the last bit where he talked about the failed mars missions the USSR fucking spammed mars probes and only like 1 made it. so people really just should fucking ignore those for mars mission statistics.
I was reading the news papers today, and there was an article about some scientists from the US who are "highly doubting" that Curiosity really landed on Mars and that the rover is actually in Mojave desert. Jesus H. Christ, how the hell can these be scientists? How dumb do you have to be to even say something like that? *huge facepalm*
And who were those scientists if I may ask?
And who were those scientists if I may ask?
They only said the name of the guy that spoke that, John P. Grotzinger from California Institute of Technology. He said that "some others share his opinion"

Oh, here we go again. Let me guess, they also say that the Apollo missions were all staged?
I think so, yes. The human stupidity does not cease to surprise me. I mean there is some guy who believes that the Earth is flat. Not sure if he's mentally ill or just extremely retarded though. Reading the comments on articles and videos from Curiosity gives you a headache "Nice studio, better than Moon landing one" Goddamn idiots.

Wow.

Fucking hell, you don't need to be a part of <x> institution to call yourself a scientist, nor must you have <y> qualification. A scientist is somebody whom has a keen interest and whom studies it with enthusiasm; one who use their titles and qualifications (and not cold, hard evidence) to further their own dogmatic opinion is either arrogant or wrong.
Curiosity landed on Mars, and I pity those who don't accept that.
the moon?
God damn it, you're too quick (I just read the comment about the studio being better than the moon one)

Research interests. The hell does that mean. I guess he's a "scientist"

I thought you were joking.
Anybody who thinks the Apollo landings were filmed on the Earth are morons. Everybody knows they built a studio on Mars and faked it there.

I always end up landing what I'm reading.
Can we just keep this thread open for the next two years? This is like my primary source of Curiosity news and updates.
Maybe someone could rename it the "Curiosity Rover thread".
[editline]10th August 2012[/editline]
Otherwise I'm sure the Space Chat thread will have plenty of updates.
They only said the name of the guy that spoke that, John P. Grotzinger from California Institute of Technology. He said that "some others share his opinion"
are you sure he really said that? from what I read, he said it looked like the Mojave.
[editline]10th August 2012[/editline]
and he's actually a scientist on the Curiosity mission. I doubt he doesn't believe it happened.

which paper?
the sun
"The first impression that you get is how Earthlike this seems, looking at that landscape," said Caltech's John Grotzinger, chief scientist for the $2.5 billion mission. "You would really be forgiven for thinking that NASA was trying to pull a fast one on you, and we actually put a rover out in the Mojave Desert and took a picture."
Well I bet you read it wrong.
I'm curious as to what newspaper twisted his words into saying that he didn't actually think it was on Mars.
I'm pretty sure I've seen that guy in some of the live press conferences too.

I literally burst out laughing. (Scrolling down the page, I thought that was a serious answer to the question for a split-second)
I've got to stop browsing facepunch at work. I had to pretend that a friend had sent me a funny email.
Dammit I could have just used the official excuse:

I did not read it wrong. The papers seem to have twisted his words.

What papers was it? Seems really dickish, I assume it's one of those typical tabloid stuff.
Just like here in Sweden, the newspaper Aftonbladet tried to stir shit up by claiming there was something in one of Curiosity photos that wasn't there before. These were the two photos:
STUFF AT HORIZON.

Now I'm interested in knowing how the American newspapers wrote about it.
I wish Carl Sagan were here. :(

It was domestic newspaper here called Courier. They do sometimes twist stuff and over blow/hype it, so I should've known better :(
Edit: And as for that picture, that's clearly a dust particle on the dust cover. I mean I'd like to see an alien but it's just dust.

NASA thinks it's possible that it might be the dust cloud created by the explosion from the jetpack impacting the ground.
