I would recommend finding some Japanese text and just start reading the hiragana (without looking for meaning). The more reading practice you have, the faster you'll recognize them, and thus the faster you'll read overall.
April 3rd i fly Tokyo to stay for 3 months!

I don't understand anything other than the hiragana yet, but I try to sound out the parts I can read. It has helped me recognize the characters a lot.
I think the best way to learn Japanese/etc for some people would probably to play a video game in addition to normal tutoring. Heavily text/story based games would be a god send. Morrowind helped me with English as a kid, that's for sure.
mother series and pokemon would be a good choice of game. there's no kanji so it's easy to read. and for pokemon, there's not much of a plot so you can get away with understanding little
living in america chronicles pt1 met a guy who was like "wow you're from japan! you're the first japanese person i've ever met! the only thing i know about japan is...how the us and japan...you know" im like "uh, the war?" he's like "yeah" his next choice of small talk subject begins with "so hows the economy there" fucking incredible

It's impossible to read real Japanese if you don't know any Kanji.
My state is having the annual Japan Fair on the 21st with students from a Japanese High school coming in and setting up games, dances, martial arts demos, and little ceremonies in a way that's like a cultural exchange. I went there last year with friends and it was really fun. http://patch.com/maryland/rockville/ev--japan-fair

It should be East Asia Chat V1: 안녕하세요! 你好! こんにちは! Or something. Includes the rest of us. It's not like this thread is full of activity anyway.
theres a SEA thread that exclude japan (because japanese is for nerds) but it pretty much died after page 2 [editline]20th March 2015[/editline] #繁體masterrace
If anyone here is in Tokyo or around Tokyo from April to June i'll be staying at the Yadoya guesthouse most of April then going around to other places on the train a lot. We can go grab some food.
Just came back from the Japan Fair in my area. Loved meeting all of the foreign students and teachers while partaking in some of their great performances, games, and ceremonies. I even got to try on a Kimono. Sure one of my friends acted weird and spent nearly ALL of five hours in the game corner, but I had fun. I managed to take pictures of everything, and got some with the students. Going there today put a big smile on my face and I don't know why. Will probably post pics of the fair.
Bought my ticket to return back to Japan to live there for work (・ω<) Hopefully get some translating position but more than likely I'll be an Eikaiwa dog. 僕は日本で働くための切符を買ってきて帰るのは決まったんです(・ω<)　 通訳の仕事を見つけるといいですが、それよりまるで英会話の犬になるの方が可能性です。 まぁ気にしない！前向き進むしかない(*^_^*)

you don't need a suitcase, you can get a carry-on dufflebag and save a decent bit of cash. they have to be a certain size, and a bag will let you put way more in it than a small suitcase
