Not interested in Japanese that much, but Duolingo has started a Japanese course now if you guys didn't know about it. Korean should be coming soon as well.
How is duolingo for languages with different alphabets? I did the full Swedish course, and it was okay, though it didn't really concert very much.

Gonna go shill Rhy5lightning's learning moonrunes with mango series, seems to be pretty well made if you're just starting out.
Does anybody here have experience with TEFL in Japan? I've been thinking about it for a few years and the more I think about it the more I think that I wanna do it. I wanna see the world, not rot away in this dead-end town.

I've been debating the JET myself, but as more of a "working holiday" kinda thing, with the full intent of returning to Canada after my year is up. I think it would be really interesting to spend a year immersed in a culture so vastly different from my own.
I'd like to think about being an expat actually, thanks for the advice. Is there any way to re-enroll into the program for the short term if things don't go 100% smoothly, as they are wont to do? What sort of resources should I study about integration and career planning abroad? Obviously I might get there and decide it sucks and change my mind but it would be nice to have my ducks in a row. This is all several years off, too, so I have time to carefully research and study and plan.
AFAIK you can't re-enroll in the JET for a few years after your first "tour", and I think you can't enroll after age 30. However from what I hear it's way easier to job hunt for jobs in Japan while you're there, but unless you speak Japanese the only ones you'll be able to get are teaching English.
Sounds like if I wanna take this seriously I should learn me some Japanese. Maybe I'll take classes when I go back to school, I need to take my associate's and make it a bachelor's anyway. Lots of resources on the previous page, too. It's gonna be a lot of hard work but I should begin seriously figuring out my future.
Sorry if this is broken post. I am currently very busy, so I will sloly update this post with advice and english facing resources. First goal for living successfully is get jpltN1. Many jobs will not require N1. But employer be oh so happy to test and fail on whether you have N1. I hear so many stupid interview stories now that it is just safest to have N1. Second is become familiar with common law, so you can walk around the hammer before it falls on you. Some JET entrants I know after trying to live end up stupid things in bad corners and end up imprisoned for what they think are not crimes, or are complicit in civil issues and so have problems.
Do note that JLPT is basically the same as a degree. It looks good on paper and that's about it, you can be perfectly fine and not pass the JLPT N1, and you can pass the JLPT N1 and not be able to function normally. JLPT is really the JLPTPT. Life is not a multiple choice quiz, people do not speak like the dialogue in the JLPT, but you'll probably figure that out way before you take it.

So I am in Japan now. I will be here for the next 6 months. It's exciting! I get to finally use this language in a practical sense!

Any of you guys going to comiket this month? Some of my senpai are inviting me, but the crowd seems a bit scary. Especially in all this heat right now.

do not try to go there early in the morning, and you will be fine. I will not go because I do not have much to do there and I live in a completely different part of Japan. [editline]28th July 2017[/editline] Make sure to bring lots of water with you too of course.
I don't know if anyone of you remember me talking about Kendo but I'm getting into the deep end of the weeaboo sword stuff because I got news about someone being interested in starting an Iaido club at my university and I'm heavily interested in partnering up with them since I'm part of the committee of the Kendo team
