i've been taking japanese classes this year at my college
enjoying it a lot, would honestly like to go all the way if i can, although i'm obviously really basic right now, and we're only starting with kanji now
それでも、たのしいです。

also there's a lot of japanese students at my college, so i actually get to practice outside of class, which is nice
I love kanji, so pretty.

What are Japanese classes like, anyway? I'm asking out of curiosity because relatively expensive language schools are pretty much the only choice in Poland.
Even though I do see effects of my self-study, some standardised learning would be the most welcome.

Don't waste your money. The only reason I benefit from standardized Japanese classes is because I'm already at a high level and most of the class is discussion based, not based on drills, learning vocab/grammar etc. Constant practice of spoken Japanese is definitely a huge plus to your studies, but if you sign up for beginner classes you're likely just going to waste your time with the shitters who take the class because they want to watch their favorite animes without subs
I introduced my Japanese friends to the glory of good ol' southern-style sweet tea. One of them liked it, so I'll take it as a victory.

It's slower-paced, but I wouldn't really call it a waste of time. I'm enjoying my class a lot, even if it's like that, and I like my teacher.
If you're learning on your own already, though, it's probably not really a good idea to start from the beginning - take placement tests or something.
If you're confident in your learning skills, it would probably be better to try and find somebody to practice with instead. Something like Lang-8, or better yet, somebody in real life.
I wanted to do Japanese classes at some point in the past but there are none near me. From what I've heard beginner classes are awful, and at this point they wouldn't be of any use to me but I know there would be some grammar point / vocabulary (mostly vocabulary - so boring) I wouldn't know from the beginner classes that would be required for the advanced ones.
Trying to read a VN for an hour each night since I can follow the story reasonably well now, unfortunately it's the awful phase where you understand what is going on but know you are missing the details. Never was a big fan of reading because since high school English classes always picked boring as fuck books and I didn't know there were books that were actually enjoyable so I don't have the advantage of reading a story I already know.
Sometimes I get jealous how long people's sentences are.
I also am reading a VN in Japanese. Since I've already read it in English before, knowing more or less what the plot is about definitely helps with grasping the meaning of words, expressions, as well as entire sentences.

It's unfortunate I never have the time to learn fully, so instead I did the next best thing. I married a Japanese woman instead who does all the translation for me. :v:
Finished my core2k deck. So I've now seen most common kanji at least once.
But I only know about 1/4 of it. Progress is slow.

Marriage is even more expensive than Japanese classes, but I guess you're getting other benefits out of it too :v:
Not really, aside from the ring at least. She was a high school Teacher (Hospice/Elder Care) bringing in almost as much as me into the house. MoE refused to renew her contract because she was pregnant. So now my extra expenses, such as paying for het AU cell phone bill, paying for our ETC cards (if you ever get a car here you'll understand), road tax for two cars etc.
My spoken Japanese is semi passable but work doesn't leave me the free time or enviroment to properly learn. If you're ever in Kyushu drop me a PM or LINE, I'll buy you a drink and show you around. Actually, the Arita-ware festival is coming up the end of this month.
Thanks for the offer, but I likely won't have the chance to go for the next year or so. I'm probably doing JET after I graduate.

That's fine, I've lived in Japan for 7 years and counting so I'm not leaving Japan anytime soon. Infact I may transfer back to Kanto next year. I've heard mixed things about JET though.
Looks like I'll be moving into Japan (Okinawa) this coming Summer.
Life looks like it's about to accelerate.
Hello all, I'm conducting an English survey and I need some more non-native speaker responses! There seems to be a good number of native speakers here too so feel free to take it!

I'm raffling off $10 USD gift cards to participants who enter their FP username in the General section, if that interests you.
Thanks!

Where prefecture you in? I was thinking about taking a trip down there maybe in the winter. Its too hot in the summer.
Nagasaki, [sp]it's the bomb![/sp]
It's not too hot until July August where it's in the high 90s by 10am. It's still quite cold here actually.

Weeabooはたいていの時、正しい発音が分からないはずだから、その「う」を発音してしまう。仮名でもローマ字でも発音は同じだと思う。

hey so uh hopefully i wont get banned for just seeking help/off topic or something like that, but im at my wits end
ive been temporarily banned in a JP game (phantasy star online 2) and the only way to lift it is to directly contact support. however i believe it would be in my best interest to send a message in fluent japanese and i dont know a lick of it. would anyone be kind enough to help me? theres also a captcha in the way in order to login to the site that i cant get past because all the letters or whatever just look the same to me and i also have to figure out how to navigate to their support too soooo, hopefully one of you is nice enough to help me so just PM me or add me on steam or something
id super appreciate it as i love the game and it sucks shit that this happened. dont even know why, the game just spits a banned error at me and the only real 'wrong' that ive done is use a proxy so i can actually connect to the game
Buying a thing on ebay, had a few questions for the dude
Final thing he said after I confirmed my purchase was
ありがとうございます!
また連絡します!
I haven't seen something like the second line before, is it saying "please contact me again" or "thank you also for the discussion"?
I haven't seen something like the second line before, is it saying "please contact me again" or "thank you also for the discussion"?
With my limited amount of knowledge it kind of sounds like "I will contact you again" to me. I'm probably wrong, though.

it means literally "I'll contact you again" but you can take that with the same nuance as "I'll see you again", ie they're not definitively saying they'll actually contact you again
so, just wondering and curious, are you guys all weeaboos or something who tried to learn japanese or do you all actually have, like the op implies, relatives, connections, family, etc. which caused you to have learned japanese?
im middle aged, fat, white, lives in Kansas, loves animay and have never been to japan

Never really understood why learning Japanese makes you a weeaboo when learning literally any other language has no negative connotations whatsoever.
I started learning it because I was bored one day and it sounded nice, I stuck with it because they make good music and reading is fun. I've watched one anime in the last 6 months.
Frankly couldn't give less shits about what people think of me because of it though.

I began as a weeb and started learning because of it. Stuck around because I love languages and it's a very cool and fun one to learn, and pretty impressive to the average person.
I've been anime free for 3 years now and I've never felt better.
does anyone here buy stuff on yaj and is the shipping always always super expensive?

Also I like how the majority of my packages from japan come with candy even if it's like a machine part or something. Not that i'm complaining

having japanese blood is no more of a reason to learn japanese than having a legitimate interest in the language or something from the region
so, just wondering and curious, are you guys all weeaboos or something who tried to learn japanese or do you all actually have, like the op implies, relatives, connections, family, etc. which caused you to have learned japanese?
My aunt taught in Japan. She's the "cool" person amongst extended family so me, my brother and my cousin all ended up in a educational arms race to learn japanese.
Anime is barely even a tertiary reason
so, just wondering and curious, are you guys all weeaboos or something who tried to learn japanese or do you all actually have, like the op implies, relatives, connections, family, etc. which caused you to have learned japanese?
Always wanted to learn a language, and I started getting into weeb stuff a few years back.
Did a bit of research, found out japanese grammar is completely different and weird compared to english and that got me pretty interested. Always wanted to learn a language and the further from english the better imo.
If I didn't start japanese I probably would have ended up learning chinese or korean instead, I have no interest in learning a language similar to english because it'd just be boring so why not go as far from it as you can.
So essentially it boils down to:
Wanted to learn a language
Japanese fit what I wanted to learn
Bonus Points: Can watch anime without subs [sp]one day[/sp]
EDIT: Kinda pisses me off when people dismiss learning jap because of weeb shitlords.
Like yeah watching anime is part of it but it's still learning a fucking language it's a pretty big commitment and it ain't an easy language.
