to talk in Japanese with actual Japanese people regularly, otherwise I wouldn't have gotten nearly this good at conversation. The phrase in question was 初耳 (はつみみ). It means it's the first time you've heard of something.
i'm fine with just being good enough that i can speak to people here that only speak japanese and actually have a decent conversation which i can do now to some extent
i've been taking japanese classes this year at my college enjoying it a lot, would honestly like to go all the way if i can, although i'm obviously really basic right now, and we're only starting with kanji now それでも、たのしいです。 [editline]5th April 2016[/editline] also there's a lot of japanese students at my college, so i actually get to practice outside of class, which is nice
i'm fine with just being good enough that i can speak to people here that only speak japanese and actually have a decent conversation which i can do now to some extent
That first time where you have a meaningful conversation about something abstract is such a rush. I love the feeling that I've actually been able to accomplish something and do something I'd never done before.
