My boyfriend, who I should say is a theoretical physicist, just seriously asked me if they're going to just leave the heat shield on Mars.
Found an article about the hardware in Curiosity incase anyone is interested.
NASA: Can put a 900kg rover on Mars. Can't put a recorded news feed video on ustream.tv
That's truly beautiful.
She's dirty ;)
People on the NASA fb page are saying stuff like: "y is part of it blacked out??? what is nasa tryin to hide from uss???" Idiots.
People on the NASA fb page are saying stuff like: "y is part of it blacked out??? what is nasa tryin to hide from uss???" Idiots.
:I Considering the results I've seen on FB on polls like "what is 1+1+1+1+1-1+1+1*0", the stupidity over there shouldn't surprise anyone really. It's a bit sad though.
Through the magic of Photoshop content aware fill I've been able to remove NASA's fascist image blocking [t]http://imgkk.com/i/3u7v.jpg[/t]
They are taken as .jpg yes, but they aren't compressed as far as I am aware. During one of the Q&A's that question was asked, and the guy who answered it was fully aware of the fact that jpg compression can essentially destroy an image, but if you know anything about .jpgs you would also know that they can still be very high quality. It's just generally thought of as a image destroyer I think because most people compress the hell out of their images with it, for example by saving it in mspaint (The old one) If you are looking at the thumbnails on the page in the thumbnail of the thumbnail form, the thumbnail of the thumbnail is actually scaled up due to how their webpage is set up, so it looks bad. If you click on the thumbnail to bring you to the full size of the thumbnail you will see the actual image is smaller.
They are not jpegs: http://boingboing.net/2012/08/06/mars-curiosity-rover-boing-bo.html It's a custom file format, the algorithm is similar to that of jpeg however.
A little back story on the "Elvis looking guy" EDL Project lead, Adam Stelzner.
Steltzner, born 1963, is a native of the San Francisco Bay Area[3] and came from a family that was financially well off.[5] He struggled in classes in high school, earning a failing grade in Geometry, and was told by his father he'd never amount to anything but a ditch digger.[2] "I was sort of studying sex, drugs and rock and roll in high school," says Steltzner.[2] After high school he played bass and drums in new wave bands.[5] He even studied jazz at Berklee College of Music in Boston, for less than a year.[5] Around 1984, while walking home from music gigs at night, he noticed how the position of stars change. To learn more he decided to take an astronomy class at City College of San Francisco, but he was required to complete a class in physics first, and it was there he had a revelation: nature could be understood and predicted. As Adams put it, "I had found religion."[5] By 1985 he quit music and devoted himself full time to the challenge of school.
It's never too late to make a career change.

I took a shot at it and also stitched in a couple more photos from the public dump at http://mars.jpl.nasa.gov/msl/multimedia/raw/ [t]http://i175.photobucket.com/albums/w148/mblunk/675207main_pia16027-full_full-extrapolate-compress.jpg[/t] Unfortunately there were no good shots of the front (or rear?) of the rover from a similar perspective, or of the wheel the camera (left navcam) is above (bottom of the photo) so you'll still have to use some imagination. It looks kind of like it might if it gets loose... If what I'm looking at is even the chute. It's a long ass way away but it's pointing directly at the Rover

So, what is Curiosity up to now?
So, what is Curiosity up to now?
I think the coolest thing nasa could possibly ever do is have a live-stream of a rover on another planet. Even if it's 240x240 it'll be the only thing I ever watch on the internet.

I really don't see why nasa doesn't do that, it's sending back video all the time anyway, all they gotta do it put it up on nasa tv.
Doesn't look like this has been posted yet. Sorry if it has.
