I've been trying to buy the ShakeIII soundtrack this entire time but amazon JP only accepts local cards. Damn. Can't find any other place to get it too.

Probably a long shot, but do any of the rinks around Tokyo let you rent hockey skates? edit: found one that did. ... they weren't very good. [t]http://i.imgur.com/YB0480Xr.jpg[/t]
I'll be in Tokyo next week, are there any particularly interesting places to visit or things to do? It doesn't matter if the knowledge of Japanese is required.
Any tips for a student who is about to begin learning Japanese through university? According to the coursework for the subject (1st year, known as Japanese 1A at my uni) will go through " Genki: An Integrated Course in Elementary Japanese" I and II for the first semester. Is there anything that could help supplement these two textbooks?
Genki is pretty garbage but this guide is all you really need for grammar.

I just came back from a trip in Japan to see the fall leaves, and it was quite a astounding experience. I'm planning another trip early next year, but which season would you guys prefer? I'm debating either going in early Feburary for 2 weeks to see the Hokkaido snow festivals (and also down to visit elsewhere during this time), or spend two weeks in April to see the cherry blossoms. I'm asking this because these two choices are mutally exclusive, and I will won't be free in either months after this year. So if you had to choose one, what would you guys pick?
Personally I'd go in February, although I may sound biased because I really love snow and haven't had any in years :v:. Both February and April are solid choices so you could try looking if there's anything going on during that time that may interest you. That reminds me that I didn't really take the season into consideration, since I was planning to go in Summer (mainly due to time constraints) but then I would miss out on all the stuff you mentioned above. [editline]7th November 2017[/editline] Also if you don't mind me asking, did you go alone or not? Did you speak the language to some degree?
The trip I just came back from was a mix. I originally went with a group of friends, but I've decided for two more weeks alone after they left. Although I do not speak Japanese, but language barrier wasn't a dealbreaking issue imo. I can read a good amount of Kanji since I can read Chinese, so finding way wasn't too hard. Verbal communication is not possible for me, so it all boils down to me asking something in very simple English with a ton of gesturing, and I get some response back in Japanese also with some gesturing. Eventually, both me and the other party are able to understand what's going on pretty fast. At some point, you learn the customs of how people do things in Japan, so communication becomes lesser and lesser of an issue as you know what to expect.
what did your weekly budget look like? i'm planning to stay a week in july and i'm making up the budget now
what did your weekly budget look like? i'm planning to stay a week in july and i'm making up the budget now
I'm probably not the best person to answer this question, since my budget was quite deep and it's not fixed. I basically just wanted to have a good time and not care much about anything else. The only real expenses I have each day is hotel and meals. Everything else is more or less negligible and optional. For lunch and dinner, i typically spend $20 each meal. I often take day trips to various regions of Japan, so I would typically order one of the more expensive combo meals featuring a variety of local specialties all in one go. If you want to save money, you can easily cut this cost by half by not going to fancy restaurants and aim for eatery type restaurants instead. If breakfast is not included in my hotel, I will just eat lunch a bit earlier instead. Hotel's going to be the most expensive recurring cost. On weekdays, you can often find 3-star hotels for ~$40 if you're lucky, and they're usually within walking distance from major train stations within the city. On weekends and holidays, the price often gets inflated to about $60-75 a night. You should book in advance if you want cheaper places to stay. Hostels and capsule hotels are often around $20, if you're on a tight budget. One exception is that if you're planning to stay in Tokyo, you basically cannot find any hotels for less than $60 a night. Transportation is also a considerable cost, but I didn't take account of it into my daily budget since I paid for a JR Pass. If you plan to travel around Japan a lot (ie, ride a lot of long distance Shinkansen), then you should consider getting a JR Pass. I bought a 21 day pass, and the amount of rides I've taken with my pass was worth somewhere between 3-4x the amount I paid for the pass. If you're only planning to stay within a city, transportation by train should cost you no more than $10 a day. Hope this helps
lit. i was planning on spending about that much on food per day. mainly i was stuck on how much to budget for transport. i'll be staying in tokyo the entire time so i don't think i need a jr pass
Well, my parents agreed to let me study abroad in Japan for 2 weeks this coming May. Going as part of a Global peace Studies group, looking at how Hiroshima and Nagasaki affected Japanese culture and how nuclear weapons should never be used. Should be pretty neat. I'll at least have enough rudimentary Japanese under my belt to talk to someone in the most basic of manners.

Don't skim through anything. It's gonna be hard to hold a tear in after you've soaked in everything.

We will also have guides who are versed in the history and can add more context. So it'll be a pretty emotional trip, but I think it'll still be a good time regardless of how depressing the subject matter is.

I miss living in Japan quite a bit. I want to go back.
Just spent nearly two months in Japan, living out of a family members house in Ome. Had a blast and I'm honestly having a hard time readjusting to day to day life in the US. Definitely going back after I spend some time learning the language.
